TOWN NEWS Here s to our 52 years! After more than two years of renovation, the Tiong Bahru CC hosted our annual GRC National Day dinner on 12 August. The food was excellent, if all the empty plates were anything to go by, and we all had a good time sitting and chatting. Our host MP, Ms Indranee, wanted to focus on jobs in her speech. What was being done to create more jobs for Singaporeans, and what we could do to help ourselves. Following up, Mr Chan Chun Sing spoke more on jobs, on how technology, systems and processes can be designed for a more efficient and safer work environment for our workers. He also went on to talk about our relations with other countries. We know there have been significant shifts in the global geopolitical environment and Singapore will need to navigate it carefully. 2 The Tanjong Pagar Town Council
town news Upgrades at Stirling Cutting the ribbon at Block 166 Stirling Road in April, Dr Chia Shi-Lu marked the completion of work on an outdoor lift, skybridge, covered linkway and barrier-free ramps, with shelter. Then we ate kacang putih while watching old movies from the Be My Kaki bus. It was a celebration of the improvements we have, and a great night downstairs with neighbours. Neighbourhood renewal for Cambridge and Buffalo Roads The latest in a series of NRPs in our town, the exhibition and consensus gathering to start the upgrade was first open 5 May. While the upgrade is free, a vote of at least 70% still must be achieved before it can proceed. Mr Melvin Yong took time to explain this as he went around greeting those of us who had settled down with our carrot cake and mee siam. After taking a few rounds of feedback from us as to what upgrades we would like to see in the NRP, work will soon begin. Better shelter. A community garden. A heritage park. This will be good for all of us. Window September 2017 3
town news Helping hands at Buona Vista Working together, grassroots leaders and volunteers of Buona Vista made sure that those in need were looked out for in the Malay community, just before Hari Raya. They were given a goodie bag, treated to dinner with entertainment and got the chance to speak with Mr Chan Chun Sing, who presented the bags and spent some time at each table getting to know the recipients. Kim Tian West Keeps Clean No one likes to see litter. Our cleaners work tirelessly so we don t have to. In May, our Kim Tian West RC called to give the cleaners a break. We would clean the estate, and all they had to do was eat, and receive their goodie bags. The total amount of waste collected that day was 84kg out of which 47kg was recyclable. People really throw away a lot, thoughtlessly. 4 The Tanjong Pagar Town Council
town news FRESH at Bukit Merah View Project FRESH stands for Fix, Refurbish and Enhancement of Seniors Homes, aimed at helping the elderly and families in need in rental blocks. The project brings together other help schemes in place, like free energy saving bulbs, EASE for a safer flat for the elderly, and bedbug extermination. Volunteers also clean and paint the flat and furniture, like they did at the recent FRESHening of Bukit Merah View in June. Free health checkups for those 40 and above in Queenstown This November, if you or your family members live in Queenstown, you can get a health checkup. The National University Health System will be taking over Alexandra Hospital next year. In collaboration with the Queenstown Active Ageing Committee, they will be running the checks at Queenstown CC on 19 November, from 8.30am to 10.30am. Participants must not have been screened in the past year, have no known chronic disease, and have to had fasted 8 hours before. Looking out for mozzies at Telok Blangah With upgrading works for the Home Improvement Programme taking place in May at Telok Blangah Crescent, some of us were concerned about mosquitoes and possible Zika outbreaks. To help, Mr Sam Tan went around the Telok Blangah Crescent Food Centre and market and the estate to distribute insect repellent and 5-step mozzie wipeout flyers to residents on 21 May. food Heng Leong Carrot Cake at #01-13 at the Pek Kio Market is where you ll want to go for good carrot cake. As the stall s name suggests, they only sell carrot cake, and if you re lucky, you can watch them make the raw carrot paste from scratch. With that amount of dedication, how could it not be good? Our $3 plate of black carrot cake came fried firm, not mushy, and did not have too much sugar in it. Open 6.30am till 2pm, closed on Mondays. Stall #02-40 at the Tanjong Pagar Plaza sells drinks and desserts centred around soy beans, soy bean curd and chin chow. Soy bean milk, grass jelly drink, or a mix of the two you can have as a drink. What s there to eat? More goodness. Ice cold grass jelly with toppings of all sorts. All very reasonable at about $1 per drink and $2 per bowl of dessert. Our chin chow was just perfect. Not too sweet, and actually tasty! Open 5-6am daily, closed evenings. Even more good food to try in our town Dandelion at #02-3605 Bukit Merah Central serves all kinds of neat things. Marmite fried chicken. Salted egg yolk fried chicken. Tom yum seafood pasta. The list just goes on. On a hot day, however, what we tried were their gelatos. Home made fresh with low sugar, and they re a real treat each. $3.80 a scoop. Open 11.30am to 2.30pm on Monday, 11.30am to 9.30pm on Tuesday- Thursday and Sunday, and 11.30am to 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Danger Close is a new, unique stall at #01-05, Block 120 Bukit Merah Lane 1. They only serve beverages, but the choices are quite special. From nitro coffee to sparkling teas, and a whole range of microbrewed beers, you ll find them worth a try. The manager, Mr Calvin Ang, is quite happy to talk shop. And we agreed the brew he had on tap when we visited went perfectly with the stingray from next door. $3.50 for a sparkling tea. Open 11am to 9pm, closed Tuesdays. Cafe Galilee at the Queenstown Library is a delightful place to have a light meal, coffee, and read. The latter goes without saying you have the whole of the library at your disposal. We found service to be quick and friendly. Our order of an iced espresso and tuna mayo sandwich came to $8.80, and we thought it was quite filling. They also sell snacks, and heartier meals like pasta. One could see many a family spending a weekend afternoon here. Open 10am to 9pm, every day. Good Taste Seafood Garden serves Chinese tze char at Block 43 Holland Drive. They re known for their XO bee hoon, which you can get served with crab, fish head or sliced fish. They pour the XO into the bowl in front of you. But what we found also stood out was the patin fish with fried cai poh. Be sure to eat it fast it s served perfectly done, but continues to cook on the platter. Call 6778 2661 to book seats. Open 11am to 2pm, and 5pm to 11.45pm daily. Window September 2017 7
Your Say If you think the Town Council has done a good job somewhere or you have a complaint, please email feedback@tptc.org.sg, or call the Town Council at 1800-272 6415. Ms Agnes Siew wrote to say she was pleasantly surprised at the service she received from property officer Mr Ken Soon. She had called the Town Council to find out the colour code for the paint outside her flat, as it was peeling. Mr Soon sent somebody to deliver a can of paint to me within half an hour. I was wowed. Ms Connie Sim would like to thank Mr Sam Liew and Mr Bilal as they helped her to retrieve a missing pouch. Ms Sim s friend realised that she had misplaced her grey sling pouch at the sky bridge near Blk 1G at the Pinnacle@ Duxton, as she slung it on the fence while she was taking pictures and left without retreiving it. She then went to the guard house at Blk 1G to find out how to retrieve footage of the sky bridge. I received a call from Mr Sam Liew and he assured me that his worker has passed him the pouch. We were so delighted and felt glad that we have such honest workers in our estate. They even brought the pouch to my residence and that was really so kind of them. We really appreciate what they had done and they deserve to be commended. They are the gems in the community. Thanks again! Ms Ann Tan wrote to commend the Town Council s cleaning team, especially cleaner Mr Hassan, for his alertness and integrity. On 3 July, she accidentally left her bag on the bench at the Senior Citizens Corner at Blk 32 Telok Blangah Rise. She called the Town Council to inquire. Within 10 minutes, the Cleaning Supervisor, Mr Poovanan, came to my centre to return the bag to me. The laptop, cash and other items inside the bag were intact. I applaud the cleaning team for their hard work in keeping the estate clean and for their honesty. Thank you Mr Hassan and Mr Poovanan for setting a good example to the community. Ms Rose Heng had thanks for Mr Iskandar Bin Jasni and Ms Jayleen Ng at the Town Council after there was a fire at her house. Mr Iskandar is friendly, patient and ever ready to offer help while liaising with HDB. He is efficient in getting things done. Ms Jayleen has also been of great help. She is also friendly and patient, and her willingness to answer and update us promptly reduced the stress that we were experiencing.
