Highball To Indy Kitbuilt Class 1 BONUS: PEOPLE S CHOICE, ARTS & CRAFTS and MODEL SHOWCASE
Construction Detail Conformity Finish & Lettering Scratchbuilding Total 40 20 25 25 10 120 Starting in 2004 and continuing every year I had put together a collection of online-only PDF format publications that I had called NMRA Model Contest PhotoBooks. From 2005 on these books were broken up into multiple parts, each containing both the point scores of every model entered in the contest plus photos of every (or almost every) model entered. Over the years these books grew in size to also cover the other parts of the overall contest. These parts included the photo contest, pass contest, arts & crafts, members choice (popular vote) and the model showcase (display-only) plus occasionally also the module contest. The last PhotoBooks completed were a series of four which covered the entire 2010 Milwaukee Convention Contest and which contained nearly 500 photos all told! Now after a five year break, and my retirement from both my paying job and as the Editor of The SouthErneR, I finally have both the time and desire to revive the series. The first PhotoBooks out in 2016 will cover this year s contest at the NMRA s Indianapolis National Convention Highball To Indy! The layout of the table shown above will be used to show each model s point score in each of the five judging categories and the model s overall total score. The points shown in the example are the maximum for each category and total score. Note that the Kitbuilt score for scratchbuilding differs from the Scratchbuilt contest as does the total score. Each model entered will also have at least one photo, and often many more, to best showcase each entry. Where possible I have also included some or all of the paperwork used to enter a particular model so as to give the viewer a feel for how much and what types of documentation should accompany an entry. Every contest is different and we have no control over what kind of entries will show up or in what scales they will be. In past year s contests I have heard people ask why this or that particular scale didn t win a contest or that the contest was rigged for a particular scale like HO. In putting together the 2004-2010 series of books one could readily see which scales were actually entered and which scales were notably absent. If, for example, no S scale models were entered, then it should be obvious why there would be no S scale winners! After hearing claims for years that N scale models could never win the Gold Award Best of Show the years 2004 and 2005 are illuminating. In 2004 a scratch built O scale model of a Berkshire steam locomotive took that title with 124 points out of 125. The following year an exquisite N scale model of an Ogle Coaling Tower took the 2005 Gold Award also with 124 out of 125 points! In 2006 it was an On30 Shay. You will note that none of these three Gold Award winners were HO scale! Over the past twelve years both the publishing world and the internet have changed, not always for the better. Paper magazines are still around and, despite claims by others, always will be. People like to hold a paper magazine in their hands, however the only way these PhotoBooks will ever appear in print will be if you print them out yourself. All of the photos used in this year s 2016 series were taken by me and no one else. This year I shot something like 17 Gigabytes worth of photos averaging about 7 Megabytes each. I also have photos in storage that cover all of the contests between 2011 & 2015 so I have the material to fill in the five year gap between the last year completed (2010) and this year (2016). At some point after I complete this year s books I intend to work on filling that gap. Entering a contest should not be intimidating. However if you are not a competitor, and are only looking to have your model evaluated for the Achievement Program, that too can be accommodated during the convention contest. Just check off the box on the entry form for: AP Only You also have available the member s choice popular vote contests if you have no wish to have it judged for AP either. If you only want to show off your models then the Model Showcase category will be right up your alley. Model Showcase only requires ONE entry form regardless how many total models you bring and as long as you have a list of what you brung! I hope to see you at one or more of the coming years contests. Note that while this is obviously a diorama, in this particular case only the gray colored Wrisley Papers building is to be judged. Why would you do this? Because a diorama cannot earn a Merit Award. However a structure on a diorama can be judged separately as a Structure which can earn a Merit Award. Highball To Indy Kitbuilt Class 7
