La Trinacria Sons of Sicily Febbrao, 2018 Fratelli, PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Joe Zambataro As those who attended the January Crab Feed I hope will attest, this was probably one of our best events in years. Of course, the food was amazing, along with the music, dancing and the raffles. We had a great crowd and everyone seemed to have a wonderful night. The only down side was that the late start to the crab season caused the price of crab to be higher than expected. Despite the thin profits, it was a very successful night nonetheless. Megghiu dogghia di vurza ca di cori. Rather than risk forgetting anyone, I want to offer a quick but heartfelt thank you to everyone involved. I recently was asked to a meeting, where I was informed of the Women s Auxiliary Club Board had voted to break away from the Sons of Sicily to form a new independent club. I want to thank Marlo Cortese and the membership of the WAC for their past contributions to the SOS, and offer my sincere best wishes for the new club in all its endeavors. However, I want to make it clear that the WAC will continue to exist for any of the ladies who wish to remain associated with the SOS. I also want to assure those who remain have our continued support and commitment to the WAC s success. An important reminder regarding dues, if you have not yet paid your dues you are late! If you only paid half of your dues, you re also late. Last year we voted to change the dues process to require all dues to be paid once in January. As we have discussed in the past, we have not raised dues in many years, and our dues do not cover all our basic expenses. So it s really is important for everyone pay your dues, and to pay them on time. Finally, I am looking forward to see you all at our February meeting. It is a male guest night, so bring along some family and friends, especially those that may be interested in becoming members. Also, checkout our new website sonsofsicilysj.com. La Trinacria Page 2 Pasta with Broccoli Rape and Sausages Pasta Sasizza e V rocculi i R ape This is a one dish dinner that consists of vegetables, proteins and carbohydrates. To prepare it is easy and the combination of pasta, broccoli rape and Sicilian style sausage make it a tasty and appealing pasta recipe. If you add some flakes of red peppers to this delightful pasta you will enhance its flavor and give zest to it. Serves 4 to 6. INGREDIENTS 1 lb. fusilli, shells or penne pasta 6 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil ½ small onion, finely diced 5 links of Sicilian style sausages (less than 1 lb.) ¼ cup of white wine (optional) 1 lb. broccoli rape, washed a few times 3 garlic cloves, sliced Crushed red pepper to taste Salt and pepper 2 oz. of your preferred grated cheese PREPARATION In a 5 ½ quart sauté pan, place 2 tablespoons of oil, the diced onion, and the sausages with the skin removed. Cook over medium heat for 10 minutes stirring occasionally. Add wine and ½ cup of water, simmer until most of the liquid is evaporated. (If you cannot use wine replace it with water). Remove from heat, transfer to a dish using a slotted spoon and set aside. In a large pot, place 5 quarts of water with 2 tablespoon of salt over a high heat. When water boils, add broccoli rape and cook for 3 minutes. Transfer broccoli into a large dish, cool a few minutes and very carefully chop coarsely. In the same water, cook pasta al dente, following the package s direction. Using a 5 ½ quart sauté pan, place 4 tablespoons of oil, the garlic and sauté over a medium heat, when it is golden add broccoli and continue cooking for 2 minutes. Add sausages and simmer until pasta is ready. Drain pasta and save some of the water. Add pasta to sauté pan with the sausages and broccoli; toss it over a high flame until the pasta and condiments blend well. If it becomes to dry add some of the reserved water. Remove from the heat and add ½ of the cheese. Serve immediately. Garnish each plate with grated cheese and serve crushed red pepper on the side.

La Trinacria Page 4 Fratelli, Joe Russo was hospitalized with pneumonia in January. Gene Sanfilippo s wife Joanne had a stroke recently. She is home and working hard to recover. Unfortunately, Gene was on his way to the 49ers game Christmas Eve and suffered a mild heart attack. He had 2 major blockages and had two stints installed. He is home and says he feels pretty good. Please keep Gene and Joanne in your prayers for a quick recovery. Mario Perlongo passed away August 28, 2017 in Las Vegas Nevada. He was 95 years old Frank Mangione's Mother passed away November 22nd 2017. Please keep the family members of the deceased in your prayers. If you have any news to report, please contact me before the 15th of the month if you want it placed in next month's newsletter at 650-670-0777 or email me at fredguidici64@yahoo.com. Buona salute a tutti e Dio vi benedica Fred WINTER IN SICILY There isn't really a season in which you shouldn't visit Sicily. There are a range of things to do in Sicily all year round with festivals being celebrated, different foods to enjoy and the mild Mediterranean climate providing the ideal backdrop - making Sicily a great place to enjoy all year round. A BOUT SICILY If you are concerned about visiting during the cold months, it s worth noting that while it is obviously cooler with day time temperatures around 50 F and night time temperatures falling to about 32 F, it's still a lot milder than other parts of Italy. Most coastal resorts don t even get that cold and have daily temperatures as high as 60-70 C. While inland it can be a lot cooler or even snowy this is ideal for skiing, where in winter areas such as Piano Battaglia (Madonie mountains) or Mount Etna make great skiing locations for those partial to a day on the slopes. Peak snow fall is in January. In some ways you will also receive a better service as hotels and restaurants will be very pleased to have you and you will get a far better local experience of resort towns such as Taormina, Cefalu or San Vito Lo Capo that are usually overrun during the summer months. La Trinacria Page 5 Our February meeting will be a Guest Nite so bring all your prospective new members tothis meeting so they can see what we do and why belonging to the club is best enjoyed with friends. Since this is very important I thought I d repeat it. As to why we always have you call Mike Maltese.
