A unique wine from a unique vintage PRIVATE BIN RED 2012 RELEASE VAT 94 DRY RED 2012 We explore Australia s long history of premium multi regional and multi varietal blends by revisiting an old favourite not produced by Tyrrell s since the early 90 s. 5 RED STAR WINERY JAMES HALLIDAY S 2013 AUSTRALIAN WINE COMPANION

2012 PRIVATE BIN REDS By M. Bruce Tyrrell, AM 5 RED STAR WINERY JAMES HALLIDAY S 2012 AUSTRALIAN WINE COMPANION Two quality red wines salvaged from a tough vintage Unfortunately we have none of our normal Private Bin reds to release from 2012. Similar to 2008 we had a cool, wet, humid summer leading up to vintage which meant most shiraz in the Hunter Valley did not reach full maturity. We fared much better than some and picked almost all of our own shiraz, much of which has already been drunk under our more commercial labels. However, two wines stood out as being worthy of going into bottle. The best vineyards always come through no matter what the conditions, and from 2012 we did get some remarkably good shiraz just not enough of it to bottle as a varietal wine. So, we looked back into our history of making blended reds for inspiration and decided we should revive an old favourite for the 2012 vintage - the Vat 94 Dry Red. Vat 94 was originally a cabernet shiraz malbec blend produced from a combination of our own fruit, and fruit from the Audrey Wilkinson vineyard. This Vat 94 is a blend of the best Hunter shiraz we got from the old vines on the hill around the winery alongside some absolutely brilliant grenache and malbec from McLaren Vale. CELEBRATING 5,354 TROPHIES AND MEDALS SINCE 1971 The Vat 94 Dry Red 2012 will be wonderful drinking as a young wine but also has the ability to take shorter to medium term cellaring if you are able to keep your hands off it. At this stage, we don t plan to make Vat 94 again in the foreseeable future so make sure you take the opportunity to try it while you can. The parcels of pinot noir from both the Winery Hill and HVD vineyards were neither quite good enough to make Vat 6 in 2012, but a blend of the two has produced a declassified Vat 6 that we have named HVD and The Hill Pinot Noir. This was released in December 2012. It is as good a young drinking pinot noir as you will find and the family actually drank five bottles of it at Christmas dinner. We are also releasing Stevens Shiraz and Brokenback Shiraz from our 2011 vintage. 2011 is now starting to challenge 2009 in terms of real quality Hunter shiraz. The wines have wonderful sweet fruit, soft palates, great length and are both bang on 13% alcohol. If you need some more 2011 Hunter shiraz, I recommend you get some of these two. In addition to the aforementioned reds, we are also offering a unique release of our 2008 Futures Semillon a rare opportunity for those who have never invested in our futures program to see just how good these wines are. The 2008 is the only Futures Semillon not made from the old Signpost Block in the HVD vineyard, as we gambled on it in 2008 and 3 inches of rain in one night meant we lost the fruit. This wine was made from the Pokolbin Hills Estate vineyard, which was planted in the early 1970 s by Reg Drayton and his family. I have always thought it one of the top 10 semillon vineyards in the Hunter and this is the only time we have made these grapes into a standalone wine. The wine is now coming to the first stage of maturity and although it will take more age, it is wonderful drinking now. The vineyard always produces semillon with plenty of flavour and a great acid profile. The 2013 vintage is now just starting to settle down and I could not be happier with it. The semillons are bigger wines; a bit like 2005 and 2007. The chardonnays have incredible quality right across the board and the reds look to be like 2005 and 2007 as well; lots of colour and lots of flavour. As for other news, we have had two real highlights in the last month or so. Firstly, Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine voted us the Best Cellar Door in the Lower Hunter, which is a wonderful accolade for Andrew, Scott and the rest of the team who look after you when you come to the winery. And secondly, the English wine writer, Matthew Jukes, has just released the tenth edition of his 100 Best Australian Wines and this year HVD Semillon 2007 and Vat 9 Shiraz 2010 have been included. We have been a part of this Top 100 in each of the ten years that he has published it. So, despite having no normal Private Bin reds from 2012, we have gone out of our way to ensure there are some interesting options for our customers and two very good 2011 reds as well. I look forward to seeing you at the winery soon, or at one of our various functions around the country later in the year. 2. 2012 PRIVATE BIN RED RELEASE sales.orders@tyrrells.com.au ph: 1800 045 501 fax: 02 4998 7723 3.

VAT 94 DRY RED 2012 STEVENS SHIRAZ 2011 BROKENBACK SHIRAZ 2011 FUTURES SEMILLON 2008 A one off reproduction of a classic Tyrrell s red of yesteryear. Made in honour of some of the great multi varietal, multi regional reds of the mid 1900 s, Vat 94 has not been produced at Tyrrell s since the early 90 s. The 2012 is a blend of shiraz from some of our top Hunter Valley vineyards such as the Short Flat, along with grenache and malbec coming from old vines in McLaren Vale. The shiraz and grenache were matured separately in older 2250L French oak casks whilst the malbec was matured in three year old 500L French oak puncheons before the three components were blended and bottled in May 2013. A wine based on balance and drinkability, whilst showing what can be achieved with the skilled art of blending. It has a very inviting and seductive nose and the palate is full of sweet fruit with a soft tannin profile. 13.0% alc/vol A modern take on the classic Hunter shiraz style. A fine example of what will be remembered as a great vintage for Hunter Valley shiraz. This wine is sourced from Neil Stevens Old Hillside property on Marrowbone Rd which has very different soils to the red volcanic clays at the Tyrrell s property. After undergoing fermentation in open topped concrete vats, the wine was matured in a mixture of newer 2800L French oak casks with a small percentage of the blend being matured in 225L French oak barriques. The colour is a vivid purple and it offers a wonderfully fragrant nose of dark berry fruits and lifted French oak. A palate of black cherry, raspberry and fresh spicy flavours combined with bright acidity make this wine a wonderful example of the modern, balanced style of Hunter Valley shiraz. 13.0% alc/vol Notes: The baby brother of our flagship Vat 9. This is Hunter Valley Shiraz 101. Made from a blend of some of the younger vineyards on the Ashman s property as well as a few other high end vineyard sites from around Pokolbin. It is only ever matured in older French oak casks, which have generally been used previously for Vat 9 and Stevens Shiraz. The 2011 has a bright purple hue with medium density. The palate is also medium bodied, with a bright red fruit profile that is given added length by the fine acid structure. A wine that s all about balance and celebrates the unique qualities of Hunter Valley shiraz, it can be enjoyed on any occasion and should handle ageing quite well. 13.0% alc/vol Notes: A rare opportunity to taste the rewards of our Wine Futures program. Due to vintage conditions we decided that the HVD Signpost Block was not good enough to use for the Futures Semillon in 2008. Instead, we used the Pokolbin Hills Estate vineyard, which has always been one of our strongest blocks. The wine is light to medium colour though it still has a vibrant green hue. The nose is showing lifted intense citrus notes with just a hint of toasty bottle age development, though still incredibly youthful given its age. The palate is still tight, lean and focused and only just beginning to flesh out. The tight core of citrus fruits and long, fine acid structure give this wine impeccable length. 10.0% alc/vol Notes: Notes: 4. 2012 PRIVATE BIN RED RELEASE sales.orders@tyrrells.com.au ph: 1800 045 501 fax: 02 4998 7723 5.
