Mountain Cove Ghost Winery This historic property, previously known as Mountain Cove Ranch Winery, was built in 1887 by Abran Alsip, a former Marylander who crossed the plains by oxcart in 1853. Known for making fine wine, Alsip was forced to close his doors at the turn of the century when the phylloxera vine louse decimated the majority of vineyards in the valley. 5 After being closed to the public for many years, Nell and Francis MacVeagh, a renowned Harvard professor, bought the Ghost Winery post World War II, and re-named it La Herradura, which translates to "the horseshoe". They worked diligently to turn the winery shell into a house and built the second largest private lake in Napa County proper. For 25 years, it was the jewel of the Napa Valley, playing host to an array of international jet setters, artists, writers, intellectuals, Hollywood starlets and politicians. It was San Francisco columnist Herb Caen s favorite haunt in the Napa Valley and he wrote about Nell s gala, lakeside parties often. Over time, La Herradura was transformed into an award-winning vineyard and has recently been restored to its former glory.
