CAFFEINEISTA Caffeine actually stimulates the central nervous system and can temporarily ward off drowsiness and restore alertness. That is the physical circumstance of caffeine. But the true benefit of this natural drug is the social circumstance it causes. Gathering with friends over a cup of coffee has certainly become equally as popular as the after work cocktail. In fact, it may actually have surpassed the cocktail as a social lubricant, for it does not carry the after five only stigma that a cocktail naturally does. Most any day, at most any time, you can wander into a café and find an eclectic mix of characters socializing over a varied selection of coffee drinks from the humble, yet traditional, cup of black coffee to the artful and sophisticated latte. The coffee shop is the place for a family meeting, a business connection, a political discourse, a romantic interlude, and so much more. We, again this year, are adding one more thing to the list of what a coffee shop is for. Now it is an agent for social change. Last year the Caffeineista competition raised more than $3,500 for Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center and the good work they do there. This year we hope to shatter that goal and based on the amazing offerings from this year s entrants that should be an easy task. Peruse the offerings for 2012 and head out for a sample of each. Pick your favorite and head back for more to ensure that your chosen blended elixir of wonderment will elevate the barista to the heights of glory as the 2012 Caffeineista!
