Siren and Odysseus 2 I am a Siren. People call me a monster, but I can sing beautifully. I am half and half Find me on a big aryballos in Case 7 (on the bottom shelf ) and draw in what is missing in my picture here. What is it that you have drawn? Odysseus (called Ulysses by the Romans) spent ten years travelling to get home after the Trojan War. During his travels he had many adventures and battled with many monsters. One of the monsters was a Cyclops. What was a Cyclops? Find Odysseus on a lamp in Case 8 escaping from the Cyclops cave. Can you see how Odysseus escaped? (You will have to look very carefully at the lamp.)
Heroes and monsters 3 I am the great hero Herakles, dedicated to freeing the earth from evil creatures. Find me on a little amphora in Case 4, wrestling with a sea monster, whose name is Triton or Nereus. The sea monster is half and half What do I always wear on my head and shoulders? (If you need a clue, go and look at the big poster of Greek Gods!) I am a great hero too! My name is Perseus. I have just killed the hideous Gorgon, Medusa. Can you see how I did it and what I used? Do you know what happened to people who looked at her? Can you find Medusa above the cases? Draw Medusa here
Soldiers 4 Find and tick: A vase-painting of soldiers in Case 5 A vase-painting of soldiers in Case 6 A vase-painting of soldiers in Case 13 Looking at the pictures on the vase in Case 6. What kinds of weapons do the soldiers have? How do the soldiers travel around? Which city state in Ancient Greece trained their soldiers the hardest? Who won the Trojan War? What did the Greeks use to trick the Trojans to get into the city gates?
Sport 5 Find this picture of a boy riding a horse in Case 6. This is the musuem s most famous object! Before exercising, boys and men smeared their whole bodies with olive oil. Go to Case 7 to find the little round Oil Bottles used for this. What kinds of things can you see painted on them for decoration? Draw an oil bottle Why do the bottles have such narrow necks? After exercising they scraped off the oil which would be mixed with dust and sweat. They used a scraper called a Strigil. Go to Case 11 and find one of these. Why do you think the Strigil is hollowed down the middle, like a spoon? Now go to Case 4 and find a bowl with a painting of a slave boy holding something. What is he holding? Why is the other man holding his arm out?
Go to Case 11 to see things used by women. Find the tall perfume bottles, called Alabastra. Decorate this one by using some of the designs on the bottles you can see in the case: Find and tick: A round clay jewellery box A bronze mirror Women 6 Notice the complicated hairstyles of the women on the pottery. What did women use to help keep their hairstyles in place? Draw a comb What is the comb made of?
Women s activities 7 Women spent a lot of time weaving cloth for clothes. Go to Case 10 and find three Loom Weights. Find the loom weights in this picture of women weaving cloth on a loom, and draw an arrow to them. This picture is adapted from a picture shown on a Greek pot. What purpose do the weights have? Women also brought up the children. Go to Case 9 and find some Toy Animals in the middle. Which kinds of toy animals can you see? Look on the 2nd shelf of Case 9 for this object that might have been used by a baby: What do you think it is?
Musical instruments 8 Go over to Case 6. There are some copies of ancient musical instruments. Among the copies there is one real ancient instrument. Draw a lyre Which is the real ancient one? What materials were used to make a Lyre? Which modern instrument do you think would sound most like a lyre? Name these instruments:
Parties 9 Drinking parties (Symposia) were very popular in ancient Greece. They took place after dinner. Go to Case 14 and find the food plates. Draw in the pictures on the fish plate: What is the dip in the middle for? Now find the Mixing Bowl used for mixing the strong Greek wine with water before drinking. Write down its Greek name: Notice the pictures on it: did people sit on chairs at dinner? Look at the Drinking Cups. They come in three different shapes. Tick each one as you find it:
