FEBRUARY 2013 THE NEW MEDIA ALTERNATIVE WWW.PAARLNUUS.CO.ZA FREE GRATIS 6 Paarl 8 Incorrect 11 Architecture Media The Rhodesian Ridgeback Cattle Baron Paarl now boasting own steakhouse of note! Mark Hurter 13 PMS - A man's perspective! also the one in Camps Bay. He knows what he is talking about when he says meat cutting is an art. The way we mature our meat and the way we turn it, all impacts on the final product. Don t forget however that we are as well-known for our chicken and fish dishes as for our meats. Did you know that we only purchase in East Coast Sole, as the texture is preferred - it s firm and not floppy as the West Coast Sole? With space to seat 140 people inside and a further 80 outside the venue is an excellent proposition as a function venue. There is also a private space of about 25 seats available that can be booked for presentations or small celebrations. Franco also wants the people of Paarl to know there are daily In-Store Promotions, all that the public have to do is to call and he will gladly tell them what special is on the menu for that specific day. Paarl can once again boast with having an authentic steakhouse in town as the well-known steakhouse brand - Cattle Baron - opened its doors for business in November 2012. Situated adjacent to The Pontac Manor one does not have to walk far to enjoy the best Chateaubriand steak in town, and the all-enveloping ambiance ensures a warm reception. This, being Cattle Baron s signature dish since this restaurant groups inception in 1987, it remains the most popular item on the menu, 26 years later. According to Mr. Ronnie Dick, CEO of the Cattle Baron Group and founding member the secret in all the dishes that Cattle Baron offers are the way the meat is prepared before-hand as well as the way it is cut. He explains the company spirit as follows: The secret of our success is our passion. We understand the restaurant business and we give the client what he/she expects. Excellent wholesome food, definite value for money and all served in a beautiful setting. We have 17 restaurants countrywide and counting. It s been tough, but we did it and will be continuing with our winning recipe. The interior of the restaurant is tastefully decorated and owner Franco Adams together with Ronnie had a big hand in deciding the look and over-all finish of the restaurant. In fact, Franco has been associated with Ronnie for the past 14 years, having worked as a trained chef in several Cattle Barons, Be it BURGER NIGHT on Mondays, business lunches, pensioners discount, or just popping in to sit in a quiet corner with your laptop to utilize wi-fi and enjoy a freshly brewed coffee, Cattle Baron Paarl caters not only for families but for the executive diner too and it s also a perfect dining destination for romantic couples. Ask Franco about the Chef s Table, a special raised table seating 12 with a dedicated waiter and own chef, perfect for a special occasion and to treat friends or colleagues. Better yet, go and have a look for yourself... Welcome back Cattle Baron!

4 FEBRUARY 2013 S p e c i a l VALENTINES EVENING on the 14th of Februarie 2013 BELLYDANCING! R99 Buffet 3 course meal, excellent value! SPECIAL PROMOTION Moksh Restaurant The taste that lingers. Mark Hurter. It has been 3 months since Moksh Restaurant opened its doors to the public and according to owner Sunil the response has been overwhelming and veddy veddy positive! Moksh Restaurant has become synonymous with fantastic value for money in that it only uses the best imported Indian spices in all its dishes, the portions are generous and well-priced. As a frequent customer splurging on Moksh take-aways on Wednesday nights I can assure you the Butter Chicken and Dahl Makani still tastes as delicious as the first time I had some 3 months ago. I had a lot to learn and still do about genuine North-Indian cuisine but am more than happy to go down the menu and be delightfully surprised each time I try something new. I have now progressed to the Chicken Korma which is a chicken dish prepared in cubes of cream, always accompanied by a big helping of Basmati rice. One should of course take one or two Garlic Naan (sort of a flat fried dough bread ) with which one scoops up the sauces, the correct way of eating is actually with your bare hands! Every occasion turns into something special, and thankfully most of the dishes are also available as Mild, you don t have to worry about burning your taste buds, although if you like that kind of thing the chef will be happy to oblige! Well done Sunil and staff for bringing the orient to our doorstep. Another ATM robbery in Main Street, this one during the 2012 December holiday. Questions to Capt. Du Plessis of Paarl SAPS. 1) How many break-ins was reported in Paarl in areas Courtrai, Paarl Central and Northern Paarl over December and how does it correspond to last year s figure. COURTRAI 2012 : Occurred in Richelieu and Laborie Street 2011: No burglaries reported during December PAARL CENTRAL 2012: Occurred in Fabriek, Synagogue (2), Lady Grey, Castle, De Villiers, Pastorie Avenue, Thom and Du Toits Streets 2011: Occurred in Fabriek, Waterkant and Lady Grey NORTHERN PAARL: 2012: Cheve, La Mode, Meul, Nantes, Lemoenkloof (2), Citrus, Protea, Timberon, Non Parelle, Durr, Retief (2), Teleki Crescent, Russel 2011: Blake, Meul, Malan, Boom, Pieter Wuim, Hendrika, St. Francis Avenue, Bergpypie, Stirling, Kweek, Koning, Grawe, Moederkapie, Keurtjie Street. 2) Does the police have any leads in catching the criminals and what is being done to bring these criminals to justice. The Paarl SAPS makes use of forensic as well as detective investigation into all burglaries reported. In the event of fingerprints obtained showing a positive hit, the detective is tasked with tracing the suspects via tracing operations. Once they are arrested and criminally charged, the Criminal Justice system follows as they are sent to court. An example of good work occurred when a suspect was linked to eleven burglaries in the Paarl area and was found guilty of nine of these counts. He received a convicted sentence of ten years imprisonment. He was linked via fingerprints and descriptions of residents who came face to face with the perpetrator. 3) Do we know the origin of the criminals? The most suspects arrested are from the Paarl East area and we have an increasing amount of suspects entering from the Cape Town areas. 4) What measures do the police put in place before a December holiday where a lot of Paarl inhabitants are not at home and what can inhabitants expect to be done by the SAPS for the December 2013 holiday to stop this from happening again. The Paarl SAPS informs all sub-forum members (Each sector has a sub-forum meetings occur once a month where crime is discussed) of operations to be held as well as possible crime areas which are being targeted. During December media is used to reach most persons to inform them of operations that will be held as well as how to safeguard premises etc. Extra staff (reservists, assistance from other policing sections) are also deployed during this period. 5) Any advice from the SAPS to Paarl people leaving their homes unattended for long periods of time over December? Paarl SAPS requests that all members of the public take responsibility for their own premises. There are many ways of ensuring this: By asking your neighbour to look after your residence by removing mail, ensuring that the fence is intact, walking around the premises or even leaving your keys with them. By completing the vacant house register at the local police station. This register is inspected daily and visits to premises are also recorded daily. Members of the public have the right to see the register and ask who visited the premises Members of the public are also urged to join their local Neighbourhood Watches in the various sectors.

6 FEBRUARY 2013 HERITAGE Paarl Cape Dutch to Art Deco and everything in-between! Author - Bronwyn Boyd - Sotheby's Paarl bronwyn@sirpaarl.co.za Paarl is a place of great character and beauty. We are proud of Paarl for various reasons such as Paarl Mountain with its granite outcrops which is the world s second largest granite monolith and of great geological significance, the natural beauty of the valley, the Afrikaanse Taal monument and of our Main Road which is said to be the longest in the country (11km) with the most exceptional and complete architectural chronology. The town is also renowned for its schools, the Berg River canoe marathon, the wine and fruit industry and its people. Paarl is a treasure trove of architecture, both historic and modern. Many factors contribute to the special character of this town. The long and rich history, the organic development of our town coupled with the presence of exceptional residents who have contributed to the architecture and who have fiercely guarded our existing older built heritage. Paarl is the third oldest colonial settlement in South Africa. The first farms in the area then known as Drakenstein, was allocated to Dutch and French settlers in the 17th century. Paarl hamlet was born in the early 1700 s after the completion of the mill (after which Mill street was named and which still serves as a reminder) and first church. Wedged between the Paarl Mountain and the Bergriver, the town developed to its own rhythm with the Mill and Church the centre of its activities. Initially the settlement was loosely spread out along the wagon-road. It was called Paarl from the beginning. The term Drakenstein was used for the entire district as well as the church congregation. Due to the absence of a clear well planned street grid layout, many land grants were made right in the middle of what later became the CBD and built-up areas of Paarl. This is the reason for surviving examples of old farmsteads within the town. By 1780 there were roughly 30 houses in town, by 1813 a 100 and by 1839 it was large enough to be considered a magisterial district. The municipality came into existence in 1840. Paarl is home to many architectural styles. Some barely left a mark while others can still be seen to this day - and some you may wish to have remained far away. We will focus on the defining characteristics of the more prominent styles and variations thereof in Paarl. Cape Dutch and Vernacular Georgian and Victorian Art Deco and Arts and Crafts The various styles and unique interpretation thereof can be linked to the availability and locality of building materials such as thatch, clay, lime, stone etc. Granite was locally obtained and was used in a variety of ways in different architectural styles. The affluence or hardship experienced in a specific period is further reflected in architecture throughout Paarl. The saying, n boer maak n plan is quite appropriate in certain instances. CAPE DUTCH AND CAPE VERNACULAR ARCHITEC- TURE 1700 s-1800 s Cape Dutch Cape Dutch architecture was born in South Africa and the first to arrive in Paarl. Only the affluent could afford to employ Dutch architects and as a result, this style was copied by local builders and craftsmen. GEORGIAN AND VICTORIAN ARCHITECTURE 1800 s -1900 s Georgian Georgian Victorian With the development of the railway system and increased affluence, the latest craze in architecture arrived in Paarl. In a time when one could order an almost completed home via catalogue, Georgian and Victorian architecture knocked on Paarl s door. Corrugated iron roof sheets and cast iron railings were imported and the masculine Cape Dutch character received a feminine touch. The terminology refers to the period in which the style began to develop and styles often overlapped. Various Cape Dutch and Cape vernacular homes were victorianised at this time. Cast iron sheeting replaced thatch roofs and patterned ceilings covered wooden beams. The hallway was born. Verandahs were also added to houses and gardens reflected the Victorians obsession with far away places with the inclusion of exotic plants and trees such as palm trees, japonicas, roses, ferns, frangipani etc. THE 1900 S, ART DECO, NEO CAPE AND ARCHI- TECTS OF THIS CENTURY Art Deco With the turn of the century came changes in architecture. New forms such as, Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, Art Deco, New Renaissance, Neo Cape Dutch and Barbarism. Although examples of Art Nouveau, is limited, there are exceptional Art Deco Buildings, known for its geometric designed and stylised forms in Paarl. One very good example of the Art Deco Style is the Protea Cinema Building (today the AGS church in Main Road). Although architecture in the first half of the century was quite subdued, exceptional contributions were made by gifted architects. From Wynand Louw we inherited examples of the Cape revival style and Arts and Crafts architecture. Pius Pahl, exponent of the International Style and member of the Bauhaus designed a couple of timeless residences in Paarl. Architects helped create the modern landscape as we see it today and homage will be paid to modern architects in a later issue. Architecture is a reflection of us and our creativity. It bears testimony to hardship suffered and affluence enjoyed. It bears witness to our personal style, eccentricities and the presiding fashions. When we leave, our home remains to offer future generations a glimpse of who we were. This is what creates a sense of place in Paarl. In later issues we will explore the different architectural styles in Paarl in greater detail. We will focus on the development of architecture through the church, schools and farms in Paarl. 8 FEBRUARY 2013 Incorrect Media Planning is costly! Tinyiko Maswanganyi Successful advertising depends on several aspects. Among them are appealing creative concepts, proper execution, and delivery. If one part of the chain is broken, the advertising will lose its effectiveness and money is wasted. The point I want to emphasise is the delivery of the message. This part is called media planning and buying. The message is wasted when the people who are supposed to hear it do not get hear it. This is often the result of bad media planning. What is media planning? In simple terms, media planning and buying is a usage of the exact media vehicle to communicate advertising messages with the target market. I have observed media platforms in the recent months with apparent media planning flaws. It made me wonder if the planning and buying were done with strict consideration of the target audience or is it impulsive "hit and miss" guesswork? In order for the planners and organisations that do self - media planning to apply the budget efficiently they need to appreciate that efficiency is not low cost; rather it is effectiveness married to price and the results they need. They need to understand who will be reached by their advert and what is the likelihood of success and elasticity. By buying in the incorrect media platforms, the planners and buyers are pushing the results to the horizons. Nothing will be visible. At the end of the day it is failure that results. Use the right medium: MEDIA A while ago I sat for a brief with a marketing manager of a brand that has Italian origins and high sales among the lower market. He lamented that the sales were "shocking". We asked about the medium of message dispatch, and he mentioned high-end magazines and we immediately noticed that the problem is with his media planning "prowess", which missed the target and potential market so evidently. He asked me what we needed to do. I said we needed to diagnose the problem properly but from what I could see the usage of media is profoundly incorrect! We needed to change it in order to see the results. We evaluated the history of the brand in South Africa, the current sales, their brand presence and other aspects; we established that the market that they are trying to reach or supposed to target was not receiving the message. They, the potential consumers in that target market, were not aware of the new products the company was selling. Culprit: wrong media! Understand the demographics - and then use them... properly, of course: Other than that incorrect media planning is a waste of advertising budget directly, there is a lot more than this. This includes missed indirect revenue as a result of not communicating with the correct target market. The consumers need to know about the new products and services in order to react to them. If they do not, your brand is likely not to be taken seriously and will be forgotten in the long run. The results are always low sales and competitors taking over. Those who will survive are those who understand that they need external expertise from a specialised team that understands the field. Those are the ones who take time to evaluate the market, which buys their product and are likely to react to the advertising messages. The company media planners must understand the demographics across the board. They need to understand the media audience and the sufficient reach of media platforms. Planners need to understand the uniqueness of the different markets. In a nutshell, for media planning not to result in a waste of money, you should consider the following basic principles: Who do you want to talk to? Where are they to be found? Which media do they consume? How many are you likely to reach? How often, etc? When doing the planning you need to understand the background of the brand, what makes the brand relevant to the target market, the association with certain activities and what sort of people participate in those activities. You also need to know where you appeal the most, what are the specific drives to associate with the target market and the brand, what is the single culture that the brand utilises to align themselves with the target market. Media planning has to ensure that the target market is reminded of the service and products, and the only way this can happen and fulfil the mandate is when media planning is done correctly and properly and gets the message across to its intended target audience. PAWS 11 FEBRUARY 2013 The Rhodesian Ridgeback Africa s Own. by Mark Hurter Country of origin: Rhodesia/Southern Rhodesia (Now Zimbabwe) Type: Dog (Canis lupus familiaris) The Rhodesian Ridgeback (RR) is one of only two registered breeds indigenous to Southern Africa. Its ancestors can be traced to the Cape in South Africa where they were bred with the early pioneer's dogs and the semi-domesticated dog of the indigenous people. The first white men to see ridged dogs were the Portugese, who landed at what is today, Cape Town, South Africa in 1487. The Boers later called the indigenous people Hottentots, although they referred to themselves as "Khoi-Khoi". The Boers used many of the breeds they brought with them to crossbreed with the Khoi dogs, or Hottentots Hunting Dogs, as they required a dog resistant to local diseases and more suitable to frontier life. In 1879 Reverend Charles Daniel Helm brought two dogs from Kimberley to his mission near, what is Bulawayo in the south-west of Rhodesia, now known as Zimbabwe. These two bitches are regarded as the origin of what is known today as the Rhodesian Ridgeback, although there is no proof that they did indeed possess a ridge. A hunter, by the name of Cornelius van Rooyen, operated mainly in Matebeleland, mated these two rough coated, grey-black dogs to his pack and the famous ridge emerged. clean shot. Only the very fittest and most skilful lived to pass on their qualities to the next generation. The most common misconception about Rhodesian Ridgebacks is that they actually kill lions. Nothing could be further from the truth. No dog, no matter how courageous, can kill a lion. A distict "type" of South African frontier dog began to become more common. Individuals varied greatly but they were generally medium-sized animals of the hound type, tan or brindled in colour, fast and sturdy. The standard was based heavily on the Dalmatian Standard which was presented to the Kennel Union of Southern Africa (KUSA) in 1922 and after revision, was accepted in 1926. Francis Barnes from the Eskdale Kennel is credited with being the principal creator of the Breed Standard. In 1924, the first two Rhodesian Ridgebacks were registered with the Kennel Union of Southern Africa (KUSA). Mr L. Herring of Grootedam, South Africa, owned these two dogs. In the same year several kennel names were established by the breeders around Bulawayo, Umvukwe, Marandellas, Eskdale, Drumbuck and Avondale. By the end of 1928, there were 13 registered kennel names. The kennels that contributed the most registered dogs to the foundation of the Rhodesian Ridgeback were Eskdale, Viking, Drumbuck, Avondale and Lion's Den. All these names will be found behind the dogs of today. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is steadily increasing in popularity, in Great Britain, the USA, Spain and other continental countries as well as in Australia and New Zealand. Today there are few lion left to hunt and modern aids make the job much easier. However, far from being redundant, the Ridgeback has once again exhibited its adaptability and versatility by becoming sought-after companion/house dogs, family pets and watchdogs world-wide. Its character and temperament are dignified, intelligent with an independent mind they can evaluate a situation and act accordingly without instructions. Though naturally obedient and easily trained, you will never get that instant submission you see in Working Breeds. Ridgebacks are partners not servants!! A sense of humour, aloof and stand-offish with strangers, but showing no aggression or shyness unfamiliar visitors are tolerated at best after proper introduction. A Ridgeback is a creature of grace and dignity, loyal to the end. Cornelius van Rooyen crossed the following breeds with the Hottentot Hunting Dog. The Bloodhound/Pointer (having a good nose), the Greyhound (having speed), the Bulldog/Bullterrier (having courage and tenacity), the Airdale and Irish Terrier (having dash and spirit) and certainly the elegant Deer-/staghound (having stamina). The dog's usefulness far outweighed its looks or adherence to any particular type, but it was noticed that the ridge of the Hottentot dog manifested itself in many of the offspring of matings between local and European dogs. As a dominant gene, it recurred generation by generation. The liver or brown nose in the modern Rhodesian Ridgeback is related to the nose of a similar colour in the Pointers that were used and the problem of a wavy or kinky tail to the Bulldog ancestry. These lionhounds would hunt ordinary game silently, picking up the scent and following it until the quarry came into sight. When the hunter drew near the stalk would begin. Hunting mainly in groups of two or three, it was a case of attack, feint, dodge, worry, snap and retreat, but above all confine the beast, allowing the hunter to get into position for a good, During World War II, the Rhodesian Ridgeback declined in popularity and almost ceased to exist. Around 1960, Mrs MyldaArsenis, with the help of Mrs Irene Kingcombe set upon the task of reviving the breed in Southern Africa. The dogs to the North of Zimbabwe are larger whereas those in central Zimbabwe are smaller and closer to the desirable height and weight required by the Breed Standard. In South Africa the breed is slightly larger but not as big as in the North. This lovely stamp was issued by the Republic of South Africa in 1991. Most dog stamps are issued as part of a set that usually includes several breeds. This stamp, however stands on its own and it is deserving of such a position. The artist, Alan Ainslie was creative in designing an attractive setting, while highlighting the unique beauty of the Rhodesian Ridgeback.

ME - TIME 13 FEBRUARY 2013 PMS: Woman s Plight, Husband s Fright! Mark Hurter Much has been said, written, researched and explained as far as Pre-Menstrual Syndrome or better known as PMS is concerned. Yet one does not ind a lot of literature on the topic seen from a man s perspective, it is generally accepted that it s just one of those things, PMS is nature s calling card, a forewarning of what is to come, those in the immediate vicinity buckle up, grin and bear it! Now, in the process of writing this article I had the chance to talk to many men on the topic, although no secret meetings were held thanks to Social Media one can reach quite a good number of people in a record number of time. One reply I received compared PMS to watching CNN warning Americans of approaching Hurricane Katrina only the warning is two days late and she has already arrived! Another poor fellow said he wish he could turn into Ernest Hemingway once a month for a few days and go camp in the wild, partaking in hunting bear, lion, wounded buffalo and other harmless and safe activities. Yet another said it so strangely happened that almost to the day each month he suddenly found he had enormous loads of work piling up at the of ice and for a few days just had to works hours and hours overtime! So what is it that makes grown men quiver, making them want to run for the hills, willing to live in a cave and eating wild berries till a white lag beckons them home again from the top of their house in the far, far distance. According to WebMD (thank goodness for the internet and Google) PMS is described as follows: Premenstrual symptoms are a natural part of the menstrual cycle, affecting most women at some time during their lives. If your body doesn't react strongly to its monthly hormonal changes, you probably have mild premenstrual symptoms or none at all. But if you have one or more mild to moderate premenstrual symptoms that disrupt your work, relationships with others, or sense of well-being, you are said to have premenstrual syndrome (PMS). PMS symptoms vary greatly from woman to woman and cycle to cycle, and they can range from mild to severe. Some women note that their symptoms are worse during times of increased emotional or physical stress. Of the more than 150 symptoms (oh man) that have been linked to PMS, the most common are listed below: Breast swelling and tenderness, bloating, water retention, weight gain, changes in bowel habits, acne, food cravings, especially for sweet or salty foods, sleep pattern changes, fatigue, lack of energy, decreased sexual desire, pain. Common complaints include headaches or migraines, aching muscles and joints, or cramps and low back pain prior to menstrual bleeding. Behavioural symptoms include: Aggression and withdrawal from family and friends. So now I ask you, as sole and self-appointed representative of the men in Mankind, what are we to do? Could the ladies out there just for a moment imagine us men as having PMS, 110 kg of hairy chest complaining about sore boobs, changing bowel movements, one moment crying after seeing Bambi hit by a truck the next moment threatening to burn the neighbour s house down because his music is too loud and its already 21h00 on a weekday night? Nonetheless, all is not lost. We adore you as you are, and if PMS is part of the package we accept it as we accept you re the mother of our children and the one that buys lowers for the house. According to health professionals there is also natural remedies that might lessen the symptoms, such as supplements (Vit E and fatty acids) in the form of a daily multivitamin and ish-oil capsule. Also a calcium-rich diet (such as leafy greens, almonds and yoghurt) will relieve many symptoms. Acupuncture is believed to help blood circulation and has also been found to help immensely. Don t disregard mild forms of exercising as it releases pain-busting endorphins and also triggers dopamine. Hip and back stretches have been found to be the most effective. DIY self-massage sounds wild but that together with the use of essential oils have been found to alleviate symptoms even further. So please, if us men suddenly get busy in the garage, or go for a long ride on the motorbike, if we start cleaning the ishing gear and spend hours by ourselves next to a slow moving river, let us be, just remember, as in your case this too shall pass, nature is good and great, the mother of all. Daar was bitter min foutwyne. Marius Labuschagne Tel 021-975 81 66 of mlab@iafrica.com.
