Burgundy 2016 En Primeur Tasting Wednesday 10 th January 2018 The Boot & Flogger, SE1 Welcome to our cask sample tasting of 2016 Burgundy wines, offered for sale En Primeur. Our full offer will be released online in the coming week as allocations are confirmed. The 2016 Vintage The 2016 vintage was full of drama, a triumph in the face of the most adverse weather in living memory. On the night of the 26 th /27 th April Chablis and the length of the Côte d Or was struck by severe frosts. Far from helping matters, the morning sun refracted through the frost and scorched the fruit beneath. Unlike most years when the frost clings to the bottom of the slopes, the damage was indiscriminate, affecting many of the most famous premier and grand cru vineyard sites. Later in the growing season, mildew struck, further reducing crops - a 50% reduction being common. In some climats, losses were complete and no wine was made at all. Fortunately, the weather from late summer was excellent and moreover the tiny quantities of remaining fruit had full benefit of the vines root systems, gaining concentration and complexity, evident in the finished wines. The Wines Tasting at the domaines in late November, we found wines with excellent balance, fine acidity and elegance. The reds, whilst not as abundantly fruity as the 2015s, have Page 1 of 9
ripe, complex tannins, making them more classical than the 2015s. The whites have excellent concentration and energy if only there were more of them! Our Offer Rising prices and limited supply may not be good news for Burgundy lovers, but there is a parallel, more cheerful narrative in recent years. Clive Coates wrote recently that Burgundy is in a golden age and the quality of wine making has never been higher. For us, wines from less well-known villages (Auxey-Duresses, Maranges, Santenay, St Romain and Fixin for example) are offering quality previously associated with more famous names. This is underlined by Neil Martin scoring Bachelet-Monnot s Maranges 1er Cru La Fussiere an amazing 91-93 points. Whether you re looking for Grand Cru wines to lay down or affordable Bourgogne and to in a year or two, we hope you ll find both great value and some superb wines in the selection below. A Note About Tasting Cask Samples These wines have been drawn from cask, most will spend a further 8-10 months or more in barrel. Tasting unfinished wines at this stage is about assessing the balance of fruit, alcohol, tannin and acidity. Often, the finest wines can be the most challenging to taste, with less obvious fruit character than more junior wines. Our advice is to concentrate on intensity and length of flavour on the palate and how harmonious is the overall impression. Availability & Ordering All wines available in strictly limited quantities. Prices where shown exclude UK duty and VAT, which will become chargeable at the prevailing rate when the wines are released from bond. The wines will land in the UK in late 2018/early 2019.
