RECENT ADDITIONS The Society s Exhibition range is, for me, the UK s best for quality and value. The wines are produced for us by of the world s most prestigious wine regions. Usually they are geographical area, sometimes even a single vineyard, where a grape variety or blend is particularly suited to the climate, topography and soil. The Society s access to such vineyards and such eminent producers is the result of long and fruitful relationships fostered by our buyers over years and decades. The results for our members are reassuringly tangible: unparalleled vineyards and regions. We are proud to present the following 27 wines, which members that comes from such esteemed provenance. The Society s Exhibition Pinotage, Stellenbosch 2013 Kanonkop This voluptuous, spicy and full-bodied red was traditionally fermented in open concrete vessels. Deep and vibrant in colour, it shows typical plum Kanonkop, in Stellenbosch, is a leading South African estate renowned for its reds, and in particular the quality of its pinotage. Now to 2019. 14% ref EX-SA10151 10.50 bottle 126 dozen Mountain views from Kanonkop s vineyard The Society s Exhibition Douro 2012 Quinta do Vale Meão Our second vintage of the Exhibition Douro is a blend of traditional Douro grape varieties all foot-trodden in granite lagares. The 2012 is a less powerful vintage than the maiden 2011, with charming fragrance, freshness and balance. The historic Quinta do Vale Meão estate in the Upper Douro has been given a new lease of life red-wine production in the Douro. OLD FAVOURITES The Society s Exhibition Napa Valley Merlot 2012 Frog s Leap A full-bodied but fresh wine from a superb vintage in Napa. Complex berry and spice perfume, vibrant red fruits on the palate with leather, cigar Exhibition label, this is crafted exclusively for The Society by John Williams at organic pioneers Frog s Leap. Now to 2023. 13.5% ref EX-US5601 14.95 bottle 179 dozen There are some wines that are produced with such dedication and skill that their quality and consistency shine through. These wines often stay with our Exhibition range for many years, and are tried and trusted by our membership. The Society s Exhibition Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2011 Vignobles Mayard A rich, dark and full-bodied southern Rhône red. Balanced, fruity and, after careful ageing in large oak foudres, beautifully rounded. Vignobles Mayard is a family-run estate at the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape itself. Buyer Marcel Orford-Williams tasted from all of their foudres to select a blend that had both immediate appeal but also the propensity to age well. Now to 2020. 14.5% ref EX-RH34211 17.50 bottle 210 dozen The Society s Exhibition Fleurie 2013 Fleurie was wonderful in 2013. This blend, by The Society s Marcel Orford-Williams, merges wines from three top Beaujolais estates including an element from the famed slope of the aptly named Grille Midi. The result is a textbook Fleurie: fragrant, sensuous and abundantly fruity with hints of strawberry and lots of charm. Now to 2017. 13% ref EX-BJ6031 8.95 bottle 107 dozen The Society s Exhibition Peumo Merlot 2012 Concha y Toro/Ignacio Recabarren A rich and plummy merlot from Peumo in Chile s relatively warm Cachapoal Province, 140km south of the capital Santiago. The 12 months spent in barrel impart a smooth, velvety texture and hints of spice that complement the dark, ripe fruit perfectly. This is blended exclusively for The Society by expert winemaker Ignacio Recabarren and buyer Toby Morrhall. OLD FAVOURITES The Society s Exhibition Vacqueyras, 2013 Clos des Cazeaux A typically charming Vacqueyras with the focus on delicious ripe berry fruit, round tannins and fragrance that comes from a larger-than-usual percentage of syrah. From the stunning Clos des Cazeaux vineyards in the southern Rhône where brothers Jean- Michel and Frédéric Vache make consistenly ripe but perfectly balanced wines. Many members will be familiar with Jean-Michel from our Rhône tasting events. Now to 2019. 14% ref EX-RH40671 9.50 bottle 114 dozen The Society s Exhibition Mendoza Malbec 2013 Catena Zapata The 2013 vintage of this ever-popular Argentine vineyards matured 18 months in French and American oak barrels. This is ripe yet fresh. Its structure comes from the Agrelo vineyard, with vibrancy and violet perfume contributed from the Uco Valley vineyards. Chief winemaker Alejandro Vigil allows Society buyer Toby Morrhall to select parcels of grapes from different sites each year to blend a malbec of consistent quality. Now to 2020. 14% ref EX-AR3211 9.95 bottle 119 dozen The Society s Exhibition Chianti Classico 2012 Poggiopiano Classico from the small but delicious 2012 vintage. The fruit is ripe and vibrant, with lovely freshness and lift too. Situated in the hamlet of Pisignano overlooking San Casciano in north-west Chianti Classico region, Poggiopiano has been owned by the Bartoli family since 1993. Now to 2020. 14% ref EX-IT18811 10.95 bottle 131 dozen Fiona Beckett, matchingfoodandwine.com Nicolas Perrin s vineyard in the Northern Rhône The Society s Exhibition Saint-Aubin Rouge 2013 Domaine Henri Prudhon Fresh, fragrant and delicately pretty Burgundy with aromas of cherry and raspberry. The of gentle spice. Charming. The Prudhons have deep wine roots in the tiny community of Saint-Aubin: a well-situated village behind Le Montrachet becoming increasingly recognised for the quality of its wines. Now to 2019. 13% ref EX-BU58231 10.95 bottle 131 dozen The Society s Exhibition Crozes- Hermitage 2013 Maison Nicolas Perrin Made from very low yields, the 2013 has a touch more concentration than the 2012. It is deeply a benchmark for northern Rhône syrah. Nicolas Perrin, a collaboration between two great families (Perrin and Jaboulet), classes itself as a boutique négociant. Nicolas Jaboulet buys in casks of wines from well-known, respected northern Rhône growers, which are carefully blended by the team, and matured in oak casks to enhance both their character and their ageing potential, before being bottled by the Perrins. The Society s Exhibition Rioja Reserva 2008 La Rioja Alta before release our Exhibition reserva is elegant, cedary and silky. The 2008 is imbued with vibrancy and charm, typical of this cooler vintage. This comes from the famous La Rioja Alta because they make the very best traditional style of Rioja, released only after long ageing in barrel and bottle. Now to 2018. 13.5% ref EX-SP9951 12.95 bottle 155 dozen The Society s Exhibition Alto Maipo Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 Concha y Toro Fine, cedary Chilean cabernet sauvignon made by Ignacio Recabarren exclusively for us. Concha have superb vineyards and grape contracts in the best Alto Maipo vineyards. This comes principally from two of the best communes, Pirque and Tocornal. Long ageing in barrel has softened the tannins and developed the aromas. Now to 2023. 14.5% ref EX-CE8041 13.50 bottle 162 dozen The Society s Exhibition Marlborough Pinot Noir 2013 Villa Maria A wonderful New Zealand pinot with plenty of plum and redcurrant aromas on the nose, an intense core of cranberries and blackberries, Villa Maria is the most-awarded winery in New Zealand, so it is not surprising that the estate s benchmark style led to it being selected as the producer of our Exhibition Marlborough Pinot Noir. This well-run estate at Cussac in the Haut- Médoc has deservedly been a favourite of Society members for several decades and makes consistently stylish and and great-value claret. Alongside these classic hallmarks, it has great elegance and mineral notes on the palate. Winemaker Jane Hunter OBE not only produces some of New Zealand s most impressive sauvignons, but also draws on some of her best vineyards for this Exhibition bottling.
