CALLING ALL CAJUNS! A Publication of The Acadian Memorial Foundation L ordre du bon temps 2015 a great success L'Ordre du Bon Temps fundraising gala held Thursday, November 12th at the Wyndham Garden Hotel Acadiana in Lafayette was a GREAT success thanks to all of the sponsors, donors and volunteers. The Acadian Memorial Foundation sincerely appreciates this vote of confidence as does the curator and staff of the Acadian Memorial. Grand Masters led the program as Preston Guillotte, Grand Master I gave the Invocation, Grand Master II, Ray Trahan presented the official Grand Master pin, Grand Master IV, Raymond Hebert read "The Story of L'Ordre du Bon Temps" and Grand Master VI, Ernest Freyou performed induction ceremonies and passed the insignia of the order to Grand Master VII, Paul A. Durand. Durand, CEO and President of St. Martin Bank & Trust Co., is a member of the Board of Directors and a long-time supporter of the Foundation's events especially the annual Acadian Memorial Festival. Continuing a long standing tradition, a costumed "Champlain" aka Mr. James Akers, called out Fifteen Gentlemen to toast the new Grand Master with the toasting led by Grand Master Freyou. Grand Master Durand's first duty was to induct a new member of L'Ordre du Bon Temps Louisiane, Patricia GuteKunst. "Patty" is also a member of the Foundation Board of Directors and fulfilled the requirement for membership by maintaining dues to Friends of the Foundation and paying the membership fee for L'Ordre du Bon Temps Louisiane. She received a beautiful and unique Certificate as a Distinguished Member and the Medallion of the Order. An added attraction to the event was a large variety of Silent Auction items which included several offerings of different flavors of Louisiana-made rum, the Tabasco food tour for two, a Spa makeover for eight and many other wonderful things that were scooped up by an eager crowd. Guest speaker was Senator Fred H. Mills, Jr., also a member of the Foundation's Board of Directors. Mills delivery emphasized the success of the "new Acadians", a play on the term "nouvelle Acadie" first used by the priest who accompanied the Acadians to the Attakapas and Opelousas districts in 1765. And, true to form he also entertained with jokes and funny stories. Mills also conducted a live auction of a George Rodrigue print titled "Cat Tie", and it was his lively encouragement of the bidding that netted a nice large sum for the fundraising effort. Continues on page 5.

Calling All Cajuns 2 Letter from the President First, I hope you have all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Secondly, I want to thank and commend the few board members and volunteers who carried the lion s share of the work in organizing and putting on the L Ordre du Bon Temps Gala. You did a beautiful and masterful job. Thank you as well to Mr. Paul Durand for serving as our Grand Master this year. Thank you to all who contributed to the L Ordre du Bon Temps Gala. The Gala is the Acadian Memorial s primary fundraiser, and the funds raised are used for upkeep, maintenance, updating, and operation of the Acadian Memorial. The Board of the Acadian Memorial Foundation has now focused on the planning and organization of its next Acadian Memorial Heritage Festival, which will be held in March 2016. I implore you to volunteer to help with the planning and organization of the festival, and to volunteer to assist at the festival itself. The Board of the Acadian Memorial Foundation recently voted to again hold a raffle fundraiser, where it will print and sell 200 tickets at the cost of $25.00 per ticket. Each ticket purchased prior to the first drawing, will have 27 opportunities to win $100.00, $50.00, and $25.00 in cash. Drawings will be held every month, beginning in March 2016 and ending in November 2016. Hopefully the tickets will be available for purchase prior to Christmas, as they certainly make great stocking stuffers. Please plan on purchasing at least one ticket, and please help in the sales of the tickets. In conclusion, I wish you all a wonderful and safe holiday season. Please keep all of our friends in France and Belgium in mind and remember them in your prayers during these turbulent and difficult times. Calling All Cajuns 5 Accolades for the work of the foundation Reprinted with permission from the author. In a recent letter to Paul Durand, L Ordre du Bon Temps 2015 Grand Master, Frank Kiridly of Smithtown, New York writes: With great joy we learned about Acadian Memorial honoring you to be Grand Master for L Ordre du Bon Temps. From what I read in your letter Acadian Memorial is a worthy organization that upholds and preserves the cultural and historic value on which this country was founded. I especially appreciate it being a first generation immigrant from Franco-Lebanese heritage. So congratulations Paul! Thank you very much for your kind invitation and we wish we could attend in person. Please accept our donation to the foundation. LDBT Continued from page 1. Bon chance! Et laissez les bon temps rouler. Attendees were offered dance lessons by local Cajun dancers Lou and Cal Courville who showed off their talent with a short performance then led a group from the audience through several basic steps. Allons Danser Nous is their teaching DVD. Closing remarks were made by Foundation Board President, Randal L. Menard. L'Ordre du Bon Temps Louisiane was organized in 2006 and commemorates a social event created by Samuel de Champlain in 1606 considered to be the oldest social club in North America. The objective of the Louisiana club is to provide fellowship and good cheer to members at a gourmet banquet with the motto, Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler - which was certainly fulfilled on 12 November 2015, 409 years after Champlain's first toast! New Member Inducted into L'Ordre du Bon Temps Louisiane Very truly yours, Frank Kiridly We graciously acknowledge the kind words and support received from Mr. Kiridly. Newest member of Louisiana's own L'Ordre du Bon Temps Louisiane, Patricia "Patty" GuteKunst receives her Certificate and Medallion from Grand Master VII, Paul A. Durand at the gala event on November 12th. Cheryl Thomas Stromeyer of Baton Rouge, also a new member, was not able to attend. See Friends of the Foundation form for information on becoming a member of L'Ordre du Bon Temps Louisiane.

Calling All Cajuns 6 250 Years of Acadian Presence-The Journey Exhibit 250 years of Acadian presence: The Journey, is an exhibit at the Acadian Memorial celebrating the arrival of the Acadians in the Attakapas and Opelousas Districts in 1765. The Journey is told through early birth, death and marriage records, from the Grand Pré records from St. Charles des Mines Church housed at the Diocese of Baton Rouge Archives, as well as Father de Civrey s early records preserved by Father Barrière at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church in St. Martinville. "It was really fun to put together an exhibit that not only highlighted historical documents, but also told you some of the stories of the families that came here. The strength and courage and community of these people is very impressive," said Elaine Clement, Acadian Memorial Director and Curator of the exhibit. A transcription allows visitors to follow the documents and stories in English and French. We ve had a couple of students who have come in to use the exhibit as part of their research for a project. Several teachers from Breaux Bridge Primary saw a story on the exhibit on KATC and came to view the museums and the exhibit to see how they could use them in their classroom work and plan for a visit next year. Thanks to Anne Boltin, the Head Archivist at the Diocese of Baton Rouge, who shared copies of the Grand Pré documents with us on paper from the 18 th century. She also spent the day with us on Oct. 8 and brought two of the original register covers. That was indeed a very special experience! Thanks also to Marty Guidry, who put together a list of documents that linked families between the Grand Pré and St. Martin de Tours records. Un grand merci to Patty Gutekunst, a great mentor, co-conspirator and font of knowledge, as well as Jolene Adam, who helped translate into French and then took my work and edited it and made it pretty. The exhibit funded by the Acadian Memorial Foundation and the City of St. Martinville will remain open through the end of 2015. -Elaine Clément Merci Our Committees Thanks to all the committee members who worked so hard to make the L'Ordre du Bon Temps gala the success it was: Steering Committee: Sylvia Bienvenu, Janie Bulliard, Elaine Clement, Paul Durand, Ernest Freyou, Marty Guidry, Preston Guillotte and Randy Menard Decorations: James Akers, Lynne Bonin, Brenda Courville.
