Riverside The following varieties have been registered with the Variety Committee of the California Avocado Society. In most cases the descriptions are based on a single or a few trees and generally on only a few fruit from a single location. It should be recognized that fruit shape, appearance, production and/or quality may vary between districts. The listing of a variety does not constitute a recommendation for that variety.

FERDYN (CAS Regis. 72-001) Originated as a 'Topa Topa' or unknown Mexican race hybrid seedling growing as a rootstock shoot from a frozen 'Hass' tree, in 1969, on property of Joseph Ferdyn, Fallbrook, California. Upright, spreading; cold tolerance good; production not established. Size: medium; shape: oval; appearance: good; skin color: light green; corkiness: none; skin texture: smooth; skin thickness: thin; peeling ease: fair; relative seed size: medium; seed tight in cavity; seed coat adheres to seed; flesh color: cream; flesh attractiveness: excellent; fiber: normal, light; ripening: even; flavor: good; darkening of cut surface: none; harvest season: mid-october to February. FERNE (CAS Regis. 72-004) Originated by Kenneth Wilkes about 1962 in Escondido, California as a seedling of Diana. Medium tall, moderately spreading; cold hardiness fair; production heavy and consistent. Size: medium (7 to 10 ounces); shape: pear with stem attached at side of neck; appearance: excellent; skin color: dark green; corkiness: none; skin texture: leathery; skin thickness: medium; peeling ease: good; relative seed size: medium (1.5 to 2.1 ounces); seed tight in cavity; seed coat adheres to seed; flesh color: cream; flesh attractiveness: good; fiber: few, dark, not objectionable; ripening: even; flavor: rich, sweet; darkening of cut surface: none; estimated harvest season: November to June. ANNIE (CAS Regis. 73-001) Originated as seedling of unknown parentage about 1964 on property of Mrs. Ann Davis, Coronado, California. Upright; moderately sensitive to cold; production consistent. Size: large (14 to 20 ounces); shape: pear-oblong; appearance: good; skin color: light green; corkiness: little; skin texture: smooth; skin thickness: thin-medium; peeling ease: good; relative seed size: medium (3 oz. in 20 oz. fruit); seed not tight in cavity; seed coat adheres to seed; seed germinated in some fruit; flesh color: cream; flesh attractiveness: good to excellent; fiber: normal, light color; ripening: even; flavor: rich; no darkening of cut surface; harvest season: January to April. Has promise of a good home orchard tree in coastal locations. ANNIE

PINKERTON (CAS Regis. 73-002) (Patented variety) Originated about 1961 as a seedling among Hass, Rincón, Edranol and Corona trees on property of John Pinkerton, Foothill Road, Ventura, California. Moderately spreading; probably similar to Hass in cold hardiness; production consistently heavy. Flower type: A. Size: medium large (8 to 15 oz.); shape: pear; appearance: excellent; skin color: dark green; corkiness: none; skin texture: leathery; skin thickness: medium; peeling ease: excellent; relative seed size: small (1 oz. in 10 oz. fruit); seed tight in cavity; seed coat adheres to seed; flesh color: cream; flesh attractiveness: excellent; fiber: normal; ripening: even; flavor: rich, nutty; darkening of cut surface: slight-harvest season: January to June. PINKERTON

REED (CAS Regis. 73-004) (Patented variety) Originated as seedling, probably an 'Anaheim' x 'Nabal' hybrid on property of James S. Reed, Carlsbad, California, about 1948. Slender upright, vigorous; frost sensitive; production precocious, heavy and consistent. Flower type: A. Size: medium to large (8 to 18 ounces) ; shape: round; appearance-good; skin color: medium green; corkiness: none; skin texture: slightly pebbled; skin thickness: medium thick; peeling ease: good; relative seed size: medium; seed tight in cavity; seed coat adheres to seed; flesh color-ream; flesh attractiveness: good; fiber: normal; ripening: even; flavor-rich, nutty; darkening of cut surface: none; harvest season- July through September. JIM (CAS Regis. 73-005) Originated as a seedling of 'Bacon' in 1961 on the property of James E. Bacon, Buena Park, California. (Note: A seedling variety named Jim' was registered with the Society in 1943 (1950 Yearbook pg. 191). It was rated as an inferior fruit with uneven ripening and a very large seed. To our knowledge it has never been propagated.) Medium size, medium-upright; tolerant to cold; precocious and regular production. Size: medium (8 to 10 ounces); shape: necked pear; appearance: good; skin color: medium green, tends to bronze in late season; corki-ness: little; skin texture: smooth; skin thickness: thin; peeling ease: good; relative seed size: medium large to large; seed tight in cavity; seed coat adheres to seed; flesh color: yellowish; flesh attractiveness: good to excellent; fiber: normal; ripening: even; flavor: good; harvest season: mid- October to January. TEAGUE (CAS Regis. 73-006) Originated as a seedling from a 'Duke' x 'Fuerte' hybrid made by J. W. Lesley at U.C. Riverside in 1952. Originally called CRC-14-11. Large, spreading; very cold hardy; production varies widely by tree, from poor to consistently very heavy. Size: medium (6 to 12 ounces); shape: thick pear; appearance: good; skin color: light green; corkiness: little; skin texture: smooth: skin thickness: thin; peeling ease: fair; relative seed size: medium minus (1 ounce); seed tight in cavity; seed coat adheres to seed; flesh color: cream; flesh attractiveness: good; fiber: normal, light; ripening: even; flavor: mild, spicy; slight darkening of cut surface; harvest season: late September to mid-november. TEAGUE

CRAWFORD (CAS Regis. 73-007) Originated as a Nabal seedling in 1967 on Shepard Ranch, Carpintería, California. Progeny tree on property of Robert Blair, Ventura, California. Original tree upright in growth; cold hardiness unknown; apparently strongly alternate bearing. Size: medium (9 to 11 ounces); shape: round; appearance: good; skin color: dark green; corkiness: little; skin texture: smooth leathery; skin thickness: medium; peeling ease: excellent; relative seed size: very large (2 to 3 ounces); seed tight in cavity; seed coat adheres to seed; flesh color: yellowish; flesh attractiveness: good; fiber: normal; ripening: even; flavor: nutty; no darkening of cut surface; harvest season (Ventura): September to December (18 months plus following bloom). CRAWFORD REMPELADO (CAS Regis. 74-002) Originated as a seedling rootstock shoot about 1959 on property of Herman Rempel, Alta Loma, California. Large, moderate spreading; very hardy to cold; production heavy and consistent. Size: medium; shape: oblong pear; appearance: good; skin color: purplish black; corkiness: none; skin texture: smooth; skin thickness: thin; peeling ease: poor; relative seed size: large (28% of fruit); seed tight in cavity; seed coat adheres to seed; flesh color: yellowish; flesh attractiveness: good; fiber: shows, light; ripening: even; flavor:

nutty; harvest season: November to March. HASTON (CAS Regis. 74-003) Originated as a 'Hass' x 'Clifton' hybrid from cross made by J. W. Lesley at U.C. Riverside in 1952. Originally known as CRC-17-51. Now growing at South Coast Field Station, Santa Ana. Medium spreading; hardy to cold; severe alternate producer. Size: small to medium depending on crop load often smaller than preferred (4 to 10 ounces); shape: pear; appearance: fair; skin color: light green; corkiness: little; skin texture: leathery; skin thickness: thin; peeling ease: fair-good; relative seed size: small (1/2 to 1 ounce); seed tight in cavity; seed coat adheres to seed; flesh color: greenish yellow; flesh attractiveness: good; fiber: normal, light; ripening: even; flavor: very rich, superior; harvest season: December-February. HASTON

LA SIERRA (CAS Regis. 74-004) Origin of tree unknown, located in La Sierra district of Riverside, California on property of M. V. Jacobson. Large, moderately spreading; cold hardy; consistently good production. Size: medium (8 to 12 ounces); shape: ovate pear; appearance: good; skin color: dark green; corkiness: some; skin texture: smooth leathery; skin thickness: medium; peeling ease: good; relative seed size: small (1 to 1 1/2 ounces); seed loose in cavity; seed coat adheres to seed; seed germinates toward end of season; flesh color: yellowish; flesh attractiveness: excellent; fiber: normal, light; ripening: even; flavor: rich, nutty; slight darkening of cut surface; harvest season: mid-december to June. LA SIERRA UCR 18-3 (CAS Regis. 74-005) Originated as a 'Emerald' x 'Fuerte' hybrid at U.C. Riverside. Now growing at South Coast Field Station, Santa Ana. Medium tall, moderately spreading; hardiness to cold not known; consistent producer. Size: medium (6-10 ounces); shape: pear; appearance: fair; skin color: dark green; corkiness: some; skin texture: smooth-leathery; skin thickness: thin; peeling ease: good; relative seed size: large (2 ounces); seed tight in cavity; seed coat adheres to seed; flesh color: cream; flesh attractiveness: good; fiber: normal, light; ripening: sometimes uneven; flavor: rich; darkening of cut surface: slight; harvest season: late October

through February. Not considered to be of commercial quality.

SANTANA (CAS Regis. 74-006) (Patented variety) Originated as a seedling of 'Zutano' on the property of Stephen Nemcik, Buena Park, California about 1960. Upright and vigorous; cold hardy; precocious, heavy to moderately heavy crops. Size: medium (8 to 12 ounces); shape: pear; appearance: excellent; skin color: medium green; corkiness: little.; skin texture: smooth-leathery; skin thickness: medium; peeling ease: good; relative seed size: small to medium; seed tight in cavity; seed coat adheres to seed; flesh color: yellowish; flesh attractiveness: good; fiber: norma!, light; ripening: even; flavor: rich; darkening of cut surface: none; harvest season: late September to mid-february.
