CLEANSE & DISINFECT (C&D) All vendors bringing stock must comply with the Cleansing and Disinfection Order 2003 i.e. they must CLEANSE AND DISINFECT their vehicle either by using the facilities provided at the Venue or by thoroughly cleansing the vehicles upon reaching home within 24 hours. 5. The Dorset Down Breed is on the approved list of Native Breeds issued by Natural England for Stewardship Schemes and is listed on the RBST Watch list; Category 5 Minority. EXPORT Sheep forward at this auction have NOT been genotype tested for ARR/ARR or Brucella Ovis (rams) therefore will not be eligible for export. Dorset Down rams have been successfully exported to France direct from breeders farms in 2014 and 2016. DORSET DOWN The Dorset Down is a medium sized active sheep free from all coarseness and embodying the good breed points common to all sheep breeds. A head with a wide forehead, muzzle moderately fine in females, ears of medium length, fine and free from wool, brown in colour, carried almost horizontally above the level of the eyes. The neck short and well set into the shoulders with well sprung ribs, level back, wide flat loin, the tail head well set up and well filled hind quarters. In rams a bold masculine head is an essential feature. Volume 1 Flock Book of this Breed was not issued until 1906 but sheep of this type were common in the Dorset area for upwards of one hundred years previously. The first Flock Book listed 51 Flocks with a total of 21,376 ewes. The largest flock being the property of William Hooper of Newburgh, consisted of 1,200 ewes. It is of interest to note that all of the flocks were situated in the County of Dorset hence the name Dorset Down. Many changes have taken place within the Breed in the last 100 years. Although there is now almost double the number of flocks, compared to 1906, they are greatly reduced in size and are no longer hurdled flocks. This was a system where sheep were folded on various catch crops, behind wattle hurdles, which were moved daily, so that the sheep were always on fresh grazing. It was a system used as much for the benefit of the arable crop that followed as for the sheep but this practice disappeared with the introduction of artificial fertilizers and modern farming methods not to mention the amount of labour required for such a system. Flocks nowadays are almost all run exclusively on grass a change that the Breed has adopted extremely well. The other great change has been the move from disposing of the bulk of the male lambs as prime killing lambs to selling them as terminal sires to put on cross bred ewes for the production of prime lambs a job they do extremely well. Noted for the speed at which the lambs mature producing an 18-20 kilo carcase at 12-16 weeks. There are many attributes the Breed possesses that commend it to the smaller flock master hardiness, docility, easy lambing and good mothers with lambs that are strong and active at birth. A breed that thrives on grass either new leys or permanent pasture. The ewes will lamb from early November onwards without any artificial aids and are noted for their ability to keep breeding successfully for a considerable number of years. In the last few years the Breed has enjoyed a great renewal of interest resulting in an increase in Membership and sheep numbers. This has been reflected in the Sales held by the Association over the years, with the Breed Sale being an annual event held at the traditional time in July.
