Replace it with a steel stake, preferably solid round stock or rebar, ½ in diameter long enough to drive into solid ground 12 to 24 below pot bottom and reaching to graft at top of tree. Tie at several points with long term life tie material. Use of large diameter wood stakes or metal fence posts can result in excessive root damage. If planting in a strong wind area, consider a tee at top of stake and a small blade under soil surface to prevent pivoting of the entire rose head which can lead to stem breakage. 5
