Getting Around Prague s public transportation is very convenient in most of the areas visitors are likely to frequent. It is reliable and extensive. Most places in the center can be reached faster by subway than by car. You can use buses, trams (tramvaj), subway (metro) and the funicular to the Petrin hill. When travelling by the public transport, be careful about pickpockets. They are very effective and your lost belongings will probably never be retrieved. Metro (Subway) The Prague metro carries around 400 million passengers a year. It is fast, efficient, clean and easy to use. Its three lines consist of about 65 km of tracks running mostly underground, and some 61 stations. New stations continue to be added. The Prague metro is only about 30 years old and is mostly Russian-built. In 2008, all cars were replaced by new ones built by Siemens. The lines currently are: Line A (Green) running east to west from Depo Hostivař to Nemocnice Motol, Line B (Yellow) - running east to west from Černý most to Zličín, and Line C (Red) - running north to south from Letňany to Háje. An extension by two new lines (D and E) is planned for the future. There are three transfer stations in the city center where two lines intersect: Můstek (lower end of Wenceslas Square) - lines A and B, Muzeum (upper end of Wenceslas Square) - lines A and C, and Florenc (main bus station) - lines B and C.These are transfer points from one line to another. Each transfer route is clearly marked and takes 3-5 minutes walking. Trains run from 5 a.m. till midnight in 2-3 min. intervals during peak hours and in 4-10 min. intervals in the off hours. Trams Trams (tramvaje) cover a large area of the city (with 500 km of tracks) and are used by some 300 million people a year. Daytime trams run from 4:30 a.m. till midnight in 8-10 minute intervals (8-15 minutes on weekends). Night trams (numbers 51-58) run from 00:30 a.m. till 4:30 a.m. in 40 minute intervals. Walking Prague is renowned as a very "walkable" city. For those who enjoy seeing the old and new city by foot, one can easily walk from Wenceslas Square to the Old Town Square, or from the Old Town to Charles Bridge and the Castle District. However, almost all of the streets are cobbled, rendering it very difficult for disabled or elderly travelers to get around effectively. Also, pedestrians should enter crosswalks carefully in Prague, as drivers are not as likely to yield as they are in other European cities. Remember that in the Czech Republic, it is illegal to cross at a pedestrian crossing on a red man, and if caught this incurs a fine of 1000kč. Buses Buses (autobusy) mostly cover the outskirts of Prague. Daytime buses run from 4:30 a.m. till midnight in 6-8 min. intervals in peak hours, 10-20 min. intervals in the off hours, and 15-30 min. intervals on weekends. Night buses (numbers 501-513) run from around midnight till 4:30 a.m. at 30-60 min. intervals. Bus 119 and 100 Bus 119 connects the Ruzyně airport with the Dejvická metro station and bus 100 connects the airport with the Zličín station. They are both a convenient and cheap way to get to and from the Prague airport. 7

Tickets Tickets can be purchased at newspaper shops, majority of tobacco stands and at yellow vending machines installed in the subway lobby areas. Do not forget to validate your ticket as frequent controls are made by transport officials in civilian clothes. The fine for being caught without a validated ticket is 700 CZK if you pay on the spot, 950 CZK if you pay afterwards at the premises of the transport company. Single ticket: CZK 32 The single ticket is for one person and you are allowed to freely use all the means of transport for 90 minutes from the validation of the ticket. Single ticket: CZK 24 The single ticket is for one person and you are allowed to freely use all the means of transport for 30 minutes from the validation of the ticket. These tickets are not valid for night services. 24-hours ticket: CZK 110 These tickets have the same rules of use as the single ticket. Taxi It is commonly advised to the foreigners to avoid taking a taxi if public transport can be used. Taxi drivers in Prague are internationally known for ripping off the unsuspecting foreigners. When taking one you should follow a few simple rules. Firstly, don t take the taxis that are waiting at tourist places, in front of railway stations etc. Secondly, check the company name, rates and license number on the front doors. Thirdly, ask always the price beforehand (i.e. before you get into the car or from the dispatcher on the phone). Fourthly, check the rate on the taximeter and if it does not correspond with the prices on the doors, ask the driver to stop and get off. Lastly, you do not have to pay if the driver refuses to give you a printed receipt. Maximum prices should be: charge on entry CZK 40, CZK 28 / km, CZK 6 / minute of waiting It is always better to call for a taxi of one of the reliable companies. Safety Information Safety and Security Civil disorder is rare in the Czech Republic, although strikes and demonstrations may occur. U.S. citizens should be vigilant in protecting their security, bearing in mind that even demonstrations meant to be peaceful may turn violent. The Czech Republic remains free of terrorist incidents; however, like other countries in the Schengen area, the Czech Republic s open borders with its neighbors allow for the possibility of terrorist groups entering/exiting the country without the knowledge of Czech police. Crime The Czech Republic generally has a low rate of crime. However, street crime particularly pick-pocketing and occasional mugging is a problem, especially in major tourist areas in Prague and on public transportation. Incidents of violent crime, while still relatively infrequent, are becoming more common in Prague. Travelers should be very careful while riding the trains, trams, or metro, where most crime occurs. Keep a copy of your passport in a safe place separate from the passport itself; this copy can help you to apply for a new passport if yours is lost or stolen. Visitors should be alert to the potential for substantial overcharging by taxis, particularly in areas frequented by tourists. Radio-dispatched taxis are often much more reliable. It is also advisable to set the price in advance. Under Czech law, you must verify your identity by presenting a travel document, a residence permit card, or an identity card issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs if asked by Czech police. If you are a tourist, this means that you are expected to carry your passport with you. We urge you to ensure the security of your passports while moving about to prevent incidents of pick-pocketing or theft. Information for Victims of Crime The loss or theft abroad of a passport should be reported immediately to the local police and the nearest Embassy or Consulate. In Prague, this report should be made at the police station in the district where the theft occurred. If you are the victim of a crime while overseas, in addition to reporting to local police, please contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate for assistance. The Embassy/Consulate staff can, for example, assist you to find appropriate medical care, contact family members or friends and explain how funds could be transferred. Although the investigation and prosecution of the crime is solely the responsibility of local authorities, consular officers can help you to understand the local criminal justice process and to find an attorney if needed. The local emergency line in the Czech Republic is 112. English-speaking assistance is not always available from the local police, but the police headquarters at 9 Jungmannovo Námestí in New Town usually has an English-speaker available. Criminal Penalties While you are traveling in another country, you are subject to its laws. Foreign laws and legal systems can be vastly different than your own. Criminal penalties vary from country to country. There are also some things that might be legal in the country you visit, but still illegal in your country. Special Circumstances Czech customs authorities enforce strict regulations concerning temporary importation into or export from the Czech Republic of items such as firearms, antiquities, medications, business equipment, etc. It is advisable to contact the Embassy of the Czech Republic in your country for specific information regarding customs requirements. 10

Souvenirs Czech beer Hearty Czech food requires hearty drink, and Czech beer is touted as the world s best. Two of the most famous labels are Pilsner Urquell, a light and hoppy brew, and Budwieser Budvar. Visitors don't need to be too fussy about which brand they drink, since there are so many good ones to choose from: Radegast, Velkopopovicky kozel, Staropramen and Gambrinus, to name a few more. In general, tmave pivo (dark beer) is usually sweet while svetle pivo (a light, golden-color beer) is aromatic and bitter. Becherovka Herbal Liquer Jan Becher produces this drink according to a traditional secret recipe, without adding any chemical preservatives, artificial colors or emulsifiers for over 200 years. Becherovka is known as the 13th spring at the spas at Karlovy Vary. If you or someone you know is fond of bittersweet, herbalbased alcoholic beverages and digestives, then a bottle of genuine Carlsbad Becherovka will make a great purchase. Formerly it was taken as stomach drops to improve digestion. However, considering the delicious taste of this medicine patients did not follow the prescribed dosage and gradually created the tradition of Becherovka as an aperitif served in small shots. Today, Bechorovka is served either ice cold, or as part of mixed drinks. The most famous one is with tonic water, called Beton. Spa Wafers The history of the traditional Czech spa wafers (lázeňské oplatky) goes back to 1856 when Karel Reitenberger started to produce them on a large scale. Their taste and shape have not changed ever since. Thanks to unique production which includes manually covering with mixture of hazelnuts, vanilla, cinnamon and sugar, Kolonada wafers are among the traditional Czech specialties. Nowadays there are all kinds of flavors. You can find spa wafers in a number of Czech spa towns, but those from Karlovy Vary are the most famous. Czech Glass and Crystal Souvenirs The Czech Republic is famous for its crystal and glass. Peruse some of the finer, established galleries, or pick up a couple of less expensive pieces at souvenir shops. These Czech souvenirs are wonderful gifts to bring back to loved ones - but again - they require care in transport. 12

Czech Porcelain - Blue Onion Pattern The pattern used on this porcelain has been labeled from the beginning as an onion pattern. It originates from the combination of stylized plant motifs on an East Asian style background, however it is adapted to the European style and concept. The common name onion pattern has its origins in the faulty interpretation of one motif of the pattern, the depiction of a pomegranate, which by its shape distantly reminds one of an onion. In spite of this the concept of cibulák is a symbol of delicate beauty, a symbol of the combination of usefulness and being pleasing to the eye, a symbol of uniqueness and worldliness. Bohemian Garnet Bohemian garnet, which can only be found in Bohemia, has always maintained a unique position among other garnet stones due to its unique, fiery red color and the light refraction. Moreover, it is said to enjoy curative effects. As it has come down since the time of Emperor Rudolph II, the admirer of Bohemian garnets who had many unique pieces in his collection, Bohemian garnet has been said to help overcome sorrow and bring vital power, spirit and the feeling of joy. The present-day manufacturer Granat Turnov has been continuing the tradition of manufacturing real Bohemian jewels and spreading their publicity abroad. At present, the sample range of garnet jewelry includes over 3,500 designs produced according to customer requirements in sterling silver, gold-plated silver, 14 kt and 18 kt gold. Jewelry: Beads from Jablonec Beads have been made in the Jablonec area since the 16th century and sold under the Jablonex brand to more than 80 countries in five continents for the past 50 years. Art Nouveau Paintings by Alfons Mucha There is no doubt that of all modern Czech visual artists Alfons Mucha (1860-1939) enjoyed and continues to enjoy the most international recognition, influence, and popularity. In December 1894 Mucha volunteered to produce a poster advertising a play with Sarah Bernhardt, the most famous actress in Paris. On January 1, 1895, the advertisement for Gismonda appeared on the streets of Paris which became an overnight sensation. You can find popular Art Nouveau Alfons Mucha reproductions. Czech Marionettes Puppetry is an ancient form of performance; there is evidence that puppets were used in Egypt as early as 2000 BC. Marionettes have a long tradition in Bohemia, going back to the times when traveling troupes used to entertain children with morality plays on town squares. First Czech performing puppeteers appeared in the Czech lands in the 70s of 18th century. Nowadays you can buy marionettes of different sizes and quality mainly in the tourist areas of Prague. 13

Books Famous Czech Authors You can never go wrong by buying some book about Prague or Czech Republic, whether about history, cuisine, sights. As for the Czech prose you can choose from Czech writers know far behind Czech borders like Franz Kafka, Milan Kundera, Karel Capek, or Jaroslav Hasek and his popular Svejk. Classical Music CDs The Czech Republic gave the world several great classical music composers such as Bedrich Smetana, Antonin Dvorak, Leos Janacek, or Bohuslav Martinu, to name the most famous ones. In Prague, you may therefore want to browse the music selection in the CD shops. Important - Don't buy Matryoshka dolls! A matryoshka doll is a Russian nesting doll which is a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside the other. You will find many stores where they will try to sell you one of these saying that it's a typical Czech souvenir. 14
