Section 1 Introduction Directions: What do you think about the barbershop debate? Use the space below to write your answer. What do you think people should eat? 1) Why should people eat Flaming Hot Cheetos or Fruit? (2) How do people get their energy from Cheetos or Fruit? Science in the City +4
WHAT WE EAT GIVES US ENERGY that examines how the language of science instruction can be altered to enhance students cognition and When we eat food like hamburgers and retention. Students participating in his cohort participated in data french fries we get energy. The problem is that we are eating the stored energy of the animals we are eating. That energy comes with fat and is less efficient. FRUITS AND VEGTETABLES When you eat food like vegetables, we are eating the stored food in plants. The plants store the energy from the sun. This is a good energy sources that is efficient. IT ALL COMES FROM THE SUN No matter what food we eat, all of the original energy comes from the sun light. The closer the food sources to making energy from the sun, the more efficient it is. Science For The Community Science in the City +5
Food Energy Video Directions: After you watch the video answer the following questions. (1) What is a consumer? (2) Where does a consumer get its energy? (3) What is a Producer? (4) What is Decomposer? Science in the City +6
Section 2 Explanation Directions: Take a look at the picture to the left. The food look good? Using what you know now, answer 2 questions. (1) The we eat food like starches and complex foods; what causes us to gain weight. Science in the City +7
Section 2 Explanation Directions: After speaking with your tablemates, think about the pathway of energy from steps 1 to 4. Use the space below to tell the story of food energy from sun to Hawk. In your explanation use words like Producers, Consumers, and Decomposers. Science in the City +8

Teacher Lecture Notes LECTURE NOTES Use the Space Below to Directions: Use the space below to take notes from your teacher s lecture. Be sure to answer teach of the questions below? (1) What is a Producer? 2) What is a Consumer? 3) What is a decomposer? 4) How is energy lost at each level of this energy flow chart? Science in the City +10
Section 2 Explanation Directions: After watching the video explanation of the laboratory, we will complete the laboratory to test which food requires to most energy. STEP #1: Find your materials You will need to get your materials for your science laboratory: 1 Large Can 1 Small Can 1 Ligher 1 Can opener 1 Cork STEP #2: Prepare your can You will need to prepare your can Use a hammer and a nail to poke a hole into the can Poke cans all around the can so the fire can continue to burn Science in the City +11
STEP #3: Make your second can You will need clean the second can. Turn it upside down. STEP #4: Prepare your second can Use the hammer to create small holes towards to top of the small can. Make sure your can has hole on the same spot on both sides of the can so it can hang. Science in the City +12
STEP #5: Prepare your skewer Find your materials so you can build your calorimeter. Use the skewer. Push your skewer through both sides of the smaller can. Science in the City +13

STEP #6: Prepare your skewer Use the skewer. Push your skewer through both sides of the smaller can. STEP #7: Prepare your skewer Use the skewer. Push your skewer through both sides of the smaller can. STEP #8: Prepare your skewer Use the skewer. Push your skewer through both sides of the smaller can. Science in the City +15
STEP #9: Prepare your skewer Use the skewer. Push your skewer through both sides of the smaller can. STEP #10: Prepare your skewer Use the skewer. Push your skewer through both sides of the smaller can. Science in the City +16
Experiment time Laboratory Notes Directions: Use the space below to write your results from your experiment Data Food Starting Temp. Final Temp. The Difference between Start and Final (Start-Final) Difference/ grams of H20 = Calories Ranking Science in the City +17
Explanation time How do we get energy from food? Directions: Imagine you are talking to your grandmother (tu Abuela). All of a sudden she asks you about the type of food you eat. Use the space below to write an explanation of how humans get energy from the food we eat. In your explanation use words like Producers, Consumers, Decomposers, and food energy. A Letter to The Community Food Energy Models Directions: You are going to write a letter to your community. In the letter you will explain how humans get energy from food. Take a look at the image below. This is a food chain. Use this image to help your letter. It shows how we get our energy from the sun. Be sure to explain how each of the animals gets their energy. In your explanation use words like Producers, Consumers, Decomposers, and food energy. Science in the City +19
