NATIVE SOIL Wine Is Love Three generations of an Italian-American winemaking family celebrate the centennial of their San Antonio Winery in Los Angeles. Story by Jeanne Boyer W30 JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2017 TASTES OF ITALIA TASTES hen Maddalena Satragni first met Stefano (Steve) Riboli in 1945, she was driving a tractor on a Chino, California farm. While it might not have been her most glamorous moment, it was filled with significance. She recalls that she was tanned and strong from working on the farm, driving the tractor down the rows to pick up just-harvested boxes of tomatoes. Her other job was putting caps and foil on bottles at nearby Padre Winery in Cucamonga. A mutual friend introduced her and another young woman, Mary, to Stefano, who was visiting from Los Angeles to buy grapes for his uncle s San Antonio Winery. Stefano asked Mary to the movies that Saturday. Maddalena allows that she was perhaps a bit miffed that the young winemaker (a bit of a city slicker!) asked Mary out first. But the next weekend it was her turn, with Stefano asking her to accompany him to a movie, which she did. Impressed by her work ethic as well as her other Maddalena and Stefano Riboli at their 1946 wedding. OF ITALIA JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2017 31
