welcome to A4F Welcome to the inaugural Amador Four Fires festival. A4F is a wine and food experience: an immersion into an entire region, igniting all your senses. From the vetted wines to the award-winning chefs and locavore tastings, we want to welcome you to one of California s hidden treasures, Amador County. Craig Palmer & Deirdre Mueller co-producers welcome from the ACFF Welcome and thank you for attending Amador Four Fires. All proceeds from this festival go to the Amador County Fair Foundation, whose stated goal is to support the Amador County Fairgrounds. Amador Four Fires is the kickoff event of a five year plan to revitalize the Fair infrastructure and make Amador County Fairgrounds a self-sufficient property. In addition to the award winning Amador County Fair, this property is a fire evacuation center, home of high school rodeo, and numerous celebrations and educational seminars. Everyone will benefit when the foundation capital campaign ends in 5 years, but you are here today, day 1 of the process. As President of the Amador County Fair Foundation, thank you for helping us get this party started. Enjoy! Patrick Crew, PRESIDENT amador county fair foundation 3 AMADORFOURFIRES.COM

amador s unique TERROIR While vitis vinifera wine grapes grow nearly everywhere, not every variety thrives in every climate. The key to making high quality wines is best described by the French term, terroir. Roughly translated as a sense of place, it applies to how and where a specific varietal is grown. High quality wines demand high quality grapes; quality starts in the vineyard. The Sierra Foothill American Viticulture Area (AVA) stretches along the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, roughly 170 miles long and 12 miles wide; encompassing nearly 6,000 acres in vineyards. Nestled in the center is Amador County, uniquely placed to benefit from the shallow infertile mountainside soils. This creates moderate stress on the vines, producing low to moderate yields of high quality grapes. Amador County s Mediterranean climate is another crucial component. The grapes thrive in the dry summer heat; perfect for even ripening. Vineyard elevations, ranging between 1000-3,000 feet, combined with a beneficial Delta Breeze, modify the occasional periods of excessive heat. The final piece of the puzzle is to grow the grapes that thrive in the local terroir. Today, at Amador Four Fires, you ll find the French varietals that love the heat of the Southern Rhone Valley, all the classic varietals of the Italian Boot, and the traditional wines of the Iberian Peninsula. What they have in common with Amador County is Terroir. Cruise through the various zones, and as you taste the regional foods prepared on open flames, taste the quality of Amador County Wines. how to enjoy a WINE TASTING EVENT WINE TASTING TIPS Don t wear perfumes, colognes, or aftershaves. It masks the aromas of the wine. Never pour your own wine. Place your glass down on the table for the pourer to pour (don t be a moving target!). Share the space. After getting your wine, step back or move to one side so that others can get their pour. PACE YOURSELF Eat. Enjoy the food available at the festival. Drink water often. (This also refreshes your palate.) Take your time, pace yourself. Enjoy the demos and seminars, listen to the music, and enjoy the surroundings. There is plenty of time to sample the wines. Don t drink all of every sample poured. Take in the aromas, take a sip or two, and pour out the excess. It s what experienced tasters do. It s not rude! Use a spit cup. Many people have come to realize that a large tasting like this is best enjoyed by spitting the wines. Use one of the disposable beverage cups provided. Trust me; you will enjoy the wines more. And, of course, don t drive if you ve had too much. See any of our volunteers and we ll make arrangements for alternative transportation. HAVE FUN AND DISCOVER A NEW FAVORITE WINE! 21 AMADORFOURFIRES.COM
