REGION OVERVIEW-PUGLIA Puglia (Apulia) Puglia (Apulia) is the region on the heel of the boot of Italy. As a region, it competes with Sicily for the place of second-largest producer of wine by output in Italy, though both are far surpassed by the Veneto. Though it has not always had a strong reputation for the production of wine, it has in recent years been granted 25 DOC zones, as well as six IGT zones. The name Puglia derives from the Roman a-pluvia, meaning lack of rain. The climate of Puglia is hot and arid, creating an environment that in recent years has been found to be ideal for certain varietals of grapes. While Puglia has always had an abundance of grapes in terms of output, over the past two decades, both indigenous varietals and international varietals that thrive in the hot, dry climate have been increasing significantly in popularity. Important Grape Varieties: Important wine types: White Moscato Bianco Bombino Trebbiano Red Negroamaro Zinfandel Sangiovese Montepulciano Uva di Troia White Locorotondo Gravina Red Salice Salento Primitivo Alezio Brindisi Nardò Castel del Monte Daunia 4
