OUR FACILITIES The Vineyards - 250 acres of the highest quality vineyards owned by the Hidalgo family are used to produce our wines: - El Cuadrado, our biggest property, is located in the Balbaina District, only 7 miles away from the Atlantic Ocean, which gives our vines those special characters that make the wines so unique. - The soil from these vineyards are a compound of different Albarizas, some plots with more than 90% calcium carbonate. - Pastrana located at the Miraflores District of Sanlucar de Barrameda. The closest district from the ocean, 2 miles. The 10 Ha. Belongs to the family have an average age of 50 years old vines. The soil is one of the best albarizas in the region. Our especial Manzanilla and Amontillado Pastrana are one of the only single vineyards in the sherry area, the favorite among sherry experts. - Nowadays there is 80 wineries in the Sherry area, and only 30 of them have the Lagar to crush the grapes and do the whole process of vinification like we do, not only aging the wine like the majority of wineries in the area.
OUR FACILITIES THE BODEGAS in Sanlúcar de Barrameda Our company has two Cathedral style wineries, San Luis and San Fermin, located in the lower part of Sanlucar where the flor has the best living conditions due to the influence and proximity to the ocean, just 328 yards from the sea. San Luis and San Fermin are the only two wineries left in the lower part of Sanlucar and closest to the ocean. The high of the celling is 42 feet, helping the living condition of the Flor. San Roque is a small winery used only for aging color wines. The wines in San Roque has a minimum age of 20 years in oak and the oldest, 80 years. We own 8,000 American oak butts with a capacity of 550 liters each. Some of the butts have been in the winery since the time of its construction. 200 yards from the ocean 15 ft high, 36 ft wide and 130 ft long
QUALITY Our Wines For 225 years the quality has remained the same, being a top priority for the Hidalgo family. As tradition has been our guide, we now look into the future and we join the Sherry Revolution implementing old fashion techniques in our region such as pruning, fermenting in old casks, Asolear The Hidalgo family considers there is two different types of terroirs: - The vineyard (mainly neglected by other wineries) with locations in Balbaina and Miraflores Districts, the most sought after vineyards in the area produce top quality wines due to the proximity to the ocean. - Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana is a Cathedral style winery closest to the Ocean in Sanlucar. In 1875 Henry Vizetelly, well recognized wine critic wrote: The windows of this bodegas are placed rather high up, facing the sea to admit a full current of cool sea air passing through the building when the wind blows from that quarter. Although this conduces materially to the evaporation of the wine, which under ordinary circumstances, amounts to as much as 4 or more per cent annually, Senor Hidalgo considers that any extra loss in this respect is amply compensated for by the marked improvement which the wine undergoes The location of the winery is key to producing excellent wines and the Hidalgo Family knows this is what sets them apart.
