ISLAY The most prominent note common to nearly all Islay distilleries is a very strong punchy note of peat. Probably the most famous characteristic that divides whisky enthusiasts, it s a beast that requires some taming. It s location offers a salty spray of seawater and that ever billowing note of smoke. BOWMORE 12 YEAR OLD [40%] [25ml] 6.50 Coastal smoke and ash soon make way for bergamot, orange zest, lemon slices and some hay before becoming rather floral. BRUICHLADDICH - PORT CHARLOTTE (50%) [25ml] 7.50 Full of depth and complexity, the smokey sweetness of the barley contrasts beautifully with the marine freshness of the spirit and the richness of toffee and vanilla BUNNAHABHAIN - 8 YEAR OLD MACPHAIL'S COLLECTION [43%] [25ml] 5 Sweet bran, light floral note BUNNAHABHAIN - 12 YEAR OLD [46.3%] [25ml] 8 This 12 year old is lightly peated for an Islay single malt and consequently is a light, fresh dram. LAPHROAIG 10 YEAR OLD [40%] [25ml] 5.80 Laphroaig 10yo is a full-bodied, smoky gem, with a residual sweetness and a hint of salt amid the seaweedy, peaty characters before a long warming finish. A classic dram. LAPHROAIG 25 YEARS OLD 2014 CASK STRENGTH EDITION [45.1%] [25ml] 38 Rich exotic lychees and citrus balance the salty seaweed on the nose, this follows on the palate, as the salty extroverted peat is contrasted by the Oloroso Sherry-aged casks. Ripe, rich and fruity with cinnamon spiced apples and a hint of dark chocolate. CAMPBELTOWN A fairly small area located in the northern tip of Scotland, it draws influences of cereal and barley that are then complemented by just a touch of smoke. (Although it is pretty uncommon to see peat being used in a mainland bottling this particular region due to its close proximity to the Islands will occasionally source peat and use it pre-distillation). This offers a very unique flavour profile.. LONGROW 18 YEAR OLD LIMITED RELEASE HEAVILY PEATED [46%] [25ml] 12.50 Apple peels and smoke. YAMAZAKI 18 YEAR OLD [43%] [25ml] 65 A pleasant oiliness with zesty citrus peel and a hint of sherry. GREENORE 8 YEAR OLD 40% (REP. OF IRELAND) Ignore that this is a grain whiskey. Cooley Distillery know what they are doing. This whiskey is no longer available as it has been repackaged under the Kilbeggan brand. I somehow feel that the cask selection is not as strong these days - Perhaps a victim of its own success, this is one of my favourites. Rose Water, Lemon Oil and Sweet Pear Drops, Apple, Banana, Green Tomatoes and Hay finishes with Caramel/ Toffee and Almonds. 25ML 8.50 GRAND OLD PARR DE LUXE 12 YEAR OLD 43% (GL) The Gay-Lussac scale on the label tells me that this bottle has been to Europe and most importantly bottled before 1980. So it's 'old whisky stock' matured in superior casks from yesteryear. It's just not possible to make whisky like this anymore. A classic blend held in high regard. The Controlled Spirit is dominated by Sweet Orange/Marmalade and Sour Almond in the background. Burnt Toffee finish with a Menthol lift. Some linseed and a hint of Salt. 25ML 6.80 JOHNNIE WALKER PREMIER 43% A glimpse into the past and a masterclass in blending. Perhaps one of the most underrated whiskies I know. Made with very old grain and very old malts; matured in top quality casks. Using the rarest of stock with several of the component distilleries no longer in production. Old Dunnage, A Sweet Nose, Dense Incense, Complex Treacle Toffee/Fudge, Savoury, Pencil Shavings, All Integrated. Pleasantly sour finish with only the hint of Tobacco. Soy Sauce. Perhaps salty, or some Old Bottle Effect, with a puff of smoke at the end. One for the grown ups. 25ML 17.50 MORE FROM THE WHISKY ANORAK OVER THE PAGE...
SERENDIPITY 12 YEAR OLD 40% In 2005, a 16,000 bottle mistake in the bottling plant ended up with a cult following. Rumoured to be 23/24 year old Ardbeg accidentally mixed with c.20% of Glen Moray. All the more painful given that Ardbeg had been mothballed between 1981 and 1989. Sweet Bourbon Vanilla to start from the Glen Moray then Liquorice, lightly Smoked Antiseptic/Iodine, Citrus, melons and some Chocolate. Not a peat monster, the smoke just coats perfectly. 25ML 20 LONGMORN 15 YEAR OLD 45% (SPEYSIDE) Those in the know seek out this pre 2007 bottling of Longmorn. Still under the radar but loved by enthusiasts. The '15 was quietly withdrawn from the market. No hype just a very very solid old school whisky that embarrasses many modern expressions. The quality of the Sherry casks used is obvious from first sniff. Raisins, Figs. Tannin from say cherry stones. Berry Fruit is there but in the background. Some Almonds and Liquorice, a little peat and a little peppermint. Ends with a pleasant savoury nip of Iodine and tea. 25ML 10 GLENFARCLAS 15 YEAR OLD 80 PROOF (SPEYSIDE) bottled in the mid 1970's which means it's been over 45 years waiting to be opened. This is the very bottle that my dad never got around to drinking. A whisky from another era. Toast Johnny's memory. The Sulphur from the Sherry Casks subsides very quickly revealing Burnt Sugar, Buttered Toast, Raisins/Dates, A punch of Orange and Mango/Fruit Cake. Mellow but complex Vanilla leading to Asparagus, Herbs, Spring Onion (but without the Onion!) Gentle Ginger/Incense, a little Cheesy but in a good way. 25ML 22.50 ELMER T. LES SINGLE BARREL SOUR MASH STRAIGHT BOURBON 45% (KENTUCKY) A maverick, a legend. Elmer was still responsible for the final selection of his barrels right up to his 93rd birthday. This bottle was purchased in 2013 and so might be one of the last Sour Mash in which he had an input - What a Legacy. First impressions are that you are dealing with a superior distillate. Dominated by Citrus Intense Vanilla and Blueberry. Orange Incense. Sweet and Sour Aromatic Herbs. The alcohol is controlled to the point of its true role - to merely carry the flavour. A dusty Aniseed/Cola finish with Cinnamon Joss Sticks. This forces you to recalibrate what 'drinking' is all about. Always Quality not Quantity. 25ML 10.50
