The Cattleman s Source C H A R O L A I S J. Neil Orth, Executive Vice President Listening & Learning Watch for more details A couple of decades ago, Dr. Harlan Ritchie, one of the most respected animal scientists in the modern history of the beef industry, challenged purebred breed associations. He suggested unless long-term systemic changes were made, breed associations could and should become irrelevant. And, quite frankly, Dr. Ritchie was spot on. Since then, breed associations have become de facto researchers. By collaborating with academia, major breed associations have worked to develop genetic evaluation tools such as enhanced expected progeny differences (EPDs), indexes and genomic tests. Associations, again through collaboration with academia, have developed methodology to incorporate and accurately weight genomic information into genetic evaluation. The American-International Charolais Association (AICA) and its board of directors continue to challenge itself to lead rather than follow regarding state of the art technology, intellectual assets and animal science improvements. If the purebred sector and breed associations are guilty of anything, arguably, it s a disconnect with the grassroots commercial sector. As an association representing one of the largest breeds in America and truly one of the most commercially relevant breeds, we are extremely sensitive to the need to facilitate ongoing education and connectivity with the commercial cattle sector. AICA Plans to have Listening & Learning Industry Sessions in different locations across the country. The content of each event will focus on those similarities and differences in the beef industry dictated by geography. The overarching goal of each event will be listening to industry thought leaders and learning how to best design Charolais cattle to meet the needs of the commercial sector today and in the future. The first session was held recently at Noble Research Institute. Visit the AICA website, www.charolaisusa.com for videos and resource information from the presentations. Sincerely, V I E W P O I N T J. Neil Orth, Executive Vice President 8

Commercial cow-calf producers favor Charolais for value, versatility, progress and profitability. The Noble Foundation and Integrity Beef Alliance started using Charolais genetics a decade ago because we realized the value of a good crossbred animal. In our country, we have a lot of black hided cows. Using a registered Charolais bull on black hided cows allows us to have that smoky, black-nosed calf with a lot of hybrid vigor. Our producers see hybrid vigor manifested in total weight. Our producers are in the business of selling the most total pounds leaving the ranch gate as possible. So, we recognize the value of using a Charolais bull. Charolais genetics have taken our producers to the next level. Prior to implementing Charolais, most of our producers were marketing a straight Angus calf. Once they made the switch to Charolais, they ve seen their bottom line increase. The only change made in their management scheme is genetics. It s not uncommon to see a 75-100 pound increase at weaning by simply changing genetics and implementing a defined breeding program with a goal in mind. One of the most important take home messages I deliver to my producers is, no matter what you do, you need to be able to weather the storm and be in business next year. The best way to do that is to use a Charolais bull back on your Angus type cow herd to get that smoky colored, black-nosed calf that buyers recognize year in and year out as a calf that will convert in the feedyard and hang a value-added carcass on the rail. Cattle feeders favor Charolais for value, versatility, progress and profitability. Charolais cattle are extremely valuable in what we do every day. They perform, convert, get large and do well. The packers desire those cattle. When we put Charolais cattle on the show list, there s usually a lot of aggression, a lot of desire to own them for a couple of reasons. For one, the cutability is amazing. The cattle will yield very well. There s nothing more desirable in the industry than a black-nosed Charolais. Known genetics can add a lot of value in what we do. We sell a fair number of cattle in different marketing scenarios, not necessarily grids, such as hormone free. Charolais cattle perform extremely well in hormone free environments, such as the European markets. The genetic potential is there so that we don t lose efficiency by not implanting. Charolais cattle work well for programs designed for the EU [European Union]. The Charolais breed is a very intriguing breed. The breeders have done a great job of creating an animal that will get big, weigh heavy and perform. That s good for us! We re in the business of selling beef. Charolais cattle are a very well rounded breed that fits our industry perfectly. Todd Sigmon, Manager Dinklage Feedyards Sidney, Nebraska 24

Consumers favor Charolais for value, versatility, progress and profitability. We operate in primarily a dairy state. Dr. Amiel Cooper, a breast cancer pathologist, started this organic beef operation 20 years ago. He believed that he could produce a wholesome, safe beef product. He started the operation with eight Charolais heifers. He chose Charolais because of the growth potential and muscle. Today, we market 350 calves each year. We market the whole carcass directly to Whole Foods, Atlantic Division. We are in 20 Whole Foods stores and market beef 51 weeks out of the year. The local movement is very big in the Northeast. The Whole Foods consumer is very conscious of where the food comes from, how the animals are raised and even having a face to the name. They want to know the product is safe and managed well. It s a niche market. These consumers are willing to pay for a premium product and we re very happy to put that product in the meat case for them. Genetics are very important to us. We try to buy high quality replacements and herd sires. The cattle have to have the genetic ability to grow, particularly with the organic requirements. Even though we deliver cattle 51 weeks out of the year, we calve in the spring and the fall. We stage the cattle to finish at our target harvest weights throughout the year. We re proud of what we do here. The whole mission of this farm is to produce a wholesome product that is the highest quality we can achieve while being conscious of our environmental footprint. We get feedback from Whole Foods meat team leaders and know our product is Choice. Brian Kemp, Manager Mountain Meadows Farm Sudbury, Vermont 25
