PHILLIPS BREWING AND MALTING CO Phillips Brewing and Malting Co, named after its founder Matthew Phillips, is definitely one of Meura s great supporters of the Meura 2001 on the Canadian Craft brewing scene! After several years of working for other brewers, Matt Phillips decided it was time to make beer of his own. But while Matt s beer was incredible, nobody would lend him the money to start the brewery. So he started in a small windowless apartment where Matt would brew beer by day and sleep on the floor by night, with lamps on timers to remind him when to wake up and do it all over again. Phillips first brews were unconventional. In the conservative beer climate of 2001 the brewery launched an Espresso Stout, a Raspberry Wheat Ale, and a boldly-hopped IPA; a suitable foreshadow for the creativity to come. Since then Matt Phillips has moved out of the apartment and entered into a more brewing-appropriate facility. He launched a soda company, a distillery, and most recently a malting facility the only one of its kind in Canada. A real entrepreneur! FIRST MEURA 2001 JUNIOR In 2012, Matt started discussing the integration of a Meura 2001 filter to replace the bottle neck of the existing brewhouse, the lauter tun. Furthermore, the brewery brews several beers at very high density and extract losses with the lauter tun became unacceptable for the growing brewery. In the beginning of 2013 Matt decided to invest in a Meura 2001 Junior filter equipped with 28 chambers to be able to make brews of 40 hl cold wort up to 18 P. The Meura 2001 Junior could help him in increasing its production capacity, extract yield and increasing the quality of its final product. 2

THROW: 11 kg M.E./ch CRAFT JUNIOR: up to 500 kg M.E. SECOND MEURA 2001 JUNIOR But soon the demand got even stronger. The brewery decided to triple the brew-size to 120 hl cold wort up to 18 P, which means a Meura 2001 Junior with 86 chambers. Although not originally foreseen, the front plate, mobile plate, rear caisson, hydraulic group and the 28 chambers of the Meura 2001 Jr delivered in 2013 were reused in the new Meura 2001 filter designed with 86 chambers. Again a major advantage of the Meura 2001 filter that allowed to keep the investment within limits. From time-honoured favourites, to brand new releases and special seasonal one-offs, Phillips Brewing and Malting Co today offers a wide range of high quality beers and Meura is proud to have been part of this great success! Matt s testimonial Following Matt s words, there were three main reasons to go for a Meura 2001: ENVIRONMENTAL this was the starting point of our exploration. We had just completed a lifecycle analysis of our CO 2 footprint, and were shocked by how much malted barley contributed to our greenhouse gas emissions. We were looking for ways to combat this. ECONOMICS this had to do with the cost savings of the raw materials, and also with the fact that we could use it to create high gravity wort streams giving us 50% more brewhouse capacity, and thus deferring a full brewhouse upgrade (until now) AUTOMATION we were looking for ways to create more uniformity between brews, and had identified operator inconsistency in the lauter tun as a concern. Mash press is more easily automated. The main benefits are exactly what we had in mind more efficient use of raw ingredients, more extract, lower CO 2 footprint, clear, consistent wort. 3
India! With a population exceeding 1.2 billion, India is barely producing about 22 million hl beer per year. The annual beer consumption is thus approx. 2 litres per capita whereas for example China is currently approx. 35 litres per capita. It is expected that the Indian beer market will continuously grow the coming decade, mainly attributed to a growing middle class with disposable income. Furthermore, from today up to 2027, the United Nations is expecting 200 million more Indians! Meura, already present in many Indian breweries, keeps on focussing on this promising market. In the year 2006, Meura and Praj Ltd (Pune, India) concluded a partnership that led to a lot of great successes over these years! Today 18 Meura 2001 filters have been sold all over the country. It means that one in every four beers produced in India is passing through a brewhouse equipped with a Meura 2001 filter! India is not only a key market for Meura in the beer brewing industry, but also regarding malt extract production. Renowned grain extract companies like Barmalt, Malt company, Imperial Malt and Jagatjit, etc. are all equipped with the Meura 2001 technology. 4
In 2016, Meura was awarded with two more projects; a Meura 2001 and related technologies for the greenfield of Carlsberg India in Karnataka as well as for the SNJ greenfield project in Andhra Pradesh. In order to improve the support of Indian customers, Meura recently hired Mr Amol Gangele as Area Sales Manager. Amol lives in Pune and worked previously for Praj Ltd and Alfa Laval India. Meura has now a direct contact in the country, which will allow Meura to serve even better its Indian Customers. In addition, Amol will also support the Meura sales team for the surrounding Asian countries. Meura continue developing its presence in India, to better serve the local brewers. We have the intention to be your key partner for the Indian beer market delivering our state-of-the-art technologies and services. We would like to thank all customers for their continued trust and are looking forward to be a partner in a future project! 5
THE MEURA 2001 HYBRID: a success story Do you know that the first mash filter for the beer brewing industry was developed and commercialized by Meura back in 1901? Well, now you know! The mash filter has been at the core of Meura s business for more than 100 years! In 1989 a major revolution in mash filtration came about: the industrial introduction of the so-called Meura 2001 filter. Today, nearly 400 Meura 2001 filters have been sold all over the world and involved in the production of about 25% of the world s beer volume. From the smallest craft brewer to global lager beer producers, the Meura 2001 filter today remains the unequalled state-of-the-art equipment for any brewer. THE MEURA 2001 HYBRID Guided by its innovative spirit, Meura continuously improve the design of the Meura 2001. After almost five years of intensive research, a major innovation was industrialised in 2010, the so-called Meura 2001 Hybrid. 6
Compared to the previous version, the Meura 2001 Hybrid is further reducing the sparge water to grist ratio and is thus producing a higher gravity wort, shorter cycle times and an improved wort quality. The Meura 2001 Hybrid simultaneously delivers the following unique performances: HIGH PRODUCTIVITY ( 14 brews per day) AND HIGH EXTRACT YIELD ( to laboratory yield) AND VERY BRIGHT WORT (Imhoff < 5ml/l) AND HIGH GRAVITY WORT (> 17 P cold wort, without weak wort recovery) Thanks to the improved flow pattern of the Meura 2001 Hybrid it is possible to go up to 17 T malt (or malt equivalent) throw with one single filter. Since its recent introduction in 2010, about 150 Meura 2001 Hybrid filters have been sold already! Again a revolution! MEURA 2001 REVAMPINGS While developing the Hybrid design, Meura took into account the possibility of retrofitting the previous version of the Meura 2001. This allows the current Meura 2001 users to benefit from the new development. Most of our customers experiencing the unique performances of the Meura 2001 Hybrid started a programme to revamp all their previous Meura 2001 filters. These revampings are managed by a dedicated team at Meura Technical & Technological services. Today more than 30 Meura 2001s have been revamped to the Meura 2001 Hybrid. The intervention requires maximum one week of production stop and can thus be easily performed during the yearly brewhouse maintenance overhaul. Pioneer by tradition, Meura has always promoted innovation. Supported by its R&D division, Meura is aiming to modernize the brewing industry by constantly developing new technologies. The Meurabrew (continuous brewhouse), the MeuraStream (steam and water savings), the Aflosjet (mash heat by direct steam) and of course the Meura 2001 Hybrid filter are just a few examples! Being revolutionary is Meura s engine! 7
