Function Room Separate to our restaurant we have a function room for hire. The room is light and elegant mirroring the restaurants comfortable atmosphere. The neutral décor provides a blank canvas for any decorations or colour themes required. Fishing Fishing is available at The Family Tree on the River Derwent. Permits can be purchased from the restaurant. Recent catches include Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Barble and Grayling. Must have a rod licence to fish. Takeaway food and drink is available or take advantage of our delivery service, just pop in or call to place your order. Accommodation The Family Tree has two luxury bed and breakfast rooms in our separate annex building: The Sycamore room is king-size and The Oak room is our family room (with king-size bed and double sofa bed). Both have been lovingly restored and decorated to create a warm and welcoming feel. The Oak Room Along with our little personal touches we hope you will enjoy staying with us and will want to return again and again.

ACCOMMODATION To complete your stay at The Family Tree, breakfast is served in our restaurant from 9am. To start we offer you a choice of hot drink and our breakfast tray which includes fruit juice, cereals, Greek yogurt, fresh fruit, warm croissant, Danish pastry and toast served with preserves. This is followed by a choice of any hot food from our breakfast menu.

The History of Whatstandwell and The Family Tree According to various sources, the village of Whatstandwell dates back to the end of the 14th Century. Originally the River Derwent was crossed here via a Ford until the bridge was built in 1391. It is believed that the bridge was named Watstonewell s bridge, after a man called Walter (Wat) Stonewell rented a cottage near by. The area around the bridge then became known as Whatstandwell and consisted of just the station, a cluster of houses, the bridge and the pub formally called The Bulls Head, in which you are now sitting. Today Whatstandwell is known for other reasons, one being, is that they say the four main modes of travel; road, rail, canal and river, all run closer together here than anywhere else in the country. Florence Nightingale is also associated with Whatstandwell as she used to get off of the train at the old Whatstandwell Bridge station on her way home to Holloway. The old station was located just to the rear of our property. Ellen McArthur, the record breaking yachtswomen was also born and grew up here. The Bulls Head was an old Coaching Inn, where horse-drawn coaches would rest before their long trek up the hills out of the valley. There is still a trough at the rear of our kitchen and steps to the front of the building where the riders used to mount their horses. At some stage The Bulls Head became the Derwent Hotel, which in the past has also been called The Derwent Arms and The Derwent. When we bought the property, we decided as a family that we wanted to open it as a Coffee Lounge & Tea Rooms, and as it was a new family venture we decided to rename it: THE FAMILY TREE We would like to thank you for your custom & hope to welcome you again soon.
