March 2017 The Y.E.S. Newsletter A monthly publication for members of the Y.E.S. Annual Membership Potluck Think Green! Annual Meeting...celebrating the promise of spring, student scholarships and YOU our VIPs! Think Green, Think Green, Think Green!!! The Y.E.S. Membership Business Meeting will be held Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at the Yakima Valley Museum. Members always look forward to this fun celebration potluck where we all get to share our favorite and maybe even secret recipes and wines. Members are asked to contribute a dish for our potluck dinner such as casseroles, hot dishes, main courses, sides, salads, appetizers, and desserts. Favorite wines are also welcome. The evening will start with a short business meeting which will include the election of new board members. Special guests will be Y.E.S. scholarship recipients in the viticulture programs that our Y.E.S. membership supports, and we will have an opportunity to taste wines produced by the viticulture programs! As we are all so very ready for SPRING to arrive, we are having GREEN as our theme and at this time of year that means shamrocks and St. Patrick's Day (without the snakes, of course). For our enjoyment, we will also have Irish music provided by Ken McKiernan. Your suggestions, ideas, and support are what makes the upcoming year s events a success to YOU. It is time to renew your annual membership or to join Y.E.S.! As always, volunteers are sought for setup, serving and clean-up. See you there! Your hosts, Pam Friedt, Terese Abreu and Brad Baldwin THE DETAILS Date: Wednesday, March 8 Time: 6:30 p.m. registration; 7 p.m. start Location: Yakima Valley Museum 2105 Tieton Drive, Yakima Cost: Members $10; Non-members $20 Notes: Bring one wine glass and a potluck dish Registration deadlines: Mail in: Postmarked by Friday, March 3 Online: Brown Paper Tickets by 11:59 p.m. Sunday, March 5 Phone: Call Marie Clark at 697-3364 until 8 p.m. Monday, March 6. Page 2 March 2017 April Teaser: PLATINUM XV This year s Platinum dinner will be held on April 8th, 2017 at the Yakima Country Club. Our goal is to try to make each dinner better than the year before and we think we have achieved it for our 15th anniversary dinner! This year we will be featuring 20 wines; 15 wines that won a Double Platinum award and five wines that won Platinum. Some of the highlights of this year s event will be: Reustle-Prayer Rock Vineyards from Oregon won a total of 10 Platinum awards this year and will be presenting three of their Gruner Veltliners, a varietal a lot of people are unfamiliar with. They will also be in attendance to speak about their wines. Maryhill Winery also won 10 Platinum awards and will be attending the dinner and presenting their Double Platinum winning Viognier. Gehringer Brothers, from the wine country in Canada, won eight Platinum awards this year and we will be serving two of them for the evening; a Double Platinum unoaked Chardonnay and a Riesling Ice Wine. They will also be in attendance. The students of the Yakima Valley Community College Vineyard and Winery Technology program won a Double Platinum for their Tempranillo. It will be served during the Winemaker s Reception. Trent Ball, the program s director, will be attending the event. We will be serving six wines; two whites, a rosé and three reds (all Double Platinum winners) during the Winemaker s Reception, along with passed appetizers of Skookum oysters, duck croquettes, skewered poussin and Texas wild boar sausage. For the dinner, the first course will be fresh Dayboat scallops over caramel-roasted Cipollini onions and shaved Brussels sprouts accompanied by the three Gruner- Veltliners. The second course will be seared Ahi tuna, baby spinach and field greens with a Dijon-tarragon dressing accompanied with three Chardonnays. The third course will be slow-roasted herbed leg of lamb, spring herbs marinated with black truffle wine demi glace and spring vegetables accompanied by three Cabernet Sauvignons. The fourth course will be tender beef shortribs, black and white pepper, bouquet garni, Roma tomatoes and a balsamic root vegetable hash. This course will be paired with three Petit Sirahs. For the dessert course, a caramelized Maui pineapple and orange blossom honey Chevre cheesecake will be served with two Platinum winning ice wines. We will have both a silent auction during the reception, with the beautiful baskets and award winning wine lots that our members have come to expect, as well as a live auction of wines, dinners and a Platinum guest judging during the course of the evening. Proceeds from this event will again go to wine industry scholarships at Yakima Valley Community College, WSU Tri-Cities School of Enology, the wine program at Walla Walla Community College in remembrance of Stan Clark, a former Y.E.S. member, Okanagan Community College in British Columbia, and the wine program at Umpqua College in Oregon. Please note that all auction items must be paid for with cash or checks only as Y.E.S. is unable to accept credit cards at the Yakima Country Club. For those attendees from out of the area, we have arranged with the Yakima Hilton Garden Inn (509-454-1111) for a special room rate of $129 for our out-oftown guests. When booking just ask for the Y.E.S. Platinum Dinner event rate (Group Code 0408EN). For those members and guests concerned about drinking wine and then driving, we will again have the popular option of using Aladin Limo Service to shuttle people back and forth to the event for the special price of $30 per person. Please contact owner Steve Zien at 509-969-2877 to make arrangements. The ticket cost this year is $150 per person if the tickets are purchased by March 29th. After the 29th the cost will increase to $165 per person. Again, we have managed to keep the ticket prices the same as last year. The best and easiest way to get tickets is to go to BrownPaperTickets.com, click on find an event, click on search events, enter the number 2840660 and use your credit card. This event is only open to members of the Yakima Enological Society, the Yakima County Club and any invited guests. Last year s event sold out early so don t delay if you are planning to attend and enjoy one of the premier wine events in the Pacific Northwest. Chuck Johnson

Page 3 February event rescheduled to May Due to the hazardous snow/ice weather, the February tasting was cancelled. When will this weather ever end??! Fortunately we have confirmed Carousel French Cuisine and Masset Winery have rescheduled the event (same menu & wine pairings) to Wednesday May 10 th at The Vine Venue. We also will have Gary Malner, the amazing accordionist joining us that evening as well!! Let's just hope we will be seeing some green by then and no more SNOW!!! See all of you for this fun event in May!! Wine rivia A plausible history of the toast: If you signed up for the February tasting and are still able to go in May, all you need to do is send a confirming email to Marie Clark. If you are unable to make the event in May, then please send an email to Marie requesting a refund. Connie Eisenzimmer Test your wine knowledge each month with a new wine term and definition. Cheers! we say, as we clink glasses with our friends and family. This ritual started back in the Middle Ages, when poisoning was a favorite way to get rid of an enemy. To be sure their glasses were poison-free, drinkers would first pour a bit of wine into each others glasses, so if there was poison in one, it was now in both. But soon, people in the company of trusted companions would pass over the tasting and just clink their glasses instead. March 2017 Membership Update March is New and Renewal month for membership in the Yakima Enological Society. For the 2017-2018 year, membership dues are the same: $40 per couple and $25 per single. Make sure you fill out the Y.E.S. Membership form which is attached to this month s newsletter. Mail the completed application along with your check, prior to the March Annual Meeting. At this meeting, you will be able to cast your vote for three potential board members, but only if your membership has been renewed or if you are a new member. As a volunteer organization, we encourage members to be involved. Please make sure you check the ways that you can help Y.E.S. Marietta Barr Get involved and volunteer. Although there s no real proof to this story, historians speculate that this custom is why To your health is a favorite saying along with the glasses clinking. Others say that the noise of the glasses clinking together was meant to dispel evil spirits. Either way, it s a nice way to start a meal or event. Submitted by Dorene Boyle It s fun!

President s Corner March 2017 March 8 is the Annual Y.E.S. Membership Meeting at the Yakima Valley Museum. Wine and a variety of delicious potluck dishes will be served. This is your chance as a member to get involved in the Y.E.S. organization by suggesting ideas for tasting events and/or planning a tasting event. With all the wineries in the Valley, we have ample opportunities for exciting new tastings. Also at this meeting, new Board members will be elected and several students who received a 2016 Platinum scholarship will talk about their future plans. Remember that to vote at this meeting you must have renewed your Y.E.S. membership for 2017-18. The cost is still a reasonable $25 for a single and $40 for a couple. Cheryl Probasco, Y.E.S.
