The Roman legions brought the vine to the pays nantais, but cultivation did not fully develop until the Middle Ages. In 1709, the vineyard was completely destroyed by frost, and replanted with the grape Melon de Bourgogne imported from Burgundy. This grape became the famous Muscadet. This is a high quality Muscadet which has matured for two or three months on the fermentation lees - 'sur Lie', giving it a richer complex flavour with a zesty, dry finish. Excellent with seafood. 55 SANCERRE, Domaine de la Grande Maison 2009 Domaine Chaumeau Balland Loire 32.50 Rich and ripe with creamy gooseberry and herbaceous fruits on the nose, complemented with fresh lemon acidity to finish. This is a big, intense wine - the subtle mineral and ripe fruit flavours are enhanced by smooth, creamy malolactic characters and extended aging in barrels on yeast lees. 60 PINOT NOIR, Eradus Estate 2008 Marlborough New Zealand 32.50 Exotic fruit and spice on the nose, with redcurrant and strawberry flavours and red cherry hints too. Fresh and appealing fruity palate, more subtle and complex than it at first appears. FRANCE - Rhone 61 COTES DU LUBERON BLANC 2008 Domaine Perrin Rhone 19.75 This wine is bright straw yellow in appearance with elegant toasted, peach-scented aromas. It is dry & well balanced with full fruity flavours leading to a long finish 63 COTES DU VENTOUX ROSE 2009 Domaine Perrin Rhone 21.00 The Côtes de Ventoux appellation in the Southern Rhone, around Mont Ventoux, is more famous for its reds, but clever winemaking, and the use of both Syrah and grenache grapes, allows this world renowned producer to produce a delicious, luscious fruit-driven rose. A teriffic, summer wine! 64 CROZES-HERMITAGE, Le Millepertuis 2007 Domaine Guyot Rhone 32.50 This wine is dark ruby garnet in colour. On the nose there are delicate aromas of red berries and a slight hint of spice and pepper. It is well balanced on the palate with a supple and soft tannins and a long fruity finish 6

65 CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE, 2006 Chateau Beauchene Rhone 49.50 Châteauneuf du Pape is easily the most famous of the Côtes du Rhône wines. The oldest historical documents on the vineyards date from the time of the first Popes in Avignon, who had chosen Châteauneuf as their summer home. Ch Beauchene is one of the leading lights in the appellation taking the necessary care to select and age a great Châteauneuf du Pape. The Grenache is fully expressed with a powerful, complex nose and great concentration on the palate. 67 HERMITAGE ROUGE, 1998 Louis Bernard From the northern Rhône, the wine is made from 100% Syrah and is big, complex and vibrant with lovely spicy matyre red fruits. Rich new world fruit, but with a restrained with elegance though. 72 MERLOT, Bainskloof Estate, 2007 Breede River Valley South Africa 19.50 This is an eccentric and warm hearted red. The intensity and earthy weight of the Merlot gives notes of mulberry and soft plum, and damson notes from the heat of the vineyard. Soft ripe tannins giving the wine a good length and rich backbone. 73 RHEBOKSKLOOF PINOTAGE, 2008 Paarl A ripe, full bodied Pinotage with a complex, smoky palate and savoury, toasted notes underpinning a rich fruit character. South Africa 25.50 SPAIN 74 RUEDA BLANCO, Bodegas Vina Garedo 2008 (Viura-Verdejo-Sauvignon Blanc) Spain 21.00 Made from the sought-after Viura and verdelho grapes, blended with small amounts of Sauvignon, this wine is full with fresh stone fruit character, completed by an aromatic and interesting minerality.
