Note on Finding a Conservator This note should provide some light on the process of finding a conservator. The list of conservators attached below indicates specific areas of expertise, some of which are more specialized in a single field. Below are a few pointers that should serve as a general guide in searching for a conservator. As a rule it might be best to speak to two or three conservators to have an understanding of the issues related to the object needing conservation. By speaking to more than one conservator, one may get a feel for the way in which a conservator works, and then make a decision accordingly. Before any treatment is performed, the conservator should provide a written estimate outlining the course of procedure, the chemicals that will be used, and the cost for the conservation as proposed. Should there be more than one type of treatment for the art object, the conservator should provide in written form the varying procedures, the chemicals used, and the cost for the proposed treatments. For example, if a painting is being conserved, one proposed treatment may include lining the painting, the other may not; those two proposals and their costs would be very different. Note that the first entry on the list is the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC), which can provide general assistance.
