Café In de Blaauwe Hand history Café In de Blaauwe Hand history Welcome to the oldest pub in Nijmegen, located in one of its oldest buildings. Originally this place used to be part of our city s cloth hall, which was built in the early 1300s. The bluegrey pillars, which you can see woven into the walls of In de Blaauwe Hand and the buildings next to it, are all from the original hall. The ground floor was part of an open space that served as a marketplace for trading cloth and other wares. Cloth was made in the weaving mill on the first floor, and it was also here where the dyeing took place. Just like now, cloths were dyed in all sorts of colours, but most popular was indigo blue. The dyeing of cloth was handiwork and you d recognize the cloth dyers by their hands, which were often blue. Around 1540, the cloth hall was largely done for and the ground floor of the building was seperated into several living and working quarters. Weaving and dyeing continued on a smaller scale. The space where In de Blaauwe Hand is located now has had a publike function since 1542 and was presumably popular among cloth dyers. It didn t take long before the place was commonly known among the locals as the blue hand. FYI, there have been kegs of beer and wine stored in the basement of the cloth hall since the early 1400s, used exclusively for festive activities. On February 9 1546, Emporer Charles V himself attended a large feast that took place in this very building. During the French occupation in 1797, houses had to have a number or a name attached to them, and from this year onwards the name De Blaauwe Hand became official; set in stone on the front of the building. Around 1870, thorough improvements were done mainly to the front and back of the building; the wooden façade is from this time. During WWII, the cloth hall was left relatively unscathed, unlike most of Nijmegen s old city centre. In 2000, the oldest pub in the city was thoroughly renovated and necessary improvements were made to make sure that Café in de Blaauwe Hand can head into its 6th century of existence with confidence and will hopefully be here for a long time to come.
