ADRIANNA VINEYARD MUNDUS BACILLUS TERRAE MALBEC: 1,4 HA part of lot 3. Availability 660 cases x 6 bottles. 100% Malbec 1.450 m.a.s.l.. Aging:24 months in barrel, oak treatment is decided according to the vintage characteristics. French Oak 2.000 lts Foudres. SOIL: calcareous DESCRIPTORS: tight, high acidity, limestone soils, lots of tannins; ageability. Mundus Bacillus Terrae is named in honor of the bacteria that live in the soil in Adrianna Vineyard and help our vines survive the stressful high altitude, low nutrient conditions. There are 10 times less nutrients in Adrianna than in places such as Bordeaux, France. Recent studies have shown that rhyzobacteria which live in symbiosis with the vines' roots help the vines absorb nutrients and minerals. These bacteria may be the key to why vines are able to survive in such extreme conditions as those found in this limestone sector of our arid and cold Adrianna Vineyard. We are studying the bacteria in this parcel of Adrianna and have found the bacteria here to be different from those in other parts of the world. We think the bacteria that live within the plants' roots are playing an important role in the Malbec we make from this small lot. Mundus Bacillus means elegant bacteria in Latin, and we think this name is a good fit for the wine because both the bacteria and the wine are indeed elegant. Casse in legno da 3 bottiglie
ADRIANNA VINEYARD MUNDUS BACILLUS TERRAE MALBEC 2013 There are three separate bottlings from the Adrianna vineyard, one of them the 2013 Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae, from the shallow and limestone soils with a south-facing, cold exposure, that was coupled by a cool year. This has higher acidity and citric, effervescent acidity combined with chalky tannins providing length and freshness. This is terrific. This ambitious new release from Catena (US$300 a bottle, no less) is a radical departure for the winery that shows the left field thinking of winemaker Ale Vigil. Old wood, 50% whole bunches and partial carbonic maceration all contribute to the complexity of this remarkable Malbec, sourced from the same chalky soils as White Bones Chardonnay. Fresh and sappy with aromatic red fruits and notes of clove, pepper spice and bramble and a lingering finish". Bright saturated ruby to the rim. Crushed blackberry and smoky, saline soil tones on the nose. Utterly imploded on the palate, with penetrating acidity and saline minerality contributing to the wine's great inner-mouth tension. Powerfully structured, juicy, tannic wine with a long life ahead of it. In a more Nebbiolo style, notes Vigil, who fermented the wine in old barrels and aged it in 2,000-liter barrels, none new. With a ph of 3.4, this wine should age at a snail's pace and may ultimately be the best of these 2013s. According to Vigil this 1994 planting was the first in Gualtallary.

ADRIANNA VINEYARD FORTUNA TERRAE MALBEC: 5 HA part of lot 6. Availability 1.200 cases x 6 bottles 100% Malbec. 1.450 m.a.s.l. 24 months in barrel, oak treatment is decided according to the vintage characteristics. French Oak 500 lts. Foudres SOIL: alluvial DESCRIPTORS: very aromatic, spicy black fruit, moderate acidity, rounded and smooth. Elegant. Fortuna Terrae means luck of the land in Latin, and indeed, our vines from this parcel of the Adrianna Vineyard are lucky. The deep loamy soils are home to many varieties of native grasses which prevent erosion and attract benefic insects, singing birds and mountain foxes. Because of the freshness imparted by the deep soils and high altitude, the wines of Fortuna Terrae have optimal acidity and delicate flower aromas. It is best to enjoy this wine a few years or decades after harvest. Casse in legno da 3 bottiglie
ADRIANNA VINEYARD FORTUNA TERRAE MALBEC 2013 There are three separate bottlings from the Adrianna vineyard, one of them the 2013 Adrianna Vineyard Fortuna Terrae, sourced from the part of the vineyard with slightly deeper soils (we're talking only about 70 centimeters here!) that has limestone underneath, is flatter and provides very aromatic, slightly lighter wines, more feminine if you like. It's very floral, gentle, with fine tannins with a good structure based on a combination with superb acidity. This is also lighter colored, the more Pinot of the three. Began with aromas of stony minerality, soil and licorice but strong black fruit and floral notes emerged with aeration. Wonderfully suave and fine-grained, with urgent, sharply delineated fruit intensified by strong, harmonious acidity. Finishes with noble tannins, incredible length and brilliant fruit freshness. The wine's outstanding length comes from racy acidity, not thick tannins, in a distinctly Pinot-like way. Another new release from the Catena stable, also from the Adrianna Vineyard, but made in a very different way from the River stones bottling, using older oak to allow the fruit to express itself. Spicy, bright and finely balanced, this has impressive perfume, sculpted tannins and a limestone frisson.
