August 07, 2012 CHILE Chile Wineries M - Q Tasted at the Wines of Chile Tasting see month and year in italics Tasted on other occasions see date and place in italics Growers / Wineries are in alphabetical order with area underneath Viña Maipo Maipo Valley Red Wines Ladera Verde Merlot 2011 84 2012-16 Tasted in Lilley July 2012 The start is quite rich with a mix of red and black plums but the fleshiness gives way to bitter cherry and hard tannins. There is a lack of sweetness at the back tough slightly green and bitter. Ladera Verde Merlot 2013 88 2014-18 Tasted in Lilley October 2014 The nose has sweet fruit ripe black plum the richness giving suppleness on the mid palate. Towards the back red cherry and bramble give a lighter fresher feel but the finish is fat and full lots of ripe damsons. Viña Mar Casablanca Valley Sparkling Wines Extra Brut NV 87 Chardonnay 60% Pinot Noir 40% Casablanca Valley Tasted at Tarapaca winery February 2013 The nose is light quite fragrant and very fresh and the start of the palate is light and crisp. CHILE August 07, 2012 Reserva Syrah 2013 89 2016-20 Tasted at the Mercado Chileno tasting Truman s Old Brewery September 2016 Sweet fruit on the nose the palate has richness and ripeness a mix of red fruits. Fresher towards the back but the sweetness is there on the finish depth of flavour. De Martino Isla de Maipo White Wines Single Vineyard Quebrada Seca Chardonnay 2011 93 2013-17 Limari Valley There is a lemon flower fragrance about the nose with a citrus freshness on the palate. Slightly sweeter tropical fruits fill out the mid palate the richness balanced by the freshness that comes through towards the back. The finish minerals on the finish give a racy lightness and length. Chardonnay Reserve 347 Vineyards Chardonnay 2014 90 2017-20 Limari Valley Tasted in Santiago February 2017 Depth of fruit on the nose the start of the palate is rich with ripe melon and a hint of oak. There is enough fresh fruit crisp apple to balance and refresh with the rich fruit giving depth on the finish. Rosé Wines Gallardia Rosé Cinsault 2012 91 2013-16 Itata Valley The nose is quite light but with lovely fragrances all very red fruit in character. Wild strawberry and loganberry intermingle on the palate the freshness of the fruit giving lightness in the middle and bringing out the red fruited fragrances on the finish. Red Wines Viejas Tinajas Cinsault 2012 93 2013-17 Itata Valley Although red fruits seem to dominate the nose there are fresh black fruits at the back just a hint of bilberry. August 07, 2012 CHILE Viejas Tinajas Cinsault 2016 90 2017-22 Itata Valley Tasted crossing the Andes February 2017 The nose is bright floral violets the palate has a complex mix of autumn hedgerow fruits bramble, rosehips and sloes. Bright and fresh in the middle there is sweetness at the back the finish lighter and spicy. Single Vineyard Alto de Piedras Carménère 2010 92 2013-17 Maipo Valley The nose is very aromatic with herbal blackberry with some eucalyptus. The tannins are fine beautifully integrated and towards the back there are richer flavours some firmer black cherry. The finish has freshness with an attractive mix of fruits. Single Vineyard La Aguada Carignan 2008 93 2013-17 Maule Valley There is a wild rustic feel about both nose and palate. Hedgerow fruits red cherries bramble and rosehips give lots of complexity. The mid sweetness gives way to back palate freshness that brings out a lovely herbal spiciness. Single Vineyard Limávida 2010 93 2013-18 Malbec 90% Tannat Gros Verdot Cabernet Sauvignon Maule Valley The black fruits on the nose are rich and ripe and the palate starts with a fleshy sweetness. Black plum, black cherry are enriched by black truffles with the suppleness helped by rounded tannins. Towards the back the fruits are fresher still black fruited and this gives a lighter bright feel to the finish. Limávida Old Vines Field Blend Single Vineyard 2013 92 2017-22 Malbec 85% Cabernet Sauvignon & Carmenère 15% Maule Valley Tasted crossing the Andes February 2017 Brambles, rosehips, wild strawberries there is a lot happening on nose and palate. The mid palate is fresh herbal the back palate sweeter rich ripe cassis and black truffle and it finishes with depth of flavour. CHILE August 07, 2012 The red fruits on the nose are very fresh quite light but with a lovely mix of flavours. Richer strawberry gives more weight on the mid palate and although there are some sweet black fruits towards the back the overall feel is one of freshness. Familia 2007 94 2013-18 Cabernet Sauvignon 91% Malbec 4.5% Carménère 4.5% Maipo Valley Cassis dominates rich and sweet with black cherry helping the richness and depth of fruit on the palate. The fruit is ripe the tannins rounded some dark chocolate and black truffle and the back palate has layers of fruit lots of interest with herbal freshness on the finish. Matetic Vineyards San Antonio White Wines Sauvignon Blanc EQ Coastal 2008 90 September 2008 Light on nose, the gooseberry freshness is underpinned by fragrant lime. Lovely floral fragrances intermingle with flint and mineral. EQ Sauvignon Blanc 2015 92 2016-19 Casablanca Valley Tasted at the winery February 2016 White flowers fresh on the nose the palate has a mineral citrus brightness. There is a hint of tropical fruit but at the back lime and lemon refresh the finish flinty and mineral. Chardonnay EQ 2007 91 September 2008 Sweet greengage gives a weight of flavour to the nose and richness to the palate. The mid palate is fresh and then towards the back the greengage fleshiness comes through ensuring sweet fruit fullness at the back. EQ Chardonnay 2013 92 2016-20 San Antonio Valley Tasted at the winery February 2016 Light and fresh on the nose the palate has depth and sweetness ripe melon and greengage. August 07, 2012 CHILE Pinot Noir EQ 2007 88 September 2008 Light fragrant black cherry and mulberry have charm but lack a bit of substance. Sweeter richer flavours come through on the mid palate but the finish is very light. Pinot Noir EQ 2011 95 2013-18 Tasted at the IWC Taste of Gold June 2013 The nose has a fresh fruited charm the black fruits backed by mulberry and raspberry freshness. Sweet fruit gives a little more depth in the middle but the finish is lighter with lots of fragrances. EQ Pinot Noir 2013 92 2016-21 Casablanca Valley Tasted at the winery February 2016 Spicy pepper the nose is fresh and perfumed the palate bright with a mix of bramble and red fruits. Sweet in the middle quite rich but it is lighter at the back with fresh fruits on the finish. Syrah EQ 2007 91 September 2008 The red fruits feel ripe giving flesh on the nose and sweetness on the palate. Towards the back the spice of black pepper adds excitement and there is lots of flavour from the fruit mix on the finish. EQ Syrah 2012 93 2016-22 Tasted at the winery February 2016 The nose is bright with black pepper spiciness some red fruits the palate starts fresh. Sweet in the middle depth of fruit the ripe strawberry and cherry underpinned by spicy freshness the finish is bright and long. Syrah Corralillo 2007 90 September 2008 Sweet red fruited nose backed by black pepper and spice. The ripeness of the fruit fleshes out the palate but under it is a freshness that lifts and lengthens the flavours towards the back. Matetic Syrah 2009 92 2016-21 Tasted in the Carlton Club September 2016 The nose has herbal red fruits the start of the palate bright. It fills out in the middle the fruit rich and ripe mid suppleness with ripe tannins. Fresh at the back more redcurrant in character the finish has a hint of white pepper spice. CHILE August 07, 2012 Concentrated the nose has depth of flavour the start of the palate brooding richness. There are layers of flavour the richness balanced by bramble freshness the back palate quite light and peppery but it finishes with depth of flavour. Winemaker s Blend Corralillo 2006 92 Merlot 67% Cabernet Franc 17% Malbec 10% Pinot Noir 6% September 2008 It has lovely sweet fruit on the nose and the ripeness is much in evidence on the palate. Black plum intermingles with bilberry underpinned by green peppery spice enriched by hints of black truffle. This mix of flavours gives an excitingly complexity. Maycas del Limari Limari Valley White Wines Quebrada Seca Chardonnay 2012 90 2016-18 Tasted in Santiago February 2016 Depth of fruit on the nose the palate has apricot and tropical fruit richness a hint of oak. There is an underlying freshness bright and citrusy at the back but it fills out on the finish with ripe tropical fruit. Viña Mayu Elqui Valley Red Wines Illusion Syrah Carmenère 2014 88 2015-20 Tasted at Lincoln s Inn October 2015 Spicy peppery the nose has herbal freshness with a mix of red and black fruits. Sweet fruit on the mid palate gives more depth of flavour but at the back the red fruits dominate the finish leafy with black pepper spice. Syrah Reserva 2012 88 2016-20 Tasted at the Mercado Chileno tasting Truman s Old Brewery September 2016 Light and fresh fruits the nose is bright the palate starts with raspberry freshness. August 07, 2012 CHILE Red Wines Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 86 2013-16 Central Valley Tasted is Casa Matriz Restaurant Talca February 2013 The black fruits on the nose are rich and the palate has a fleshy sweetness. Towards the back the tannins are very much in evidence and the finish is firm tight slightly rustic. Montes Apalta Valley & Marchigüe The Montes Company started in 1987 with a partnership between Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray (Douglas had run the San Pedro operation when it was owned by the Spanish Rumasa group). They were soon joined by two other partners, Afredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand developing a range of wines from their base in the Curicó Valley. Aurelio felt that the was Chile s ideal area for red wines and his dream of making wines from that area was achieved when land was bought in the Apalta side valley. This is the base for their world beating reds with a winery being completed there in 2004. Their expansion has not slowed, a vineyard site has been acquired in the neighbouring Marchigüe region and Montes have now moved into Argentina with the Kaiken label. Sparkling Wines Montes Sparkling Angel Brut 92 Chardonnay 30% Pinot Noir 70% Zapallar Tasted at the winery February 2016 Tasted at the winery February 2017 Citrus freshness white flowers on the nose the start of the palate bright. Depth in the middle bready toasty with greengage richness then at then back citrus and apple refresh the finish is bright and fresh. White Wines Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2005 89 September 2005 It is crisp and minerally with a mix of tropical fruit and gooseberry. The taste has a racy freshness nicely fragrant and a flowery minerality showing on the long finish. Limited Selection Sauvignon Blanc 2010 91 2010-12 Leyda September 2010 There is an attractive citrus freshness about the nose with the lime, lemon and kiwi mix very much in evidence on the palate. Sweeter fleshier grapefruit gives richness towards the back crisp lime ensures a lovely racy finish. Limited Selection Sauvignon Blanc 2012 89 2013-17 Leyda Valley It has the crispness of gooseberry and green limes fresh on the nose and the palate. Slightly sweeter flavours come through in the middle but the finish is racy citrusy and mineral. Limited Selection Sauvignon Blanc 2013 90 2015-18 Leyda Valley Tasted at Lincoln s Inn February 2015 Gooseberries herbal the nose has depth of character the palate racy and fresh. The mid palate has a richer feel grapefruit with the crunchy gooseberry the citrus and mineral giving a racy freshness to the finish. Limited Selection Sauvignon Blanc 2015 91 2016-19 Leyda Valley Tasted at the winery February 2016 Green limes a hint of gooseberry the nose is fresh and bright the palate starts crisp and crunchy Hints of tropical fruits in the middle a touch of sweetness but at the back citrus dominates the finish is crisp with gooseberry and mineral. Villa Montes Sauvignon Blanc 1990 89 Tasted at Brewers Hall June 1991 Crisp and clean on the nose the palate is fresh with apple and gooseberry crispness and nice length. There is a sweeter feel to the mid palate but the fresh fruit the citrus the hint of gooseberry are there at the back the finish bright and long. Villa Montes Sauvignon Blanc 2015 90 2016-21 Curicó Valley Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians March 2016 The nose is bright fresh with a mix of citrus fruits the start of the palate crunchy gooseberry freshness. There is a richer sweeter feel in the middle good balance the finish fresh citrus and mineral with flavours that last. Sauvignon Blanc 2009 87 Casablanca Valley September 2009 The nose is very light quite fragrant with lime and a hint of gooseberry. There is a touch of spice on the palate fresh lemon and lime towards the back. Sauvignon Blanc 2009 90 Leyda Valley September 2009 The nose has the freshness of lime and gooseberry. There is a lot of lovely crunchy fruit on the palate, first limes then lemons all backed by fresh gooseberry. Sauvignon Blanc 2012 88 2016-17 Casablanca Valley Tasted at Lincoln s Inn January 2016 Citrus on the nose the start of the palate is bright richer in the middle some tropical fruits and although lime and gooseberry fresh at the back the finish is beginning to show maturity. Sauvignon Blanc 2014 92 2014-18 Casablanca Valley Tasted at the Carlton Club December 2014 The mix of apple, lime and gooseberry refresh the nose the start of the palate crisp. Sweeter in the middle tropical fruits some tangerine all balanced by citrus at the back the finish long and racy. Outer Limits Sauvignon Blanc 2015 93 2016-20 Aconcagua Valley Tasted at the winery February 2016 The nose has white peach the start of the palate breadth of fruit. There is an underlying citrus freshness bright at the back with a hint of tropical fruit giving depth on the finish. Outer Limits Sauvignon Blanc 2016 93 2017-21 Zapallar Tasted at the winery February 2017 Racy and fresh the nose has a mineral citrus mix bright on the start of the palate. There is a hint of sweetness in the middle with fresh fruits, mineral and flint refreshing back palate and finish. Fume Blanc 1990 91 Tasted at Brewers Hall June 1991 The nose has richness and depth the palate tropical fruit sweetness in the middle. Fresh at the back the citrus mix backed by flint and mineral the finish expressive and long. Chardonnay 1990 92 Tasted at Brewers Hall June 1991 Greengage rich on the nose the palate has the fleshiness of ripe melon. A hint of oak at the back adds spice and the fruit at the back palate is rich and ripe. Classic Series Chardonnay 2015 92 2017-21 Curicó Valley Tasted in Lincoln s Inn March 2017 Citrus and apple the start of the palate is bright the nose floral and fresh. Ripe melon and greengage the mid palate has depth of flavour rich and quite sweet the ripe fruit at the back underpinned by citrus the finish fresh with length of flavour. August 07, 2012 CHILE Sweet yellow melon rather overshadowed by oak. Fresher fruit feel on the palate with melon and greengage to the fore. Good length but the oak comes through quite strongly. Montes Alpha Chardonnay 2007 90 2009-12 Casablanca Valley September 2008 The nose has lots of fleshy melon enriched by toasty butterscotch. The weight of fruit on the palate gives richness and flesh but it is underpinned by fresher grapefruit that lifts and lengthens the flavours. September 2009 88 Fruit richness fleshes out the nose but behind the melon and greengage is a touch of oak. Fruit weight fills out the mid palate, the sweetness of melon overtaken on the finish by the oak. Montes Alpha Chardonnay 2008 91 2010-14 Casablanca Valley September 2010 There is a lot of fruit on the nose and the fleshy greengage lends weight to the palate. A touch of oak adds to complexity rather than overpowering. Rich ripe fruit fills out the back palate. Montes Alpha Chardonnay 2011 91 2013-17 Casablanca Valley The nose is full of ripe fruit sweet melon and pineapple and the start of the palate is fleshy and quite fat. A touch of lime and grapefruit helps to balance the sweetness and give a fresher feel in the middle but the back palate and finish are fleshy and rich fruited. Montes Alpha Chardonnay 2013 92 2016-20 Casablanca Valley Tasted at the winery February 2016 Depth of fruit on the nose the palate has ripe melon richness fleshy in the middle. At the back crisp apple gives freshness a good balance bringing out a hint of oak the finish has richness sweet ripe greengage. Montes Alpha Chardonnay 2014 94 2017-23 Aconcagua Valley Tasted at the winery February 2017 The nose has honeyed richness the palate depth of flavour with ripe greengage and honeydew melon. A nice balance coming from the underlying freshness crisp apple at the back the finish has the richness and sweetness of ripe fruit. CHILE August 07, 2012 Colchagua September 2009 The hints of rose petal overlay the fresh red fruit mix that comes out on the palate. The palate starts quite light but there are richer fruit flavours towards the back, spiced up by a hint of black pepper. Cherub Rosé Syrah 2009 90 2010-11 Colchagua September 2010 Fresh strawberries backed by raspberries are there on the nose and feature strongly on the palate. There are sweeter richer flavours on the mid palate with the red fruit freshness showing towards the back. Cherub Rosé 2012 89 2013-16 Syrah The nose is quite rich with the sweetness of ripe strawberry and this fills out the start of the palate. Although the mid palate is fresher the fruit towards the back is rich filling it out. The raspberry redcurrant mix gives freshness on the finish. Cherub Rosé de Syrah 2013 88 2016-17 Tasted at the winery February 2016 Both nose and palate have a strong raspberry character bright and fresh in the middle lighter at the back the fruit on the finish is very fresh. Montes Cherub Rosé de Syrah 2016 89 2017-19 Syrah 85% Grenache 15% Tasted at the winery February 2017 The nose has fresh red fruits the palate redcurrant and wild strawberry. Light and bright in the middle the back palate has more depth some rich fruit but it is lighter on the finish with fragrant freshness. Red Wines Pinot Noir 2008 90 Casablanca September 2009 The nose is packed out with fruit, first mulberry then bramble. The start of the palate light but there is mid sweetness depth of flavour the fresh fruits come through at the back the finish mulberry fresh. Limited Selection Pinot Noir 2009 90 2010-12 Casablanca September 2010 Although it appears quite light on the nose there are more concentrated flavours on the palate. Mulberry appears to dominate but its red fruited freshness is nicely balanced by sweeter blackberry. The flavours last well on the finish. Limited Selection Pinot Noir 2014 92 2016-19 Aconcagua Valley Tasted at the winery February 2016 Red fruits the nose is bright the start of the palate richer with more depth of flavour. The red fruits on the mid palate are bright layers of fresh fruits fragrant at the back the finish has length of flavour and raspberry freshness. Montes Alpha Pinot Noir 2007 95 Leyda September 2008 The nose is packed with fruit ripe bramble and black plum refreshed and spiced up by mulberry. The palate has weight of fruit, all feeling sweet and ripe, this richness so well balanced by red fruits ensuring freshness on the lovely long finish. September 2009 91 The mulberries on the nose are ripe giving a sweet fruited feel. Behind the sweetness are fresher red fruits, raspberries and wild strawberries. The palate has a lovely weight of flavour and there is flesh on the finish. Montes Alpha Pinot Noir 2008 91 2010-14 Casablanca September 2010 The mix of mulberry and red cherry is quite rich filling out the nose and giving some flesh on the palate. There is a sweet feel on the mid palate ripe fruit but the sweetness is well balanced by freshness and the finish has a lovely minty twist. The mid palate is remarkably sweet quite heavy with just a hint of alcohol and the finish is lacking in freshness and elegance. Montes Alpha Pinot Noir 2014 94 2016-20 Aconcagua Valley Tasted at the winery February 2016 Lots of complexity black fruits tend to dominate fresh bramble is backed by richer black cherry. The mid palate has breadth of flavour supple richness and depth at the back but there is balance an underlying freshness a bramble and bilberry mix that gives brightness on the finish. Montes Alpha Pinot Noir 2015 93 2017-21 Aconcagua Valley Tasted at the winery February 2017 Cerise cherry brambles both nose and palate are fresh the start light and fragrant. Sweet ripe fruit the mid palate has depth of flavour the richness underpinned by fresh fruit the finish is long fragrant with bramble and mulberry. Mulberry and red cherry are in evidence with some richer blacker fruits showing towards the back. The palate has lots of powerful flavours, cassis and sloe with bilberry in the background all enlivened by the forest leaf greenness.
