growers What say... I grow 1,000 acres of transplants every year. A lot of my customers like the combination of PD7305LC and PD7309LC. They set PD7305LC early because it handles the stress of cool nights. They set PD7309LC later and it will stand in the field until they are ready to cut it. Rick Wilkerson 2016 Murray, KY

I use mostly F.W. Rickard Seeds tobacco seed. They offer more varieties than the other seed companies and have the PD varieties that everyone wants. Jay Head 2016 Clarksville, TN

All other ratings are based on information from the University of Kentucky/University of Tennessee and F.W. Rickard Seeds and do not guarantee performance. Characteristics for each variety are typical for that variety grown under optimum conditions, but may be affected and/or changed by environmental conditions, agricultural practices, and varying soil types.

Black Shank Resistant Variety Descriptions KT D6LC is a medium maturity dark-fired hybrid, with moderate resistance to Black Shank and high yield potential. It also has resistance to Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Wildfire, and Black Root Rot. KT D8LC is a medium maturity fire-cured and air-cured variety with a growth habit and Black Shank resistance similar to KT D4LC. It has excellent yield potential and quality. KT D14LC has very high resistance to Black Shank Race (0) and Race (1). It is a high yielding; medium maturity dark-fired hybrid that also has high resistance to Black Root Rot, Tobacco Mosaic Virus, and Wildfire. PD 7302LC is a medium maturity fire-cured and air-cured hybrid release from F.W. Rickard Seeds with resistance to Black Shank Race (0), Black Root Rot, and Tobacco Mosaic Virus. It is upright in growth, and leaves grow in more erect position on stalk. It has good yield and excellent curing characteristics. PD 7302LC is a good choice for early transplanted first cures in double-crop, fire-cured tobacco where Black Shank Race (0) may exist. PD 7305LC is a dark-fired hybrid release from F.W. Rickard Seeds. It is an early maturing fire-cured variety with a very prostrate growth habit. It has excellent yield and good quality. PD 7305LC has high resistance to Black Shank Race (0) and moderate resistance to Black Shank Race Race (1). It is also resistant to Tobacco Mosaic Virus and Black Root Rot. PD 7305LC may have potential for use in the cigarwrapper style market due to its fairly smooth leaf texture. It may also be a good choice for first cures transplanted in early May for double-crop curing. PD 7309LC is a medium maturity fire-cured and air-cured hybrid release from F.W. Rickard Seeds with resistance to Black Shank Race (0). It has excellent yield and curing characteristics. Leaves are long and drooping. Other characteristics of PD 7309LC are most similar to Narrow Leaf MadoleLC. It can be used as a fire-cured or air-cured variety.

PD 7318LC is a medium maturity fire-cured and air-cured hybrid release from F.W. Rickard Seeds with resistance to Black Shank Race (0), Black Root Rot, and Tobacco Mosaic Virus. It has excellent yield and curing characteristics. Leaves are long and drooping. PD 7318LC may be a good choice for early transplanted first cures in double-crop, fire-cured tobacco where Black Shank Race (0) may exist. PD 7319LC is a medium maturity fire-cured and air-cured hybrid release from F.W. Rickard Seeds with high resistance to Black Shank Race (0) and low resistance to Black Shank Race (1). It is also resistant to Tobacco Mosaic Virus. It has excellent yield and curing characteristics. PD 7319LC is the first dark variety with high Black Shank Race (0) resistance and at least low Black Shank Race (1) resistance that has performed well as an air-cured variety. TN D950 is an early maturing fire-cured variety with excellent yield and good quality. It is resilient under environmental stresses in the field. Leaves are long and drooping, but not to the same extent as Narrow Leaf MadoleLC. Leaf cures to dark brown in color. This variety is available in screened seed only. VA 309 is an early to medium maturity fire-cured and aircured variety, with good yield and quality. Leaves are semi-erect growing on the plant and are dark green in the field. Leaf typically cures to a good brown color. This variety is available in screened seed only.

growers What say... With F.W. Rickard Seeds, I have always had excellent germination. Everything comes up evenly and has good vigor especially the PD7319LC. Michael Francies 2016 Elkton, KY

Non-Black Shank Resistant Variety Descriptions Little Crittenden is a medium to late maturity fire-cured and air-cured variety, with very good yield and excellent quality. Leaves are long with considerable crinkle and grow in semi-erect position on stalk. Bottom leaves hold up well. Leaf cures to brown in color. Ease of curing is similar to that of Narrow Leaf MadoleLC and KY 171. This variety is available in screened seed only. Narrow Leaf MadoleLC is a medium to late maturity fire-cured and air-cured variety, with both excellent yield and quality. Leaves are long and drooping; leaf surface is smooth. Narrow Leaf MadoleLC doesn t perform as well in cool, damp weather it typically performs better when planted after May 15th. It is an easy curing variety; leaves cure to reddish brown in color. PD 7312LC is a medium maturity fire-cured and air-cured hybrid release from F.W. Rickard Seeds. This is a hybrid between msky 171 and Narrow Leaf MadoleLC. It has the excellent yield and quality observed on NL Madole and the Black Root Rot and Tobacco Mosaic Virus resistance from KY 171. It performs well as an early transplanted variety (prior to May 15), so it has been a good choice for early transplanted first cures for doublecrop fire curing, provided Black Shank is not a concern. ShireyLC is a dark fire-cured variety well suited to the Virginia dark production system. It is an early to medium maturity variety that is easy curing with excellent quality. ShireyLC has a prostrate growth habit and does not perform as well in cool, damp weather. It typically performs better if transplanted after May 15th.
