BOTANICAL TAXON: Fragaria x ananassa. VARIETY TYPE: STRAWBERRY DENOMINATION: VR 2 PATENTED NAME: GARDA ORIGIN: obtained in the frame of the breeding Project supported by the Province and Growers Associations of Verona, by the working team coordinated by CRA - Unità di Ricerca per la Frutticoltura di Forlì (CRA-FRF), that includes Istituto Sperimentale di Frutticoltura Provincia di Verona, Aposcaligera and OP COZ from a complex intervarietal cross including as parents the varieties Addie, Alba, Belrubi, Cardinal and Holiday. Garda was selected in Verona in 2004 and commercially spread in 2012. EU patent n 2012/1671. PLANT: short-day cultivar adapted to Northern areas, because of medium-high chilling requirement, intermediate vigor and quite prostrate. It has been judged as positive both in Cesena and Verona area, showing a good adaptability in protected and open field cultures. This plant needs fertile and fumigated soils. In Verona fall culture, the yield is not always high in autumn. The plant is susceptible to anthracnose and Powdery mildew. FLOWER: medium-sized, very rich in pollen, high fertility allowing an always regular fruit shape even in bad weather conditions. Flowers are on the same level with leafs or slightly below. FLOWERING TIME: medium-early. HARVESTING TIME: early, almost the same period of Alba. FRUIT: conical shape, always regular, bigger in primary fruits, with green medium-sized calyx; the fall in fruit size in the second part of the harvest, especially together with high temperatures and high yield capacity, can be considered as a negative aspect; the fruit color is bright red, sometimes deep in warmer periods; the flesh is firm and the skin surface is very resistant to handlings; good taste.
