Freiligrathstrasse 7/9 90482 Nuremberg Email: info@johbarth.de www.johbarth.com Regine Barth Main points for trade press conference in Nuremberg on 10 July 2014 1. World beer production Allow me once more to highlight the key figures on world beer production and the ever-popular rankings: In the rankings of the world s beer-producing nations, Germany changed places with Russia and now ranks fourth, with 94 million hectolitres behind China, the USA and Brazil. Among the world s 40 biggest brewery groups, as a result of mergers and acquisitions, there are now six German groups: Radeberger, Oettinger, Bitburger, Krombacher, Brau Holding International and newly Warsteiner. The combined world market share of these groups totals 2.3 per cent. Just as a reminder: the five largest brewers have a combined market share of almost 51 per cent. However: the bigger the market shares of individual breweries within a country become, the greater the number of craft brewers becomes and this is no longer an American phenomenon by any means. Stephan Barth will be looking more closely at the craft brewers later. World beer production increased by only 0.6 per cent in 2013 a significant decline compared with the growth rates of recent years. This is accounted for by widely varying developments in individual countries, as Heinrich Meier has already detailed. The 40 biggest beer-producing countries continue to account for more than 90 per cent of the world s total beer output.

Statement by Regine Barth in Nuremberg on 10 July 2014 Page 2 2. The world hop market There still remain surplus stocks particularly of high alpha hops from crop years 2009 to 2012 in merchants warehouses. These stocks have already been sold for the most part and are only waiting to be called off by the brewing industry. We expect these call-off instructions to be given more quickly now, primarily due to the poor harvest in 2013. Crop year 2012 finally marked the end of the structural supply surplus of hops and alpha acid in the hop market; in other words, supply and demand are becoming increasingly evenly balanced, although demand for certain varieties may exceed supply. It is definitely too early to make any forecasts concerning the 2014 hop harvest in Germany: after all, the hop is and will remain a natural product and therefore it is not yet possible today to make any reliable statements about the hop harvest. One thing that can be said, however, is that for the first time since 2008 hop acreage in Germany is not declining, but has increased by almost three per cent, in fact. In the USA it has grown by as much as nine per cent. Planting of aroma/flavour varieties is on the increase worldwide, more than compensating for the clearance of bitter/high alpha varieties. The manner in which the hop market develops depends on developments within the brewing industry. If the trend towards more heavily hopped beers continues, this could lead to competition in the procurement market. But regardless of how the market develops: Joh. Barth & Sohn and the companies in the Barth-Haas Group are in any case well equipped to face any changes arising in the hop market.

Statement by Regine Barth in Nuremberg on 10 July 2014 Page 3 3. Joh. Barth & Sohn and the Barth-Haas Group In 2013, Joh. Barth & Sohn further consolidated its leading position in Germany. We are successful above all because we have significantly expanded our portfolio. To be successful today, a company has to see itself primarily as a service-provider for its customers. The step from being purely a hop merchant to being a service-provider is one that we took some time ago and we haven t reached the end of that journey yet. Our market share in Germany is roughly 30 per cent. The group's family-owned companies in Germany, Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and China guarantee a global market presence. The predominant share of group turnover is earned in Germany and in the USA. Our 2013/2014 fiscal year does not close until the end of this month. We estimate that compared with turnover of 220 million euros last year, there will be only a slight decrease if any. Turnover by volume, on the other hand, did fall which will come as no surprise in view of the poor 2013 harvest. The number of our employees remained unchanged: there are approximately 600, of whom 40 per cent are in Germany.

Freiligrathstrasse 7/9 90482 Nuremberg Email: info@johbarth.de www.johbarth.com Stephan Barth Statement at trade press conference in Nuremberg on 10 July 2014 My cousin has told you about hops, about new varieties and about new ground that we are breaking in terms of picking and processing. One example of this is our Finest Harvest Edition which we are presenting this year for the second time after its launch in 2013. Finest Harvest Edition: the grands crus among the hop varieties The principle is quite simple: Selected growers harvest varieties that are popular for dry hopping in selected hop gardens. We then process these hops within two weeks to preserve their fresh aroma. That is the principle of the Finest Harvest Edition. The advantages for brewers are obvious: the oil content is higher, the hops are bagged virtually harvest-fresh and so the aroma has a particularly fresh character. The FHE varieties are therefore ideally suited for dry hopping. The Finest Harvest Edition provides impressive proof of our innovative strength. And, thanks to the craft beer movement, innovation has gained a new standing in the beer market worldwide. Craft beer is changing things It is hardly imaginable that 9,000 would come to a conference for small and medium-size breweries in Germany. But that is exactly what happened recently at the Craft Brewers Conference in the USA.

Statement by Stephan Barth in Nuremberg on 10 July 2014 Page 2 Craft beer is good for beer; it is changing consumers awareness of beer as a product category. Beer is now perceived differently, no longer only as cold, yellow and wet. And, above all: beer is no longer defined solely in terms of price. More and more people now know more and more about beer. Whether they actually drink more beer is doubtful, however. The statistics on per-capita beer consumption in Germany paint a different picture. But when it comes to drinking craft beers, it is not the quantity that counts. I would like to repeat the words from a tasting of beer specialities that I quoted at the presentation of the last Barth Report. The beer sommelier at the tasting said: You shouldn t drink our beers when you re thirsty. Our beers should be drunk in small quantities on special occasions. However: there are other beers than craft beers... A company like Joh. Barth & Sohn, which sees itself as a provider of all hoprelated services, does of course profit from the craft beer boom. Although the craft brewers have a world market share of two per cent at the most, they consume roughly ten per cent of world hop production. This is not surprising when one considers, for example, that IPA and pale ale account for about one third of all craft beers sold in the USA. We are therefore pleased to see the growth of the craft beer segment, but: the lion s share of our turnover still comes from non-craft beers. There must and always will be beers that are wonderfully refreshing and lend themselves to drinking several glasses on occasion. This aspect of thirstquenching is simply not a priority with craft beers. These other beers to avoid using the expression normal beers are neither worse nor better than craft beers; they are simply different.

Statement by Stephan Barth in Nuremberg on 10 July 2014 Page 3 Joh. Barth & Sohn is part of the global beer market, not just the craft beer market Joh. Barth & Sohn and the Barth-Haas Group are part of the global beer market they are not just an active part of the craft brewers movement. We work for breweries of all sizes and we support them in their endeavours to develop and present extraordinary beers. Here are some examples: We support initiatives such as the World Beer Cup or the European Beer Star. We are the main sponsor of the beer sommeliers world championship, which will probably take place next year in Brazil, one of the world s up-and-coming beer nations. At our hops academy, we teach our hop growers in particular the necessary skills for growing excellent hops. The Barth-Haas Hops Academy also shows breweries and brewers worldwide how and with which hops they can optimise brewing processes more efficiently in order to develop unique, high-quality beers. And by the way: the more craft breweries that are opened, the greater will be the demand for qualified master brewers. Our European think tank, Barth Innovations, is a constant source of ideas for the brewing industry on new applications for hops. At our research brewery in St. Johann, breweries wishing to try out new recipes can put them to the test. The research brewery is currently being expanded to meet the rising demand. Our Hop Aroma Compendium, which we developed with two world champion beer sommeliers and a perfumist, is becoming a bestseller too. It has now grown to three volumes. All of this benefits all breweries. There is one very special service, however, that we have developed only for craft brewers and small breweries: our subsidiary Simply Hops an online shop supplies breweries with small and extremely small quantities of selected hops.

Statement by Stephan Barth in Nuremberg on 10 July 2014 Page 4 These many activities underline our aspiration to be the world market leader in hop-related services. Our objectives for the year ahead remain unchanged: stable growth even more intensive cooperation with hop growers and breweries, above all through additional services We are confident that the new fiscal year will bring not only more challenges, but also more successes.

Freiligrathstrasse 7/9 90482 Nuremberg Email: info@johbarth.de www.johbarth.com Press release World beer production rises to almost two billion hectolitres in 2013 - Germany is number 4 in the international rankings Munich, 10 July 2014. In 2013 world beer output rose by 11 million hectolitres to a total of 1,973 billion hectolitres. Germany, with an output of more than 94 million hectolitres, accounted for approximately five per cent of the total. This can be read in the Barth Report, Hops 2013/2014, which has been presented in Nuremberg. The world s top beer-producing country remains China, with an output of more than 500 million hectolitres, followed by the USA with 224 million hectolitres. Brazil (136 million hl) came third, ahead of Germany in fourth place with 94 million hectolitres. Russia saw its output decline by more than nine per cent and now ranks fifth with 89 million hectolitres. In 2013, China was not only the world s biggest beer producer, but also the country with the highest growth in output, with an increase of more than 16 million hectolitres. However, Africa is the continent with the highest growth rate. In 2013 beer output there rose year on year by approximately six per cent. The five largest brewing groups currently account for more than half (51 per cent) of the world beer market. The 40 largest brewing groups together make up 81 per cent of the world beer market. There are now six German groups among the top 40 brewing groups worldwide: the Radeberger group in 22nd place, Oettinger in 26th place, the Bitburger brewing group in 31st place, Krombacher in 33rd place, Brau Holding International in 36th place and for the first time among the world s top 40 brewers Warsteiner in 39th place. The world market share of these six groups combined is only 2.3 per cent. Enquiries to: Erich Dederichs Press office, Joh. Freiligrathstrasse 7/9 90482 Nuremberg Email: info@johbarth.de www.johbarth.com Press release World hop market - Structural supply surplus appears to be over - - Increasing changes in the world hop market - Nuremberg, 10 July 2014. The structural supply surplus of hops and alpha acid in the world hop market appears to be a thing of the past. This was stated by Stephan Barth, Managing Partner at Joh. Barth & Sohn, at the presentation of the new Barth Report, Hops 2013/2014. Barth pointed out that hop acreage worldwide had declined for the fifth year in succession. Only in 1955 was acreage lower, but at that time the volume of beer brewed was only one fifth of what it is today. He added that the volume of hops harvested in 2013 also declined year on year by as much as 20% in Germany alone. One of the consequences of this development, said Barth, is a noticeable improvement in price levels for all varieties across the board, especially for aroma hops. He added that certain varieties in the 2013 crop fine aroma hops, for instance were completely sold out and that forward contract rates showed that the hop market was narrowing further. Between 85 and 100 per cent of the 2014 crop, for example, has already been contracted. The world hop market has not been as animated as in 2014 for a long time, said Barth. He attributed much of this to the global growth of the craft beer movement in particular which in recent years has led to large-scale clearing of high alpha acreage and replanting with aroma varieties, above all in the USA. This trend will continue and thus increasingly change the world hop market. (Barth) Enquiries to: Erich Dederichs Press office, Joh. Freiligrathstr. 7/9 90482 Nürnberg Email: info@johbarth.de www.johbarth.com Press release The grands crus among the hop products Finest Harvest Edition 2014 Ideal for dry hopping Nuremberg, 24 June 2014 The Finest Harvest Edition is to hops what the grands crus are to Bordeaux wines. This is how Thomas Raiser, Head of Sales at Joh. Barth & Sohn, describes the features of the Finest Harvest Edition (FHE) 2014. Selected growers harvest varieties that are popular for dry hopping in selected hop gardens. We then process these hops within two weeks to preserve their fresh aroma. That is the principle of the Finest Harvest Edition. (Raiser) Crop year 2014 is the second year in which Barth is processing a Finest Harvest Edition of selected varieties. The varieties included this year are Mittelfrueh, Perle, Tradition, Select, Saaz, Herbruck and Saphir. The advantages for the brewers are obvious: the oil content is higher, the hops are bagged virtually harvest-fresh and so the aroma has a particularly fresh character. The FHE varieties are therefore ideally suited for dry hopping. (Raiser) This is also confirmed by the brewers who used the FHE from the 2013 crop. FHE 2014 enables Barth yet again to underline its hop expertise in the interests of brewers who want to brew creative, full-bodied beers. And there s another positive effect connected with the sale of FHE 2014: for every kilogram of FHE 2014 sold, Barth is donating one euro to the Barth Foundation for Dyslexia and Dyscalculia which supports measures to combat weakness in reading, writing and arithmetic. Joh. Barth & Sohn is Germany s leading provider of hop-related services. Joh. Barth & Sohn is part of the Barth-Haas Group. Freiligrathstrasse 7/9 90482 Nuremberg Email: info@johbarth.de www.johbarth.com Press release The success story of the Barth-Haas Grants More than 40 innovative hop research projects sponsored Nuremberg, July 10 th, 2014. More than 40 research projects on the subject of hops at more than 20 universities and research institutions in nine countries, sponsored with a financial volume of approx. 90,000 euros that is the interim balance of the Barth-Haas Grants programme since 2007. We award these grants to sponsor hop research projects. In this way we want to arouse enthusiasm for hop research, to support research concepts and, last but not least, to establish and consolidate contacts with young research scientists. (Stephan Barth, Managing Partner of Joh. Barth & Sohn). It is particularly gratifying that in many cases the grants have served as start-up financing, because the projects have been continued with more than three million euros of public funding. In hop aroma research in particular, the sponsored projects have led to completely new discoveries. A total of eleven grants have been awarded for research into topics concerning hop aroma in beer. As a result, not only numerous hop aroma compounds, but also the complex interaction of the hop aroma compounds in the beer with other beer aroma compounds has been identified as being sensorially relevant. Other grants have been awarded for research into the potential and modes of action of dry hopping. It was not until 2010 that, thanks to the Barth-Haas Grants, the effects and process steps of dry hopping were investigated. Without the grants, it is possible that the discovery would not have been made that the lipids and waxes in hops are suited as natural anti-foaming agents that not only suppress foaming during fermentation, but also increase brewing capacity. Research has also been conducted into flavour stability and the initial project has spawned several follow-up projects. Limited Partnership with Registered Office in: Nuremberg, Germany, Registered at the Registry Court of Nuremberg (HRA 377) Personally liable partner: Barth Verwaltungs-GmbH Registered Office: Nuremberg, Germany Registered at the Registry Court of Nuremberg (HRB 14453) Managing partners: Stephan J. Back in 2007, the Barth-Haas Grants were an experiment with an uncertain outcome. Would hops provide sufficient grounds for research and would the research uncover sufficient potential applications for creative brewing and for brewers? commented Stephan Barth. Today we can answer both questions with a resounding Yes. And there has been another finding: The more we find out about hops, the more new questions are thrown up. In 2014, the Barth-Haas Grants are being awarded to the following students at universities in Australia, Denmark, Germany and the USA: Daniel Vollmer, Oregon State University (Prof. T. Shellhammer): Consumer test with dry-hopped beers, hopped with oxidised hops Sebastian Hinz, University of Triesdorf (Prof. M. Krottenthaler) The influence of dry hopping on the final degree of fermentation Zachery Clemens, Aarhus University / VLB Berlin (Ruslan Hofmann) Life cycle analysis in hops (pellets) Dr. Martin Zarnkow, University of Technology of Munich-Weihenstephan The influence of seeded hops on the aroma stability of dry-hopped beers Michael Vogel, University of Tasmania (Prof. A. Koutoulis) Small-scale fermentation as a tool for assessing hop characteristics in beer Sean Majer, Vassar College New York (Ch. Smart) Studies on hop oil, alpha acid and beta acid profiles as a function of growing and storage conditions. Joh. Barth & Sohn is Germany s leading provider of hop-related services. Joh.
