The Mall of America (vrekduur Sandton City) soos almal dit deesdae noem. Piesanggeel? Nee! Rooi is terterig, groen maak jou naar en pienk laat jou soos n marshmallow lyk, ens. Sjame. Hoekom stress hulle so? Uber is gou volbespreek. Motors word ge-shine en tyres word ge-polish. Merc s, stretched limo s, perdekarre, helikopters, ens. Hoe smarter, hoe beter. Gelukkig is vandag se meisies baie selfstandig. Mooikloof Issue 10 2017 4

Health Ajita Ratanjee The claim is that Flexitarians weigh 15 percent less than their more carnivorous (meat eating) counterparts; have a lower rate of heart disease, diabetes and cancer; and live an average of 3.6 years longer. What is a Flexitarian Diet exactly? Flexitarian is a mix of two words: flexible and vegetarian. The term was coined more than a decade ago, and in her 2009 book, The Flexitarian Diet: The Mostly Vegetarian Way to Lose Weight, Be Healthier, Prevent Disease and Add Years to Your Life, registered dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner says you don t have to eliminate meat completely to reap the health benefits associated with vegetarianism you can be a vegetarian most of the time, but still have a burger or steak when the urge hits. Becoming a flexitarian is about adding five food groups to your diet not taking any away. These are: the new meat (tofu, beans, lentils, peas, nuts and seeds, and eggs); fruits and veggies; whole grains; dairy; and sugar and spice (everything from dried herbs to salad dressing to agave nectar sweetener). Flexitarian meals revolve around plant proteins rather than animal proteins. Examples of foods you may have on this plan would be: Cereal topped with soy milk, nuts and berries for breakfast; black bean soup with a salad and wholegrain roll for lunch, an apple with peanut butter for a snack and a veggie burger with sweet potato fries for dinner. Mooikloof Issue 10 2017 6

Health My advice on the flexitarian diet: It will be a much lower cholesterol plan as plant based is zero cholesterol this is great for cardiovascular health. I love the idea of eating more plant based meals as they are very healthy. If you are not open to other protein sources like tofu or soya, this may be difficult for you and you will lack protein in your diet. Remember we are still counting carbs for weight loss many vegetarian protein sources have significant carbs that will need to be counted in. Your gut health will likely improve eating more fruit and veggies will add more fibre to your plan and possibly eliminate constipation. It is a great way to experiment with more vegetarian meals without having to go vegetarian completely. You may find you have more energy and feel lighter with a plant based meal versus an animal based meal (this will vary with individuals). It allows you to experiment and introduce more food variety into your diet that you normally may not consider. You may surprise yourself at how tasty some of the vegetarian dishes are! Always remember to eat according to your needs and disease conditions. We can always work in more vegetarian options for you but certain diseases need nutrients in specific portions for control. Consult your dietitian to help you make the necessary changes best for you. Exercise is strongly encouraged. Ideally, you should get 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week (or intense exercise for 20 minutes, three times per week), along with strength training at least two days per week. Overall, I like the idea of a Flexitarian plan in fact I am a flexitarian! Mooikloof Issue 10 9 2017 77

Health EMS = Electro Muscle Stimulation. Electrodes activate and contract the deeper layers of muscle that are hard to activate through conventional training. It also activates all the major muscle groups at the same time! By applying a rapidly pulsing current, the muscle is subjected to a 150 times more intense stimulation. This deep muscle layer contraction combined with training produces highly effective results. You save time!! With EMS you achieve visible results in a very short time. A 20 minute Body20 session equals 4 to 6 hours in the gym, so it is a huge time saver! We focus on your individual goals whether it is weight loss, muscle toning or core strengthening. Your personal trainer can control muscle groups individually by adjusting the training intensity according to your individual goals and ability. We do a regular Body Composition Analysis, first of all to determine a training plan of action, then to keep tracking your progress! The following is measured: Skeletal muscle mass, Body fat mass, Basal Metabolic rate, BMI, and more. It suits almost everybody s lifestyle and goals: Whether you are a professional athlete or have done no exercise in a long time, young or old, wanting to lose fat, build muscle, reduce cellulite, get fit, strengthen your core. Fitness training is designed to pursue a variety of outcomes that together serve to improve overall bodily health, appearance and performance. Suitable for all but the expectant moms, the viable alternative (EMS); requires a lot less time than is needed for conventional exercise regimens, yet actually produces quicker results. Given the widespread publicity regarding the link between obesity and illnesses such as type II diabetes and coronary heart disease, South Africans flood to the gym to try and lose weight to reduce the risk of these illnesses. They often choose an unsuitable, unsustainable, unguided and rigorous routine that could do more harm than good. The solution lies in choosing a safer, more moderate but effective fitness routine in the form of EMS training. Supported by healthier food choices and an informative Body Composition Analysis, they can ascertain faster progress in terms of their particular goals. Body20 is seen as the future gym, where technology combined with exercise delivers the optimum results in much less time. It is the fastest growing fitness movement in the world. Lifestyle he number of people believing that wild cats are freely moving on our streets has dramatically decreased but a lot of visitors still come to experience safaris, game farms or nature reserves only. Therefore they do not expect or want to find the goods they look for in Milan, Paris or New York. But which are the products the local consumer needs or wants to get and are not available here? Most opinions go for haute couture, shoes (there is a real need), latest automobiles But we have Ferrari and Aston Martin (maybe not the latest models), Chopard, Luis Vuitton, Armani. As an architect and designer I have looked around for luxury furniture. The top end segment is really in need of offers. The traditional scale that starts with art as the top end and has at the bottom basic consumer goods where the main criteria is to do the job and to be as cheap as possible is changing. While Industrial designers improve not only the aesthetic appeal but the functionality of some goods, the furniture industry has a serious problem and the kitsch boundary if often crossed not only through extensive multiplication and using inferior materials but also through poor design. As any luxury product that deserves the classification we need to find: outstanding design, high quality craftsmanship the most suitable materials and, of course, exclusivity. If for a collector exclusivity is the main quality (sometimes the only one like an old stamp with a printing error) for luxury furniture, be it traditional, modern interpretation or high-tech quality is not negotiable. The designer and manufacturer have to create (it sounds like art!) pieces of furniture that have embedded all the qualities mentioned above. To be more specific, you need to see it and choose what you really like. To have the special feeling that you got what you wanted, something you accept to wait for that is specially made for you ( not necessary unique but a very limited Mooikloof Issue 10 2017 10

Lifestyle edition). And then enjoy the quality of the craftsmanship, and the choice of materials, that makes the limited edition even more limited. The possibility to meet somebody that has an identical lounge suite or dining table is really minimal. I did not mention bedroom or dressing furniture as they are located in areas usually enjoyed by a very limited number of people. Despite the fact that now some people decide to show the in public for most of us these areas we do not share with the public. First of all, most people appreciate outstanding quality. Even if your knowledge of the product s origin or design trend is not up to scratch, you feel it is something special. When you listen to Mozart or look at a piece by Rembrandt or Michelangelo, you do not really need to listen to the podcast to find out that what you see or hear is a masterpiece. Keeping the proportion you can appreciate the beauty and quality of a product without looking at the certificate or the price tag. Of course you eventually have to check these items as they are usually very much linked. If one looks for five or seven star hotels (I don t know why nobody seems to look for a six star one) about 90% of them show heavily crafted classical or baroque furniture. This is not only because we make a connection between the amount of work and the value of the product but because we identify these types with aristocracy or extreme wealth. Be they left or right wing a lot of people, even the ones that dislike the top upper class, secretly dream at their lifestyle. For a couple of days (or nights) you can fell like royalty. What about having your little (or not) treasure, your space where you can feel like you want to feel. And you want to make sure that this is the real thing! Not a Chinese imitation. (Although they recently show some decent modern furniture, they still have a very long way to go.) What about young people or not so young who have a taste for modern or contemporary furniture? Similar to the opposite trend in the automobile world (the ones who like vintage cars) the number of people fond of luxury contemporary furniture is growing. The furniture manufacturers are studying the market and when the demand is there the products are there. The main condition has the same outstanding quality. Therefore if you like classic or you like lime modern you have almost the same choice. Sometimes we have to make a big effort but the satisfaction of settling for the best is priceless. Easy to say. It may be priceless in emotional terms but real luxury has a significant price tag. If one considers the unhappiness of or the regret of settling for something that is not the best you can get (I am not trying to steal the Gillette line) the best for you (this is very important) then you should try. Today I discussed with a friend and colleague about the fact that Jorn Utzon used some of his own money to make sure that the Sydney Opera House is built the way he designed it. Wouldn t a lot of people (including himself) regret if he did not do it? My show case company is (again) TURRI. They meet my quite strict criteria (and I am not easily pleased) and Essar Design made an agreement with TURRI to be their sole representative in South Africa. Quality and range: see for yourselves. PS. If part of feeling good includes showing off, you can go for it! If you want to keep it for yourself you can also do it. But it really feels good to try. Mooikloof Issue 10 2017 11

Trave l James Clarke We set out at dawn one cold September Sunday, heading out of Sandton onto the N3 towards Durban. We were bound for Wakkerstroom, three-hours away and off to the southeast. Wackers a small town 27km south of Volksrus and noted for its huge wetland and golden hills. Mary and I had been there before but, having just spent the best part of three days there in brilliant spring weather, we have come to appreciate it for what is was a classic example of an unspoiled 19th century South African dorp, unsullied by time. As Rupert Brooke wrote of somewhere else, there s a peace and holy quiet there. Its steepled, sandstone kerk stands high above a scattering of tinroofed houses like a mother hen watching over her scattered chicks. There are cattle and sheep, even in town, and backyard poultry and sometimes guineafowl scurrying across the road. Wakkerstroom is the 2nd oldest town in Mpumalanga. It used to fall within die Ou Transvaal and was established in 1859. The small widely dispersed houses are mostly well-kept, lending the town an air of prosperity whose denizens take a pride in the place. Several homes belong to city dwellers, mostly professional people, who come down for weekends. The town is surrounded by rich grassland and high, rounded hills. At their base are extensive vleis shining in the sun and fringed with bright green willows. The system is fed by a lively stream lively even during the driest part of the year. We watched three otters playing right on the edge of town. Town? Wakkerstroom, technically, only just qualifies as a town but is, nevertheless, famous among a certain category of people from the Far East and Europe across to the Americas. This is because the wetland, one of South Africa s last major unspoiled wetlands, rates among the world s richest in birdlife. There s nearly always somebody standing on the side of the quiet main road leading from the town which links Volksrus to an enigmatic little place called Braunschweig. They are scanning the surrounding vlei hoping to catch a glimpse of a Red-chested Flufftail, Purple Swamphen, African Shelduck or some other rarity, many unique to South Africa. Travel I recall many years ago standing there with Peter Sullivan, later chairman of BirdLife SA, and ornithologist Ken Newman. Peter was dreaming up a scheme to train out-of-work men in the neighboring township to become bird guides. We found binoculars for them and today some are nationally respected for their ability to find bird species that people have travelled half the world to find. On this visit we were guided by one of them Lucky Sibya. Wakkers thrives on tourism. We were there to bird but we became enamored by the quiet town whose main shopping street is, maybe, less than a hundred yards long. It has small, century-old shops and a pub and restaurant on one side and the church on the other. In between was a sign saying the ancient Bioscope was re-opening that week. The picture house was in a small, isolated, barn-like building round the corner. The gala movie? Grease. The highlight of our three days was not necessarily seeing two Crowned Cranes doing their highstepping dancing ritual or a group of four Blue Korhaans a rare species confined to a small region of South Africa. Our highlight was finding a restaurant hidden behind a rough hedge and a modest little sign reading, Bistro. Mooikloof Issue 10 2017 12

Travel Pictures: Mary Broadley Mooikloof Issue 10 2017 13

Trave l It was obviously once a rambling house and is set in an equally rambling garden with two or three scattered tables outside. It is the interior that entrances. I had not noticed another sign outside otherwise I would not have been so surprised. It read Memamorphis Gallery and Bistro a deliberate misspelling the reason of which was explained but went over my head. The walls are covered in framed paintings not local hopeful work but high quality and seriously professional stuff and at prices so reasonable they must astonish the overseas visitors who visit Wakkerstroom throughout the year. There was so much to delight the eye in every room including some highly original sculptures; there s an amusing human-sized, bipedal warthog wearing size 10s and a dazzling throne made of recycled odds and ends. The cheerful restaurateur s name is Lizzie Lack, a former political scientist and diplomat who was stationed in South America but who resigned to do what she d always wanted to cook. She founded restaurants in Cape Town and the Western Cape as well as in Clarens, before discovering Wakkers. For somebody who lived in Spanish-speaking Argentina the food prepared by Lizzie and her sous chef, Paul Graoblert is more Portuguese, especially the huge imported prawns. At lunchtime the Bistro serves tapas. The wine prices are not far off Johannesburg s retail prices and the menu and food quality would prove popular in any big city, anywhere. There is so much about the bistro that is unique: the table lighting, the table decorations even the table tops, even the windows Being spring, the weather hadn t quite dispensed with winter so the restaurant had blankets over the backs of the chairs and a hearth fire. Wakkerstroom s founders shot an eland bull in the 1850s and cut from it an unbroken thong 137 metres long. They used this to measure out the streets and erven and when, in 1941, the town was properly surveyed there was only a slight difference between the new pegs and the old. The Transvaal Republic deemed the settlement should be named after the President Marthinus Wesselstroom and, officially, it still is. But by 1904 the name Wakkerstroom became entrenched. Fair enough a wakkers stroom means lively stream and that stream is the life blood of this famous wetland. Mooikloof Issue 10 2017 14

Hannah's Thoughts Hannah Dredge What s the first thing you think of when you think about England? Yes, that s right, a steaming cup of tea. Even if the first thing you think of is the Queen, you can bet your hat she s holding a cup of tea, pinkie poised at the perfect angle. There s no doubt about it, the British love a good cup of tea. Just how much do they love it though? Read on to discover just how far a Brit will go and has gone for that perfect cuppa I know what you re thinking, the Industrial Revolution cannot possibly have been caused by a cup of tea. And in a sense, yes, you re right. But tea did actually play a role in some rather interesting ways. By the time the Industrial Revolution began in the 18th century, tea was widely distributed and consumed in England. England experienced several unplanned benefits as a result of their massive tea consumption. Because tea was so widely distributed, even the working class were making cuppas on a regular basis. One of the best things about tea was that to make tea the water had to be boiled. (Obvious, right?) But the importance of this is that people were boiling the water before they drank it and this led to a massive decrease in the spread of water-borne diseases like cholera. Tea was literally keeping the British working population healthy. Also, tea provided an extremely useful dose of caffeine and morale to the tired workers. As a result, the working population was healthy and motivated and able to carry forward the Industrial Revolution. And all this with the vision of ensuring a constant supply of tea, no doubt. Let s face it, drinking tea isn t exactly an adrenaline junkie s favourite activity. That is, until Simon Berry took matters into his own hands in late 2016. Berry decided that simply drinking a cuppa just wasn t going to cut it. If he was going to drink a cup of tea he was going to do it properly and set a Guinness World Record while doing it. So, what did he do? Berry decided to grab some bungee cord and throw himself off a 73.41m high platform. That s not all though. He placed a steaming cup of tea on the ground below the platform and took a cookie up with him. And then he took the Guinness World Record for the Highest Bungee Dunk ever. That s right, he jumped off a 73m platform just so he could dunk his biscuit in his tea. I told you these Brits would do anything for a cup of tea! When tea was first introduced to Britain, it was just another commodity, nothing special. Little did they know! Tea was initially introduced to the men s coffeehouses. At the time of tea s intro-duction to society women weren t even really allowed to be out or to enter a coffeehouse so they didn t have much exposure to this new drink. And then things changed. The Twining family came along and decided that they were tired of the strange gender rules of society. Women deserved a good cup of tea too! In 1717, Thomas Twining opened the Golden Lyon, a tea shop, and from there, there was no turning back. It s not to say that women were automatically free and wearing pants and becoming engineers. They did get more and more freedom though as tea gained popularity among high society and it became more acceptable for women to be seen drinking it. And there you have it a cup of tea is the key to bringing about meaningful change in society! The last thing you want while filming a movie is a drunk actor. In fact, some actors even have to sign contracts before to ensure that they don t pitch up at work drunk or drink on set. One of the tricks of the movie industry is to replace whisky with watered-down tea as it looks much the same. Similarly, beer is often replaced with iced tea when filming movies. Of course it s not just British actors that do this but it does sound suspiciously like an excuse a Brit would use to grab a cup of tea on set Mooikloof Issue 10 2017 15

Mooikloof Issue 10 2017 17

Kyk gerus weer. Vroulief is so vaal as kan kom. Mooikloof Issue 10 2017 18

) as hul oorlewingstema aangeneem. Gryskopmossie Mooikloof Issue 10 2017 19
