ABOUT MADE IN THE SHADE GARDENS Meet the Hosta Guy Made in the Shade Gardens is a home based business founded in 2000 and owned by Rob Mortko (aka "The Hosta Guy") and his wife Sheri. With about 3/4 acre of shaded woodland gardens, we have opened our gardens to the public while retailing over 500 of the most popular varieties of hosta - the largest selection in the Greater Kansas City area. We also proudly offer our own hosta introductions: Carry On, 'Heart and Soul', Mouse Capades, Rising Star, Soul Brother and 'Stitch in Time'. Our gardens have been featured on local TV, on various garden tours including the Johnson County Master Gardener Tour, and in Kansas City Homes and Gardens Magazine. Our Mission Our mission is to provide a wide selection of the latest and the most popular hostas to Kansas City gardeners and to our mail order customers. We believe our selection, quality, prices and service are unmatched by any other operation in the Greater Kansas City area. Our Plants Our hostas are all container grown in a greenhouse setting. Most varieties are grown in one gallon containers while the miniature varieties are grown in one quart containers. Essentially all of our hosta stock is from tissue culture and from reputable tissue culture labs (including our own TC lab). We do not sell first year tissue culture plants. All of our stock is at least in its second year with well established root systems. We guarantee our plants to be true to name and free of any disease or known hosta virus (see Our Guarantee section below). MAIL ORDER DETAILS We are pleased to offer our quality selection of hostas by mail order. Simply use the order form (found online at www.hostaguy.com), contact us by phone (913-206-6939), or e-mail (Rob@HostaGuy.com) relative to your order. We will confirm availability and calculate a total including shipping based on your zip code. We do ask that you pay for your order in advance by one of three options: Option 1 by PayPal. We will e-mail you an electronic invoice via PayPal. Option 2 by major credit card. You can include with your online order, or phone us with your credit card info. Option 3 by personal check mailed to our address at: Made in the Shade Gardens 16370 W. 138th Terr Olathe, KS 66062 Starting in late March, we ship every Monday by U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail which ensures delivery in 2-3 days anywhere in the U.S. We bare root our container grown hostas for shipping. Our goal is to simply break even on shipping costs. A nominal shipping charge of $7.75 will typically cover up to three plants. Please note that we do not currently ship outside of the United States. OUR GUARANTEE Our goal is to provide you with the highest quality hostas - true to name and free of any disease or virus. We sell only well rooted plants that are ready to thrive in your garden. We strive to provide a level of customer confidence and satisfaction that will keep you coming back for more - year after year. True to Name We guarantee all of our plants to be true to cultivar name at the time of sale. Please note that hostas can and do mutate (sport) with some frequency. This can be both a blessing and a curse when growing

hostas. Sometimes you get a beautiful new variegated mutation from a solid colored plant. Other times you may get a reversion from a variegated form to a solid colored form. That s nothing that we (or you) did wrong - it s simply the nature of hostas. If you have any concerns with your plants being true to form, please contact us. Hosta Virus X (HVX) While this virus was originally identified in 1996, it was in 2004 that a relatively severe outbreak occurred in the marketplace. The virus was particularly obvious at most of the big box stores, but many nurseries were also hit hard. Since most of these nurseries handle hundreds of different perennials (in addition to hostas), it was rare that they had any awareness or knowledge of HVX. The virus outbreak appears to have originated in bare root stock which was quickly spread by the mechanical methods used to dig and clean the bare root stock for shipment. HVX symptoms are relatively straightforward to identify. It typically appears as an ink blot pattern that originates from the veins in the leaf. Once infected, there is no cure and the hosta should be destroyed. Contact of sap from a virused hosta with a healthy hosta will likely result in infection. While the tissue culture (TC) process does not eliminate the virus, reputable TC labs first test (i.e. virus index) a plant prior to putting it into tissue culture. We only deal with TC labs that have a stated HVX policy and an active identification program. We have made a conscious decision to preferentially offer plants from tissue culture. About 99% of the stock that we offer is now from TC. Only in a few cases do we divide more mature plants, but even these originated from tissue culture and were virus indexed. Growing our stock from TC requires us to grow them for a longer period (we do not offer first year TC liners for sale) and at a greater cost. But we believe the benefits are worth the time and effort. We guarantee that our hostas are free of any known hosta virus at the time of sale. In the last 15 years we have had only one instance of HVX showing up in our nursery. This was in a single cultivar that had been shipped to us as bare root stock. We quickly identified the virus, quarantined the plants for testing, and then destroyed the entire batch after positive testing. We also no longer do business with the wholesaler that provided these plants since they did not (and still do not) have an acceptable HVX policy. We guarantee our hostas to be free of HVX as well as other known hosta viruses. We will refund or replace any plant you receive from us that is infected up to one year from the time of sale. If you have any concerns, please contact us. You may find it helpful to e-mail us a digital picture of any plant that concerns you. Foliar Nematodes Foliar nematodes (Aphelenchoides frageria and Ditylenchus dispaci) are small, nearly microscopic wormlike creatures (about 2 mm in length) that consume the internal hosta leaf tissue in between the veins. The result is a rather distinctive brown striping pattern. Symptoms typically do not appear in hostas until the heat of the summer and are, therefore, not apparent in the spring when most of us are acquiring new plants for our gardens. Foliar nematodes are known to affect hundreds of different plant perennials. Any hosta within a 6 foot radius of an infected plant is at risk. There is no available chemical treatment that yields anything close to a 100% cure rate. Unlike HVX, foliar nematodes can actually be eliminated during the tissue culture process. Our policy of selling tissue cultured stock is our assurance that we are offering nematode-free plants. We only grow our hostas in a sterile potting mix and in containers that are elevated off the ground. We grow no other perennials in the greenhouse that might be a nematode host. Our hostas are guaranteed free of foliar nematodes at the time of sale. We will refund or replace any plant you receive from us that is infected during the same growing season of plant sale. Like HVX, a clean plant can be affected after planting by any nearby infected plants in the garden. If you have any concerns, please contact us. You may find it helpful to e-mail us a digital picture of any plant that concerns you.
