Biology 30S Unit #1 Wellness & Homeostasis Passive Transport Investigation So far we have looked at some basic cell physiology. The following investigation is designed to help you visualize the three major methods of Passive Transport Diffusion, Facilitated Diffusion and Osmosis Your Task: Review your notes on the methods of Passive Transport Observe the series of demonstrations and record your observations Analyze and explain your results Should you run into difficulty with this assignment or if you have any questions please ask for help either in class OR by email at AskMrLloyd@shaw.ca This Investigation is due

Biology 30S Evaluation Criteria Points Quality and Accuracy of 5 3 Poor Less Than 2 are correct 6 Weak At Least 2 are correct 9 Adequate At Least 3 are correct 12 Good At Least 4 are correct 15 Exceptional All 5 are correct Completeness 2 The is incomplete 10 The is complete Respect for Deadline 2 The has been handed in late 5 The has been handed in on time Roll the Dice The has been handed in after the assignment has been evaluated and returned to the class. The Educational Dice are required to determine the mark for this assignment Total 30

Station #1 A Tea Bag is put into room temperature, hot and cold water. In the space below describe what happens: Food colouring is placed into hot and cold water. In the space below describe what happens: Explain your results (and don t just say because of diffusion!)? How does temperature influence the rate of diffusion?

Station #2 The Potato Cubes Observe the potato cubes used in this station. Measure and record the cubes dimensions and color and record your results in the table below. The potato cubes are then put into a iodine permanganate solution for 30 minutes. Each solution has a different concentration. At the end 30 minutes, the cubes are removed from the solution Observe the cubes again. Measure and record the cubes dimensions and color and record your results in the table below Explain your results in the space below:

Station #3 Using dialysis tubing we can create cell like conditions and a selectively permeable membrane In the table below, record you observations Observations (1) Molasses and tubing, Water in Beaker (2) Tubing, Molasses and Beaker (3) Iodine Solution in Tubing, Starch and Beaker (4) Starch and Tubing, Iodine Solution in Beaker (5) Glucose Solution in Tubing, Beaker Before After

Analysis (Station #3) For each procedures, indicate which molecules cross the membranes and which molecules don t. Explain WHY you came to this conclusion. Use the following terms to explain why each type of molecule is capable or incapable of crossing the membrane and how the movement takes place: Semi-Permeable Membrane Concentration Hypertonic Isotonic

Station #4 Here are some additional cell like situations. Record your observations in the tables below and explain your results. (1) The Potato Chip In this demonstration, distilled water is added to a potato chip. In the space below record you observations Explain your results (2) The Potato Slices (Cactus Cuts) In these demonstrations, uniformly cut slices of potato are placed into different solutions. In the table below record your observations Explain your results

(3) The Egg In these demonstrations, we dissolved the hard shell off of a standard grade Egg. This egg then is used to represent a single cell. We placed the egg into different solutions. In the table below, record your observations Explain your Results
