PATIENT EDUCATION patienteducation.osumc.edu Here is information about the diet and food choices available to you during your hospital stay. Our goal is to find ways for you to get the nutrition you need to help your body recover from the effects of your disease and treatment. We are here to help with the special nutrition needs you may have during this time. During this time, you may not be able to eat as normal. This may be due to temporary taste or appetite changes. It is important to eat a healthy diet and choose a variety of food choices. If your doctor has restricted your diet, you will be given information on what that means for your food choices. The Nutrition Services staff is available to help, so please let us know if there is something specific you would like to eat. We have a variety of food items, snacks and drinks to help meet your nutritional needs while you are in the hospital. The nursing care staff can bring you certain food items that are available on the unit, or call us if you would like us to meet with you. Our Nutrition Services Team includes the following members: Registered Dietitians (RDs) - Licensed professionals who manage your nutrition care. Dietetic Technicians (Diet Techs) - Along with the dietitians, diet techs offer nutrition education, assist with your nutrition care and may help with your meal choices. Nutrition Aides Aides visit daily to ask for your meal choices and serve your meals. Other Nutrition Services Staff - staff who work behind the scenes to prepare your meals. This handout is for informational purposes only. Talk with your doctor or health care team if you have any questions about your care. August 18, 2017. The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.

If you have questions or need more information during your stay at The James, please feel free to call Nutrition Services at (614) 293-8711. Food and Meal Choices A member of our team will visit you to help you choose your breakfast, lunch and dinner for each day. First, we will offer our most popular item, the Chef s Special of the day. If the special does not interest you, we ll find a choice you like. Here are some other items you may request: Bagel w/cream cheese Buttermilk Pancakes Cheese Omelet Cheese Pizza Chef Salad Chicken Salad Cinnamon French Toast Citrus Salmon Fillet Grilled Chicken Hamburger Hot Dog Macaroni & Cheese There may be times you are not in your room when we stop by to take your order. In that case, we will prepare your meal based on our most popular food item or your previous food choices. Snack Choices Each nursing unit has a small kitchen stocked with foods. You may ask your Patient Care Associate (PCA) or nurse for these items at anytime and they will bring them to you. Here are some items available from this kitchen: Applesauce Bread Canned Fruit Cereals Coffee/Tea Cookies Crackers Ice Cream Jelly Milk/Juice Oral Nutrition Supplements Peanut Butter Popsicles Pudding Soup Condiments including salt, pepper, sugar, creamer, mustard and ketchup

If You Miss a Meal If you were just admitted or you were at a test and missed a meal, the staff will call us to let us know you are ready for your meal. Your meal should arrive in 30 to 40 minutes. You may also ask your Patient Care Associate (PCA) or nurse for foods from the kitchen on the nursing unit. Meal ideas include: soup and crackers, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with fruit and pudding, or oatmeal with a cup of hot tea. Meal trays can be ordered for your guests. To obtain a guest tray, ask your PCA or nurse to contact a Food Service Manager. The cost is $5.00 per tray (price subject to change). Nutrition Questions and Answers Q: What if I need to increase the amount of calories or protein in my meals? A: Many people with cancer need to increase the amount of calories and/or protein they eat during their treatment. This can help prevent weight loss and improve healing, but it may be hard at times for you to eat enough food. Here are some ways to increase your calorie or protein: Add high protein foods to your meals and snacks. For example: yogurt, cottage cheese, pudding, milk and oral nutrition supplements. Add an oral nutrition supplement. Nutrition Services has a variety of oral supplements available. Your Diet Tech can arrange for you to have these oral supplements on your tray at meal times. The following choices are available: Ensure Plus: Available in vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. May be used by most patients on most diets. Glucerna Shake: Available in vanilla and chocolate. Best for patients on diets that monitor blood sugar levels. Enlive: A juice-like supplement available in peach and apple. May be used by most patients, including those on clear liquid or renal diets. Health Shake: A frozen, milk-based supplement. Available in vanilla and chocolate.

Q: What if I want to eat home cooked food? A: We encourage you to have your family and friends bring in your favorite foods. This is a great way to let them feel they are helping with your care. Here are some guidelines to make sure this food is safe: All foods must follow your diet order. If you are not sure whether a food item from home is okay for you to eat, please ask your PCA or nurse to call the Diet Tech or Dietitian. Remember to keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Label all food items with your name, room number, and the date the food was brought in. Bring small portions of foods in microwave safe containers. Throw away all opened foods within 3 days. Q: What if I need or want more information? A: You can ask your nurse to contact a Diet Tech or Dietitian. We will be glad to talk with you about your diet or discuss your food options. You can also get more information from: The Patient and Family Resource Center located on the ground floor of The James near the grand staircase. Staff at the center can prepare a packet of information with answers to your health-related questions. To make a request for health information, you may: Visit the center during business hours Call 614-366-0602 Send an email to cancerinfo@osumc.edu.
