1 HHC DHADING EYE CAMP REPORT Northern Villages of Dhading District DATE: 12-20 TH NOV. 2016 SITE: SERTUNG VDC, WARD 2 (BORANG), DHADING DISTRICT, CENTRAL NEPAL Introduction: Himalayan HealthCare, Nepal has conducted over 70 medical camps in northern Dhading villages of Tipling, Sertung and Lapa villages since 1992. These villages are two to three days walk from the nearest road and one of the toughest places to work in Nepal. In 2015, five emergency medical camps were conducted during the quake devastation even though HHC was forced to cancel two regular medical treks due to unforeseen challenges. HHC carried out an eye camp in 1994 in Tipling village where 40 cataract surgeries were done and over 800 eye patients received care. Since then no eye camp has been conducted in these far corners of Dhading. Therefore HHC decided to include an eye surgery camp in the fall 2016 HHC medical trek. The trek was cancelled but the eye camp was confirmed. Camp Strategy: Organizing an eye camp in a region where only a handful of phones are available and walking is the only way to get around, is very challenging. Over 50 local volunteers carried out a door to door survey to identify eye patients. Many of the cataract patients by default are elderly and many of them physically challenged therefore the bigger challenge was to physically get them to Borang.

2 Many would have to be carried for a day or more. Over 200 cataract patients were identified and helped to Borang by HHC village supervisors and volunteers. Borang was selected because it is central point for four targeted villages of Tipling, Sertung, Lapa and Jharlang. Team: Doctor team Dr. Kamal Khadka (Senior Ophthalmologist) Dr. Arpan Silwal (Medical officer) Mr. Shyam Shrestha (Ophthalmic officer) Mis. Kristina KC (OR nurse) Miss. They look forward to similar camps in the future. Feedback from community: Patients and family were very thankful as financial and physical probles did not allow most of them to visit hospitals in centers like Kathmandu man days away. The six bilaterally blind were the most grateful as the surgery suddenly transformed their lives. Challenges/difficulties: People were afraid of surgery due to myths about eye surgery and convincing many was challenging. The logistics in northern Dhading is always challenging but HHC s experience of over twenty years helped ease the eye team s nervousness. Recommendation: Prior screening of cataract patients by ophthalmologist would be very helpful. Town would be preferred for logistical support than a peripheral village.
