Known the world over for its extraordinary wines, Bordeaux s wine trade began during Roman times and expanded rapidly after Eleanor of Aquitaine become Queen of England and expanded the wine trade to England and beyond. Tucked away in the heart of the rolling French countryside and endless vineyards, visit the charming and legendary village of St Émilion, a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for the Merlot grape grown here that produces rich, full bodied red wines. Visit the impressive medieval monuments of St-Émilion, including the Église Monolithe, one of the largest underground churches in Europe. Bordeaux/St-Émilion Thursday, September 29 Following breakfast, explore Bordeaux s fascinating history and rich architectural legacy on a specially arranged city tour. See the impressive Place de la Bourse, where majestic 18th century façades overlook the Garonne River; admire the Gross Cloche, the Great Bell on the belfry of the old 14th century Town Hall; and walk to the 800 year old Cathedral of St. Andre, where Eleanor of Aquitaine married King Louis VII. Stroll through the splendid riverside gardens of the Quai Louis XVIII and past the monuments to the French Revolution in Esplanade des Quinconces to the magnificent, neoclassical Grand Theatre, Bordeaux s most famous landmark. This afternoon, travel through the breathtaking Bordeaux countryside to walk the quaint, narrow streets of the historic village of St-Émilion, surrounded by one of the principal red wine viticultural areas of Bordeaux and a stop along the UNESCO-designated pilgrimage route of Santiago de Compostela. The village and its ancient ramparts were formed around the original foundation of a Benedictine monastery. Today, the center of the old town is the Collegiate Church, a vast Romanesque and Gothic structure with 12th century murals representing the Virgin Mary and the legend of St. Catherine on the right-hand wall of the nave. Enjoy lunch on your own in St-Émilion before visiting the 12th-century market place. To truly appreciate the centuries of history and the legend of St-Émilion, descend underground to walk among the catacombs: the monolithic church which is the biggest of its type in Europe, and the grotte de l Ermitage in which St-Émilion spent the last 17 years of his life. Drive through the first vineyard landscape in the world to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for its continuous harvests since the time of the Romans. In a nearby grand cru classé ( great growth, signifying the vineyard s premier reputation) château, enjoy an introduction to the art of French wine making and a private tasting of this famous red wine. Upon returning to Bordeaux, the evening is at leisure. Bordeaux/Sarlat-la-Canéda Friday, September 30 Breakfast is in the hotel.
