ISSUE 16/ May 2016 Gold Coast Stock Sport Club - Home of the Austrian Australian Club phone 5534 7099 or 0414 774 436 mailto: gcstocksportclub@gmail.com www.austrianclubgoldcoast.com www.stocksportclubgoldcoast.com ************************************************************************************************** Hi dear members and guests! How are you? Our last Luncheon was certainly a bit quieter in numbers (a very intimate luncheon) but the fun we all had was still up there with the other fuller days. As you will see by the following photos further down, new guests got into the mix too and enjoyed themselves and so did everyone else. Winter is coming! Why don t you come to our next Luncheon for warm comfort food and a mug of Glühwein, the perfect treat for cold winter days. Get ready for our next luncheon in June: Winter Glühwein Festival on Sunday 5 th! Our Schneider Musikanten will entertain us with their favorite tunes.

Members $ 13 Guests $ 15 That s what we will serve you for lunch on the 05 June 2016: 1. Our fantastic Schnitzel and salads 2. Goulash with Servietten-Knoedel Austrian Bread Dumplings 3. There is also the choice of a vegetarian meal, or gluten free You will have to order this with your booking (before Saturday), because we will prepare this especially for you. Afterwards coffee or tea and our homemade delicious cakes and tortes (coffee/tea $2.50 cake or torte $3.50) and of course --------- GLUEHWEIN OR HOT MULLED WINE There is one drink Austrians treasure during the winter season and that is: Glühwein. The scent of this spiced mulled wine lingers throughout Austria. A bit of history first: Wine was first recorded as spiced and heated in Rome during the 2nd century. The Romans travelled all across Europe, conquering much of it and trading with the rest. The legions brought wine and viticulture (the cultivation of grapevines) with them up to the Rhine and Danube rivers and to the Scottish border bringing their recipes with them.

The Forme of Cury a medieval English cookery book from 1390 mentioned mulled wine, says: "Pur fait Ypocras " grinding together cinnamon, ginger, galangal, cloves, long pepper, nutmeg, marjoram, cardamom, and grains of paradise ("spykenard de Spayn", rosemary may be substituted). This is mixed with red wine and sugar (form and quantity unstated). Glühwein (roughly translated as "glow-wine", from the hot irons once used for mulling) is popular in Germanspeaking countries and in the region of Alsace in France. It is a traditional beverage that is offered during the Christmas holidays. The Glühwein is usually prepared from red wine, heated and spiced with cinnamon sticks, cloves, star aniseed, citrus, sugar and at times vanilla pods. It is sometimes drunk mit Schuss (with a shot), which means that rum or some other liquor has been added. And because we have been talking about food and drinks only so far I would like to show you some pictures of some of our dedicated kitchen volunteers slaving away for our guests in the kitchen. It looks like they are having fun.! If you want to help out to give some of our permanent volunteers a well-earned break, just call Leonie on 5533 8307 and she will discuss with you what you can do to assist them. Your help would be much appreciated!

One of our attractions at our Luncheons is the draw of the Raffle. I will tell you more in the next newsletter about our girls who organize the raffle prizes, wrapping them in beautiful paper and bows, sell the tickets, announce the winners. Thank you Dagmar, Erika, Aurelia and Roberta it s a big job. Here some impressions of some lucky winners:..!!!!

After all this food, cakes and tortes and maybe some GLÜHWEIN you might feel like moving your body a bit and do some exercises. If you have been to our club before maybe you wondered about what all this crazy people are doing on the dancefloor! Raising their hands in the air, jumping, moving their arms as if they are swimming I will tell you what this is all about now: It s called the FLIEGERLIED SO EIN SCHÖNER TAG The Fliegerlied or So ein Schöner Tag (Today is Such a Beautiful Day) is an Oktoberfest classic around the world and is largely responsible for getting the Lederhosen and Dirndl-clad crowds up onto the dance floor.

English Fliegerlied Lyrics Today is Such a Beautiful Day (Flier song) I like to lay in the grass and look up at the sky. Don t all the clouds look funny? And a plane flies past, and I wave up at it. And if you re there too, then I feel fantastic. And I fly, fly, fly, like a plane am so strong, strong, strong like a tiger and so tall, tall, tall like a giraffe so tall all-oh-oh and I swim, swim over to you and I jump, jump, jump and keep on jumping and I swim, swim, swim over to you and I take, take, take you by the hand because I like you and I say Today is such a beautiful day la, la, la, la, la (Repeat) and I take, take, take you by the hand and I say Today is such a beautiful day la, la, la, la, la it s soooo much fun!!!! Just join in and sing along and dance!

Lots of happy people having fun!
