His wines receive rave reviews from all the leading wine journalists and yet the domaine remains very much a small family concern, run by Stéphane but with his mother and father, though both fully retired, still very much present in the background. Robert Parker described the 2011s here as being some of the finest 2011s I tasted in the Northern Rhône. A team of between 20 and 25 pickers began harvesting on 4 th September, and finished on 10 th October. The results are a fabulous set of wines from a winemaker whose ambition for outstanding quality is clearly unstoppable.
Red Wines Per Case In Bond 2011 Le Temps Est Venu, 78.00 Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu Stéphane has bought a parcel of 40 year old vines in this southern Rhône, mainly Grenache, but with a small proportion of Syrah. Lovely sweet, ripe, peppery fruit scents. Good depth and balance on the palate, with soft fruit, silky tannins and excellent freshness on the finish. Drink 2013-2016. Availability: 20 cases 2011 Syrah La Rosine, 144.00 The wine includes a proportion of young vine Côte Rôtie. Deep, savoury fruit nose. Super freshness, ripe dark fruit, lovely purity and minerality. Excellent depth on finish, very long and pure. Drink 2014-2017. Insiders and shrewd consumers have long realized that the 30,000-bottle Syrah La Rosine Vin de Pays cuvee is a great bargain. The 2011 is a 100% Syrah from the steep hillsides north of the old Roman town of Vienne, a few miles up river from Cote Rotie. The soils are largely decomposed granite. The 2011 La Rosine is a serious Syrah displaying lots of tapenade, blackberry, charcoal and fruit. This beautifully made wine sells at a remarkably fair price as it resembles a Cote Rotie from the Cote Brune. 90-92 Robert Parker Availability: 15 cases 2011 Syrah L Ame Soeur, 276.00 Vin de Pays des Coteaux Seyssuel Bursting with fruit of real charm. This is textured, seductive and pure, with a lovely, fruit dominated finish. Drink 2014-2020. Even more striking is the 2011 Syrah l Ame Soeur Vin de Pays, which comes from micro-schist soils near the village of Seyssuel. A dead-ringer for a Cote Blonde Cote Rotie, this cuvee may be the greatest vin de pays I have ever tasted. The entire area, which should receive appellation status sometime in the future, is a total of 75 acres of vines owned by 13 different proprietors. Interestingly, in the mid-1800s, before phylloxera destroyed most French vineyards, there were over 250 acres of vines in this region. The 2011 l Ame Soeur is a small, 8,000-bottle, 100% destemmed cuvee that smells like the great La Mouline from Guigal. Gorgeously fruity and rich with lots of exotic fruits, a huge perfume, and amazing texture as well as length, this is a quintessential example of an over-achieving wine. 91-93 Robert Parker Availability: 5 cases 2
Per Case In Bond 2011 St Joseph 150.00 Stunning minty fruit aromas. Balanced and extremely fine on the palate, with gorgeous supple tannins, and great persistence. Drink 2014-2019. Another 2011 that stands out is the 2011 St.-Joseph, a work-in-progress that gets better with each vintage. From St.-Joseph vineyards situated adjacent to the Condrieu border, this elegant wine (first made in 2008) spends 12-14 months in small barrels of which 20% are new. Smoky bacon fat, strawberry, framboise and black raspberry notes are found in this medium-bodied, Burgundian-styled, seductive St.-Joseph. It should drink well for 5-8 years. 90-92 Robert Parker Availability: 5 cases 2011 Côte Rôtie 420.00 Made up of fruit from several vineyard sites, this has the most incredible complexity. The fruit carries savoury overtones, the tannins are supple and integrated, and the mineral complexity is brilliant. Drink 2015-2022. The 2011 Cote Rotie Classique, which included 20-30% stems in the fermentation, exhibits an opaque purple color along with a big, sweet bouquet of roasted meats, lard, graphite, cassis, black raspberries and a hint of black olives. Medium to full-bodied with terrific fruit purity, texture and length, this velvety 2011 should drink beautifully for the next 10-12 years. 91-93 Robert Parker Availability: 12 cases Also available: 2010 Syrah La Rosine, 144.00 The 2010 Syrah La Rosine Vin de Pays (again 100% Syrah) is a beauty. Lots of exotic Asian spices intermixed with spicy cassis aromas jump from the glass of this medium to full-bodied, rich, fleshy, attractive Syrah. Better than many more expensive Cote Roties made by other producers, it is a testament to the brilliance of Stephane Ogier and his meticulous viticulture and winemaking. 90 Robert Parker Availability: 1 case 3
Per Case In Bond 2008 Côte Rôtie 231.00 Only one Cote Rotie was produced in 2008. The 2008 Cote Rotie, which represents one-third of the estate s normal production, was 100% destemmed and given a light maceration to try and produce an elegant wine (a goal they successfully achieved). Notes of sweet black cherries, raspberries, currants, spice box, roasted herbs and loamy soil result in an endearing, elegant, easy to drink red that should be consumed over the next several years. 87 Robert Parker Drink 2012-2020. Availability: 4 cases 2005 Côte Rôtie 294.00 The 2005 Cote Rotie needs 5-6 years of bottle age to shed some tannins, as this is a tannic, powerful wine, with a deep ruby/purple color, notes of framboise, some oak, underbrush/forest floor, monster tannins, medium body, but plenty of concentration. It possesses enough power and extraction to stand up to the wine s structure. 90+ Robert Parker. Drink 2011-2020. Availability: 1 case White Wines 2011 Viognier de Rosine, 144.00 Lovely fresh crisp fruit, real depth and intensity. Wonderful fleshy character. Delicious. Drink 2013-2016. The 2011 Viognier de Rosine was aged in a combination of barrel and foudre and went through partial malolactic fermentation. Elegant white peach and apricot notes intermixed with honeysuckle jump from the glass of this mediumbodied, crisp, fresh, lively white. It is a dead-ringer for a fine Condrieu. 91 Robert Parker Availability: 3 cases 4
Per Case In Bond 2011 Condrieu La Combe de Malleval 255.00 Take the Viognier Rosine and turn the volume up to 10! The fruit explodes on the palate in an amazing combination of fruit intensity and freshness. This is superb wine. Stephane Ogier considers this his finest Condrieu to date. Drink 2014-2018. Even better is the 2011 Condrieu La Combe de Malleval. Full-bodied, opulent and rich with unmistakable minerality, it reveals notes of lychee nuts, peaches, honeysuckle and crushed rocks. Drink this luscious white over the next 2-4 years. 93 Robert Parker Availability: 5 cases 2011 Condrieu Les Vieilles Vignes Per 6 bottles 195.00 de Jacques Vernay Only about 300 cases of 6 of this staggeringly rich, intense and complex Condrieu were produced. A wine of the most exceptional quality. Drink 2014-2020. The brilliant 2011 Condrieu Les Vieilles Vignes de Jacques Vernay comes from a parcel of vines planted in 1948. It is a profound, barrel and foudre-aged, exceptionally rich, honeyed Condrieu revealing notes of orange marmalade, tangerine oil, white peach, honeysuckle, mango and exotic Asian fruits. This stunning, full-bodied, deep 2011 is an amazing effort to enjoy over the next 4-5 years. 96 Robert Parker Availability: 2 cases Also available: 2009 Viognier de Rosine, 138.00 Floral aromas and delicious apricot fruit flavours. Stunning. Drink 2011-2015. Availability: 2 cases & 6 bottles 2008 Viognier de Rosine, 129.00 Fabulous floral aromas typical of Viognier. Stunning complexity on the palate, with really long-lasting flavours. Absolutely superb. Drink 2010-2014. Availability: 1 case & 9 bottles 5
