New Releases For 2010... The Hazelburn that has sold out internationally finally arrives in Oz. Hazelburn 12yo Sherry 700ml 46% $135.00 Springbank Distiller's latest triple distilled, ex sherry cask matured, unpeated single malt. And I have to say that this is one sensational malt! And I mean that in its truest sense: the nose is subtly expressive, plenty of old, dark furniture notes, hints of dried orange zest, pepper, cardamom with a hint of bitter marmalade. Very supple, very classy with all the senses fully engaged. So bring on the palate: Fabulous oak: plenty of dried fruits, bitter orange that sits well with subtle malt. Initially sweet then the pepper and crisp spirit arrives at the end leaving a very intriguing, but lasting finish. Typical Springbank: lots of angles & crisp intensity as well as being just huge on the palate. Magic stuff. The Springbank Small Cask Experiment...: The fruits of their labour have finally been bottled Springbank 2001 Vintage Batch 1 700ml 55.3% $113.00 Just in! The latest release in the Springbank Vintages line-up and this time, the 2001 model has been fully matured for 8 years in small oak casks, maybe this is an extension of last year s fabulous PSI bottling?. The nose is soft and fruity, hints of black berry & citrus fruit flavours wrapped up in butterscotch flavoured oak. But just smelling it gives no indication of what is to follow on the palate. Initially there is a big burst of flavour that just keeps on rolling down the palate. It starts angular, tight, zest and salty then the middle of your mouth is flooded with honey, cream and vanilla flavours. And it's only at then end do you taste the drying peat. What an experience...and it's only 8 years of age. Call: 08-8365-4722
New Releases For 2010 Duthies by Cadenhead High quality dramming at an affordable price! Duthies Clynelish 14yo 700ml 46% $104 I like this new range from Cadenhead. Never been a fan of the old black, brooding packaging the old Cadenheads came in. This Clynelish is loaded up with marzipan, fresh orange zest and of course Clynelish's famous seaside saltiness. It initially starts of tasting hot and spirity, in fact it's quite bracing then it gets sweet and syrupy with a slight hint of peat at the end. The finish is crisply dry and peppery...and lasting. Most intriguing. Duthies Glenrothes 15yo 700ml 46% $112 A private bottling of Glenrothes is always a treat. And this offering from Cadenhead's Duthies range is a beaut. Smelling of Highland toffee with hints of treacle and marzipan while on the palate it is surprisingly dry yet sweet with plenty of tropical fruits and treacle flavours. Overall it is a full bodied style that has a dry finish. Duthies Highland Park 17yo 700ml 46% $121 Wow! Where did this come from. Pure Highland Park spirit that is so very zesty, dry and tangy. And get a load of the nose, it is so pungent, clean and fresh, chocked up with salty seaside notes and a fruitiness that reminds me of Fruit Tingles. And the dry zestiness continues to grab you once you get it into your mouth. Definitely pre-dinner and I reckon it works so well with grilled sardines. My mouth is just watering as I'm writing this down. Fabbo Duthies! Duthies Laphroaig 11yo 700ml 46% $115 An offshoot of Wm Cadenhead, the Duthies range offers some pretty fine and well aged dramming and this L'Frog is no exception. This malt just sneaks up on you. At first you think it's sweet and gentle and then the peat kicks in and boy, does it have an impact. And then the dark chocolate, pepper and cinnamon arrives as well. And the coal smoke on the finish is very surprising as well as very satisfying. This ain't no bog standard Laphroaig...but that's why I love it! Great stuff. Call: 08-8365-4722
Springbank The Core Range A return to traditional values Springbank 10yo 700ml 46% $89.00 The Tasty Dram. From the highly individual and delightfully idiosyncratic Springbank Distillers comes their flagship Springbank 10yo: 2.8 distilled & lightly peated to 12-15ppm. The basic 10yo is a very bright, ex bourbon cask matured whisky with noticeable seaside & citrus fruit characters, along with a degree of complexity with balance. Malt, oak, nutmeg, cinnamon & a salty tingle all appear at the end of this very tasty dram. Springbank 10yo 100 Proof 700ml 57% $112.00 Pure Springbank. From its inception in 2004, the 10yo 100 Proof has been a hit with Aussies right around the country. It s a big, crunchy style, all ex-bourbon oak matured, that smells of dried apricots, ginger, butter toffee and marzipan. In the mouth it is very full bodied, chocked up with malt, sweet oak and a honey richness that is very engaging. It finishes sweet with a hint of peat. Springbank 15yo 700ml 46% $127.00 The Graceful Springbank. From the august Beverage Tasting Institute, Pure golden straw colour. Vibrant aromas of honeyed rye toast, exotic spices, toffee, and floral peat aromas. A bold, supple entry leads to a slick, dry-yet-fruity full body of figs, toffee, mossy earth, and orange blossom honeyed drizzled nut toast. Finishes with long, buttery, wood spice, peat, and river stone fade. A graceful, powerful single malt with beautifully balanced peat honeyed oak and peat elements. Springbank 18yo 700ml 46% $187.00 Majestic Springbank The superstar finally arrives. We've been hanging out for this for ages. Medium to full bodied style, matured in both ex sherry (80%) and ex bourbon casks. Only 7800 bottles produced and now totally sold in the UK! This malt is all about precision & refinement...nothing is out of place: from the restrained nose of fruit cake with marzipan and a hint of pine smoke to the very long, lightly peated, crisply malty & fruity palate with a dry smokey finish: this malt hums. And keeps on humming for quite some time. www.theoddwhiskycoy.com.au
Springbank The Specials Unique, rare & Springbank 1997 Vintage Batch 1 700ml 55.2% $136.00 This is a brilliant, dry & gingery Springbank fully matured in re-charred dry Oloroso sherry barrels. This malt is so finely tuned that it could be an F1 racer. As the Distillery says, this malt smells of brown toast & butter and then comes the marmalade & the ice cream. I m getting hungry. Get into the mouth and then you see how rich it is and how huge the oak is as well, but there s also some citrus & salt tanginess as well. The finish is long, rich, warming and lasting. Springbank 1997 Vintage Batch 2 700ml 54.9% $113.00 Now you would think that Batch 2 of the 1997 Vintage release would be similar to Batch 1, which was only released 12 months or so ago. We're talking about Springbank here, so it ain't. This is so incredibly sweet, rich and very sherried. Quite remarkable, and like Batch 1, highly enjoyable. Springbank 1998 PSI Small Cask 700ml 53.3% $159.00 Get a hold of Jim Murray s Whisky Bible 2010 and see why he rated it 95pts and devoted over 120 words in describing it. He finishes by stating, This is the best independent Springbank I ve tasted in yonks. Sorry Mr Murray, but it is fact an official bottling for Premium Scotch Importers. Springbank Marsala 9yo 700ml 58% $121.00 An excellent combination of casks that contained Sicily s famed rich & spicy fortified wine and the expressive ex-bourbon casks that define Springbank. The distillery describes this malt as being sweet & syrupy, smelling of crème caramel with a hint of rum & raisin chocolate and quite mouthfilling.. Springbank Madeira 11yo 700ml 55.1% $128.00 11 years in Madeira casks accounts sweetness on the nose, with notes of butter shortbread, demerara sugar, and chocolate orange. Look a little deeper and the astounding complexity of the flavours from the Madeira casks become apparent. On the palate there's plenty of brown sugar, hot chocolate, a hint of mint and butter and the gentlest hint of peat spice. Springbank Rum 16yo 700ml 54.2% $145.00 Eight years in bourbon then an additional 8 years in rum wood leaves a very satisfying and highly intriguing malt. Light & flowery on the nose, but the palate is rich & creamy and full of demerara sugar, butterscotch & honey flavours. www.theoddwhiskycoy.com.au
Longrow Double Distilled Uncompromising quality, unbending peat Longrow CV 700ml 46% $91.00 For me, this was a standout malt in 2008 & 09: A marriage of 7, 10 and 14yo Longrow spirits that have been aged in bourbon, sherry, port and rum casks resulting in a whisky that is a joy to behold. Mainly for its gentle balance and marvellous dry embery smoke. Murray loved it...95.5pts Bible 2010 Longrow 7yo Gaja Barolo 700ml 55.8% $121.00 As Dave Lister would say, "brutal". Take a very young, highly peated, massively alcoholic Longrow and age it in used Angelo Gaja (the father of the modern Italian wine industry) French oak barriques that have been used for his famous Barolo wine (nebbiolo) and what you get is a blatantly aggressive, densely smokey and very meaty malt. And does it work? Wow does it work!! Breathtaking. Longrow 10yo 700ml 46% $123.00 The 10yo is a mix of 60% sherry and 40% bourbon matured, very clean, pretty peaty if a little unruly. Smoke, tar & peat if you really want to be blunt but there is some pleasing mid palate sweetness. Longrow 10yo 100 Proof 700ml 57% $138.00 100% bourbon oak matured, it smells sweet and malty with feint iodine notes. Not exactly expressive in the peat department, but hey, we are talking about Springbank here! On the palate: oily and dense with the sooty & embery peat more in the background than up front. The finish is not surprisingly salty.for that is what Longrow is all about. Longrow 14yo 700ml 46% $135.00 Compared with the 10yo & the 100 proof, the 14yo introduces a bit more depth, a touch of elegance and has a couple of Longrow sherry casks thrown in for good measure. Cream, apricots, chocolate & burnt embers. Longrow 18yo 750ml 46% $355.00 Whisky pundit, taster & Malt Maniac Serge Valentin has described this very limited edition malt as, legend of the future while Mr Murray describes it as, The most subtle and sophisticated Longrow I ve seen for 20yrs 94pts Call: 08-8365-4722
Hazelburn Triple Distilled Finally coming of age Hazelburn 8yo 700ml 46% $99.00 From Springbank Distillers comes this triple distilled, highly fragrant and dare I say elegant whisky that s been matured in 60% ex bourbon casks and 40% sherry butts. A very pre-dinner dram, when the palate needs invigorating and the appetite needs teasing. From the distillery: Light and delicate, the 8 year old Hazelburn has subtle nuances of raspberry coulis, shortbread and sherbet. Sweet vanilla, malt and white oak are also apparent. On the palate, elegantly sweet and malty. Loads of vanilla flavour combines well with toasty oak notes leading to a spicy aftertaste. No smokiness in triple distilled Hazelburn. Finally the finish: A slightly peppery finish to a refined and elegant dram. From Dave Broom. Lovely feel. Great length. Good impact for a light whisky. Highly recommended. 8/10 Rating Whisky Magazine Hazelburn 12yo Sherry 700ml 46% $135.00 Please go to page 3 for a full review! Kilkerran The New Kid On The Block Kilkerran Work In Progress 5yo 700ml 46% $95.00 Double distilled & lightly peated. Yes there is a whiff of feintiness on the nose (not fully matured spirit) but the clean and intensive attack on the palate, the crisp & chewy malt along with some bracing peat, made for a splendid, highly complex & captivating malt. Even at 5 years! Just imagine it at year 10!! I just could nose this malt all day...so very intriguing. Kilkerran is the first single malt to come from Springbank's new standalone Glengyle distillery. www.theoddwhiskycoy.com.au
