Wipe with tack cloth. Seal with JW First Step Sealer. Let dry completely, then sand again using the sanding sponge. Wipe again with tack cloth. Paint entire piece with Butter. When dry, sand again using the super film. Touch up any parts of the Butter base coat as needed. You are now ready to start applying the pattern. Trace your pattern onto your tracing paper, center tracing paper onto recipe holder, and trace onto surface using your Gray Graphite Paper. Erase off pattern lines until you can barely see them. You do not want to trap bold tracing lines under your paint. There are three patterns for your use I will break them down now and call them, Pie Recipe Holder, Cookie Recipe Holder and Painting Recipe Holder. Of course the Painting bird is for you to use to hold the picture of your piece that comes with many painting packets. No. 331406 Page 1
Painting Instructions: Each holder has a table, washed in with Raw Sienna. Basecoat as follows: Pie Recipe Holder Bag - French Grey Blue (stripe is Light Buttermilk) Pie Crust remains Butter Pie Plate - Deep Midnight Blue Cinnamon Sticks Burnt Sienna Spoon Slate Grey Cookie Recipe Holder Bowl Deep Midnight Blue Rolling Pin Light Buttermilk Rolling Pin Handle and Recipe Box Primary Red Butter Butter Cookies Base in Butter, then go over with a strong wash of Honey Brown Recipes in box Warm White Painting Recipe Holder Bird French Grey Blue Easel and Palette Mississippi Mud Paper on Easel Warm White Cup Brandy Wine Pie Recipe Holder On pie plate, using old scruffy brush, stipple on French Grey Blue onto already darker blue pie plate. If this is not giving you enough contrast, you can add some (not a lot) of Warm White to your brush. When dry shade under crust and on left side with Soft Black. On right side dry brush a bit of French Grey Blue lightened with a touch of Warm White and line with Soft Black. Fill in cut outs on crust with Dark Chocolate shade these with Soft Black. Shade bottom of crust next to bottom flute with Honey Brown. Shade on flute on back of pie with Honey Brown. On flute, where it dips UP do a small flip float of Honey Brown. (This will flip down on the backside). Deepen the Honey Brown floats if necessary with soft floats of Dark Chocolate. To do a soft float, side load your brush as normal, but walk most of the color off onto your palette. I also dampen the area I am going to place the soft float and then apply to piece. Do not over wet your painting piece, when I say dampen, I dip a flat brush into water, tamp it onto a dry lint free paper towel and then apply to surface. Highlight top of pie crust, avoiding cut out pieces, and tops of flutes with Light Buttermilk. Line with Soft Black. On the bag, heavily shade area where the X s will appear with Deep Midnight Blue, under stripe and above flute. This will become mostly dark blue. Shade top of fold over above stripe on the left and right with Deep Midnight Blue. On the side of bag where fold is, shade right of fold with Deep Midnight Blue. Shade the stripe on left and right sides with Dark Chocolate, keeping it soft. Reshape on the darker blue area with Soft Black on right and left sides. Highlight the turn over on top of bag with French Grey Blue lightened with a touch of Warm White. Line with Soft Black and place X s with a liner and Warm White. The spoon is based in with Slate Grey. Shade with Soft Black and highlight with touches of Light Buttermilk. Line with Soft Black. Dab on with liner brush spice inside of spoon using Burnt Sienna, Soft Black and add touches of Burnt Sienna lightened with Butter. Cinnamon sticks are based Burnt Sienna. Line No. 331406 Page 2
the cinnamon sticks with Soft Black, and with #4 round dry brush, some Burnt Sienna lightened with Butter. Base top piece of the spice jar with Warm White, the area where it screws on with Soft Black, and label with Warm White. Then line in jar with Soft Black. Pounce in spice same as spoon. You may use a liner or a scruffy brush for this. Shade Warm White areas of spice jar with very soft floats of Soft Black. HONESTLY, it is a great shade color if you are not afraid of it. It is a very dark color, but if you soften it on your palette, until you have little color on your float it makes a wonderful shade color. Use Slate Grey to add lines on your Soft Black screw top, and lighten your lines with Warm White. Add holes and the line the word SPICE with Soft Black. With Warm White, drybrush down spice in jar. With Dark Chocolate add shading at edge of table and under items on table. Shade Dark Chocolate around pie, bag and jar on background. Wash Raw Sienna around top edges and around edges of sides. I thought it might be really cute to add red checks to the sides of the recipe holders or to the top edge. Cookie Recipe Holder. Pounce French Grey Blue onto bowl with an old scruffy brush; lighten with a touch of Warm White if needed to get the color you want. Shade bowl with Soft Black, add a stripe on bowl with Primary Red. Shade edges with Soft Black and highlight center of red stripe with Hot Shots Fiery Red. Highlight the bowl with French Grey Blue; drybrush it at top of bowl and back of top of bowl. Shade the rolling pin with Honey Brown, and then deepen with soft Dark Chocolate if needed. Shade handle with Soft Black and drybrush a bit of Light Buttermilk at top of handle. Highlight rolling pin with a bit of Warm White on right edge. Add a few lines of splits in wood and handle with liner and Soft Black. The cookies are shaded with Dark Chocolate. Add chocolate kiss to left cookie with Dark Chocolate. Shade the kiss with Soft Black. Highlight chocolate chip cookie at top with Butter. Add chips with Soft Black. Line with Soft Black. The cube of butter is based in Butter. Shade with Honey Brown and line with Dark Chocolate. Highlight with Warm White. The recipe box is shaded with Soft Black, and is highlighted with Hot Shots Fiery Red. Line in Recipes with Warm White. Cards in box are based Warm White and lined with Soft Black. They are shaded with a bit of washy Soft Black. Line the cards and box with Soft Black. Shade the table and background with soft Dark Chocolate. Wash Raw Sienna on the holder same as pie holder. Painting Recipe Holder Easel is based with Mississippi Mud. Shade with Soft Black. Add a touch of Light Buttermilk to Mississippi Mud to highlight. Shade with Honey Brown. Tree is drawn on paper with Mississippi Mud, and shaded with Dark Chocolate and Soft Black. Add leaves on tree with Leaf Green. Add some Warm White to Leaf Green to lighten and pounce on. Shade with Dark Chocolate and line with Soft Black. Add colors on palette with Leaf Green, Brandy Wine, Warm White, and a blue and yellow from your paints (any bright blue and bright yellow). Shade with Deep Midnight Blue, and highlight with Warm White. The eye is Soft Black with a Warm White highlight. Beak and feet are Butter with a touch of Burnt Sienna in them. Shade with Burnt Sienna and line with Soft Black. Shade the cup with Soft Black and highlight with Brandy Wine and Light Buttermilk on the right. Line with Soft Black. The brushes have Soft Black handles with ferrules of Slate Grey. Add Dark Chocolate bristles and shade them Soft Black. No. 331406 Page 3
Line ferrules with Soft Black and add a drybrush highlight with a liner and Warm White. On the brush in mouth of the bird, add a little Leaf Green to tip and add drops of Leaf Green from tip. Add dots of Warm White highlight to the Leaf Green tip and drops. Shade table and around items on table with Dark Chocolate. Shade Butter background with Raw Sienna. Wash Raw Sienna around edges same as other holders. Finishing: After painting, give each piece a good coating of Matte varnish. Let dry completely, buff with Super Film between coats of varnish. I normally do 3-4 coats of Matte varnish to protect all my hard work. Dry completely between coats don t rush this. I hope you enjoy and use these pieces, until next time Happy Painting!
