WINE Our wine list at The Charter Oak is a selection of bottles from our surrounding community, intended to be enjoyed with the same communal spirit in mind. The list represents the fruits of labor from our friends and neighbors; these wines we are privileged to uncork (or you) should be in celebration of past achievements, present company, and young winemakers of our future. The list is categorized in broad strokes by region; with the intention not of exclusivity but rather painting the broader picture of The Napa Valley along with the varied stories. "Land of Plenty" is what Napa meant to the region's original inhabitants, the Wappo Indians. This valley, snug between the Mayacamas Mountain Range to the west and the Vaca Mountain Range to the east, claims some of the most historically rich agricultural land in the world. Bridging the gap between the past and the present, the wines of Napa Valley carry the deeply-rooted traditions of this land along with evolving innovations of the modern "cult" wine era. Napa Valley is only 30 miles long and 5 miles wide, but the terrain is as rich and diverse as the culture of the people who tend to it. The San Pablo Bay keeps its southern edge cool and windy, blanketing the vineyards with thick fog. The fog still seeps north into the valley, but here temperatures peak as the grapes bathe in ample sunshine. High mountain peaks of both the Mayacamas and the Vaca ranges escape the fog, facing instead the severe high-elevation climate on rugged terrain. It is because of these climactic differences that the Napa Valley holds 16 distinctive AVA designations. With over 43,000 acres under vine, the Napa Valley is certainly still the Land of Plenty. 8 A twenty percent service charge will be applied to all selections in

Despite being the most recent addition to Napa Valley's AVA's in 2011, Coombsville has been planted for over 100 years. OAK KNOLL Named after the state's best farm in 1856, Oak Knoll was once the farming capital of the Napa Valley and home to the Eschol Ranch Vineyard. The AVA was home to more than 140 wineries in the late 19th century, however World War I, Prohibition and the Great Depression forced Oak Knoll into farming products such as walnuts and hay, as opposed to grapes and wine. ATLAS PEAK Northeast of the city of Napa lies Atlas Peak. This appellation has a higher elevation than most in the Valley creating unique microclimates far above the fog line. Comprising 11,400 acres, this is one of Napa's most sparsely planted AVA's; much of Atlas Peak is coverd in brush and dedicated to pursuits other than wine. Atlas Peak was initially known for its Zinfandel. However with producers such as John Kongsgaard's eponymous winery and Heidi Barrett's Au Sommet leading the charge in recent decades, it has become a home for premium bottlings of Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals. PRITCHARD HILL An unofficial AVA of Napa Valley, Pritchard Hill is an iconic home to some of the Valley's greatest wines. Named after the homesteader who first established vineyards in the 1880s, Pritchard Hill owes its place in the winemaking history of Napa Valley to Donn Chappellet. Chappellet believed the best wines were made on mountain sites and his family has spent decades proving this claim. Soils here are rocky and volcanic, which along with a myriad of microclimates, lead to wines of depth and complexity. STAGS LEAP DISTRICT In 1893 Horace Chase, a San Francisco entrepreneur, created the first winery here and named it after herds of deer that dominated the region. After decades of winemaking, the region resorted to orchard farming due to Phylloxera and Prohibiton. During the 1970s, Stag's Leap was again put on the world stage when a bottle of 1973 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet won 1st place in the Judgement of Paris. Yountville over time has become a cultural hub for not only fine wine, but also for high-end restaurants and art galleries. Geographically, Yountville is known for the "Yountville Mounts". CALISTOGA Calistoga is the most northern region in the Napa Valley. The appellation experiences the hottest weather and biggest diurnal shift in the Valley. Temperatures in some months can show changes of 50 degrees in one day; this shift enables the grapes to get ripe, but also allows an adequate cool down period. Despite its rich history in winemaking, Calistoga only received its AVA status in 2010. This achievement was greatly due to Bo Barrett of Chateau Montelena. DIAMOND MOUNTAIN DISTRICT Established as an official AVA in 2001, Diamond Mountain District is located just southwest of the town of Calistoga. In the heart of the Mayacamas Range, this appellation's elevation varies between 400-2,000 meters. The fog rarely affects this region, allowing for extended sun exposure. The first vineyards were planted in the late 19th century by Jacob Schram, the founder of Schramsberg Vineyards.
