Welcome home Our home is the place to which we always return. It is familiar to us because we have prepared it for ourselves: the people with whom we share this place and many things around us peppered with countless memories. Not everything is always pefect, but everything belongs to us. A place that changes. There are many things we do not really need but we keep them because we associate something with them. And many things we do not perceive because they are so familiar to us. Our tables integrate themselves into these worlds even if every world is different. This is due to their functionality, their clear forms and the ideas that are behind each table. Every table is a strong character. Many variants also allow to choose the matching side table. And if he is not present we adjust him, for example with a special color. 2 3
Side table M 05 The Side table M 05 is a mixture of side table, low table and tray table. The series consists of 4 tables in 4 different heights with 4 diverse trays: square, round, oval and rectangular. All trays are removable. You can use the tables in front and beside a sofa or an armchair. As a single table or even when you need more space, you take another one or a third one and so on. The tables can be moved among themselves for needing less space because of their different heights. And if you do not need the things you put on the tables any more, you can put them back using the tray. Side table M 05 Edition The Side table M 05 Edition includes three versions of the round table. The trays in this edition are made of special metals: aluminum, copper and brass. The aluminum is anodized and thus has a hard, matte finish. Copper and brass are sanded but the surfaces are not treated separately. Therefore the trays get a patina over time. Side table Kaiser The tables of two identical elements combine the exciting contrast of the low strength of the material of the table surface towards the voluminous pedestal-like base. A play of geometric forms and the evolution of a 2-dimensional material towards 3-dimensional structure. Folded like paper are the tables as sculptures in space. Side table Kanji The series of Side table Kanji is inspired by the characters of the Japanese language. Like the line weights vary with a bamboo pen in calligraphy so Kanji changes in the spatial observation: its shape is linear or flat depending on the angle. Kanji has a complex production basis because each table is composed of a single metal strip whose ends just almost touch. Design: Thomas Merkel, 2014 22 23

Thomas Merkel Thomas Merkel has repeatedly worked for many years with the subject side table. The collection of S+ Systemmöbel currently comprises three series: I like side tables. They are the little helpers that can be almost used anywhere and can be very different. Sometimes they are more practical, then smart or sculptural, unobtrusive and reserved or expressive and dominant. But they always go into a relationship with their environment and the users. And since each interior is individually it takes different characters to find the matching table. It is also helpful if variants are available and if the opportunity for a special color is given. Sometimes it might be just this one colour because only this one fits to the sofa and of course to the floor. For me it s important that my furniture blends in if they are complementary means. For example you can divide the large Kaiser and set the table halves separately beside the sofa. Thomas Merkel 28 29
