VVW News - April 2015 IRRESISTABLE RHONE RED 2012 Sablet (Notre Dame des Pallières) If you ve shopped here for awhile, you probably remember the oceans of Sablet we sold in the late 1980s and through most of the 1990s. Chateau du Trignon s Sablet was our best selling red wine for years and years, a delicious, reliable Rhone red at a bargain basement price. Sadly Trignon was sold, their quality declined, and it faded from the scene. But now we are back in the Sablet business with our current favorite for Rhone Valley bargains, Notre Dame des Pallières. Sablet is a village just north of Gigondas, in the sea of vineyards that covers the plain between Gigondas and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Notre Dame des Pallières Sablet is mostly Grenache with a portion of Syrah. This 2012 is fabulous right now, deep ruby red, a gorgeous fruit-driven aroma, its juicy, ripe fruit rippling with flavor and character. It s comfort wine, best enjoyed casually and uncritically, but you ll find yourself pondering how something this cheap can be this good. 2012 Sablet (Notre Dame des Pallières) $15.00 HALF-CASE SPECIAL 15 Percent Off $76.50 ($76.50/6 bottles = $12.75/bottle) SENSATIONAL OLD VINE SONOMA ZINFANDEL 2012 Ancient Field Blend Old Hill Ranch (Bucklin) If you ve ever liked Zin in the past, but the contemporary style of jammy, overly-extracted, one-dimensional fruitbombs has turned you off, this is the Zinfandel to re-ignite your passion. Old Hill Ranch is in Glen Ellen, and is one of the oldest vineyard sites in Sonoma. It is a unique field blend of ancient, dry-farmed vines, like many of the vineyards planted in the late 1800 s. It is predominately Zinfandel, but has significant interplantings of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouchet and at least two dozen other grape varietals. Will Bucklin s family bought the property in the early 1980s and nursed it back to health. Joel Peterson of Ravenswood began buying grapes in 1984, and soon his Old Hill Ranch bottlings became one of California s most sought after Zinfandels. Will Bucklin took over the management of the property from his stepfather in the late 1990s, and released his first vintage in 2000. The 2012 was recently released, and wow, what a gorgeous Zinfandel! It has oodles of fruit and flavor, it is plenty rich and deep, but unlike almost all the other Zinfandels made today, it retains a sense of refinement and precision. It is not a wine you tire of after one taste. Its flavors are alive, a constantly changing interplay of fruits and spices that will evolve and delight throughout your meal. There is a transparency and freshness to it that is virtually unique amongst today s Zinfandels. A translucent red, the Bordini flows with the essence of crushed flowers, berries and sweet baking spices, all of which come together in a mid-weight frame. This shows lovely density and richness in a classy, understated style, with plenty of detail and a long, polished finish. In 2007 the Bordini is a gem from La Spinetta 2013-2022 (92/100) - Antonio Galloni, Vinousmedia.com 2007 Barbaresco Cole (Moccagatta)... $ 98.00 $ 83.30 The 2007 Barbaresco Cole emerges from the glass with black cherries, mocha, menthol, spices, new leather and minerals, all wrapped around an intense wall of tannins. This powerful, muscular Barbaresco is pretty atypical in 2007, but it is fabulous just the same. The only thing the Cole needs is time. This is a substantial wine even by the outsized standards of a fine Clos du Roi. 2024+ (92/100) - Allen Meadows, Burghound.com 2012 Volnay Les Santenots du Mileu (Comte Lafon)... $ 185.00 $ 157.25 The medium-bodied flavors possess exemplary mid-palate concentration as the copious dry extract really coats the palate and does a fine job of buffering the phenolically mature tannins that are quite firm but not hard. I very much like the seductive texture. 2022+ (91-94/100) - Allen Meadows, Burghound.com 2012 Chambolle-Musigny (La Pousse d Or)... $ 105.00 $ 89.25 I would advise decanting this if you're going to try a bottle young. The silky-textured and intensely mineral-driven middle weight flavors are utterly delicious before terminating in an impeccably well-balanced and refined finish. There is excellent tension and beautiful delineation to the racy and silky medium-bodied flavors that also exude a fine bead of minerality on the delicious finish that tightens up quickly. This is a very classy wine and if not the most complex among these Puligny 1ers, then perhaps the most refined. 2017+ (92-94/100) - Allen Meadows, Burghound.com 2010 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes (Etienne Sauzet)... $ 190.00 $ 152.00 The seductively textured flavors are not quite as concentrated as those of the Champs Canet but they re even more complex with really lovely purity of expression. There is excellent volume to the explosive, intense and driving finish that is unusually dry, balanced and long. Like its stable mate, this is exceptionally classy and my predicted range obviously assumes that the sulfur will be integrated successfully in time but in this case that should not be a significant risk as this clearly has the material to do so, not to mention very much needing extended cellaring. 2018+ (92-95/100) - Allen Meadows, Burghound.com 2010 Corton-Charlemagne (Dubreuil-Fontaine)... $ 165.00 $ 132.00 A touch of reduction does not materially detract from the elegant, pure and gorgeously complex aromas of green apple, rose petal, green fruit and an almost pungent minerality that also makes quite the impression on the exceptionally rich, intense and overtly powerful flavors. This is a big wine with excellent mid-palate concentration that does not compromise the sense of focus and tension on the explosively long finish.
