Last Updated on 9/27/17 2014 The Tasting Panel Bright black-cherry nose; silky and ripe with juicy cherry fruit and toasty oak; great depth, elegance and finesse; another exceptional wine from this great vineyard. 95 Points: Classic -Anthony Dias Blue, February 2017 Wine Review Online Another gorgeous bottling from Sea Smoke. This vintage of Southing shows bright dark cherry fruit with layered pie spices, signature damp earth minerality and moderate oak toast aromas and flavors, with bold acidic structure and lively texture asking for some further bottle aging. The finish blossoms, intensifying after the liquid is gone. 3 to 5 years in the bottle should show full potential. Very well made. 95 Points -Rich Cook, December 2016 Crisp boysenberry and black raspberry aromas meet with thyme, oregano and a touch of caramelization on the nose of this Sea Smoke bottling. Dark cranberry fruit shows on the palate, lifted by anise, pepper and an array of herbs, all framed by a leathery texture. Drink now until 2028. Cellar Selection, 92 Points: Excellent; highly recommended -Matt Kettmann, April 2017 PinotFile Dark berries and stone fruits with a hint of spice are featured on this very pleasant nose. A luscious, but not overbearing array of dark fruits have an earthy bent and are well supported by vital tannins. Soothing in the mouth, with a deft touch of oak seasoning, integrated acidity, and a lengthy, blackberry-driven finish. Still very young, and will benefit from more time in the cellar. 92 Points: Outstanding -Rusty Gaffney, November 2016 Houston Chronicle A California Central Coast cult favorite. -Dale Robertson, February 2017 1

2013 These days, cult California Cabernets are plentiful; not true of Golden State Pinot Noirs. One of the most sought after of these rare birds is Sea Smoke. The wines were stunningly consistent and of extraordinary quality. 2013 Sea Smoke Southing Pinot Noir - 95 Points Ripe and racy on the nose, this always much-anticipated release shows black raspberry, baked strawberry, wet cement, cinnamon and mace spice and cola on the nose. The palate is surprisingly, refreshingly restrained, with sizzling acidity cutting across the chocolate-dipped black cherries, baking spice, dried oregano and rosemary that show in the midpalate. 94 Points: Superb; A great achievement -Matt Kettmann, September 2016 The Daily Meal Sea Smoke Offers Elegance under Cork This is a terrific example of pinot noir. Southing is delicious today, particularly if paired with a well selected accompaniment such as slow cooked pork in adobo. However it has the stuffing to improve in the bottle over the next 5-6 years and drink well for another 5 or so after that. In either case you ll get a pinot expression that speaks of the grape and the place. -Gabe Sasso, April 2016 2012 Forbes Seven Great California Pinot Noirs to Try This Year 2012 Sea Smoke Southing Pinot Noir This elegantly sexy wine is one of the pricier wines from the Sta. Rita Hills, but high praise from critics such as Jancis Robinson and Robert Parker will do that to a wine. Some argue the plot of land that Sea Smoke grapes are grown on is one of, if not the finest, plots in California. This is one of my favorites because of the deep, flavor complexity it delivers in such a delicate package. I love a wine that can, as Teddy Roosevelt said, speak softly and carry a big stick. Notes of spice, cherry, wet earth and rose petals, lingering finish, great structure, a marvelous wine. -Katie Kelly Bell, April 2015 PinotFile 2014 Pinot Noir All-Americans: My favorite Pinot Noirs for the year The 2012 Southing is the twelfth vintage and is featuring the vineyard in its prime. Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Gorgeous nose featuring spiced berries, violets, sous-bois and a hint of vanilla. The flamboyantly flavored core of black raspberry and plum is accented with spice and an undertone of earthy flora. Amazing fruit flavor, yet angelic, with a very soft and seamless demeanor, with oak adding complimentary seasoning. The fine-grain tannins are beautifully integrated and the typically bright Sta. Rita Hills acidity adds vibrancy. The finish is long and pleasing, filled with spicy plum goodness. This wine demands your attention from the getgo. Still stunning the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, when I drained the bottle. 97 Points: Extraordinary -Rusty Gaffney, December 2014 2

Luscious and smooth with deep, ripe, rich fruit. Finishes with spice, chocolate and ripe cherry. 95 Points Wine Review Online A rich, round, seductive glass of Pinot Noir that's more than just a one night stand you'll want more than one bottle for a long term relationship. Fleshy black cherry, sarsaparilla, signature Sta. Rita Hills damp earth and mild spice float over vibrant acidity that makes for a very long finish with great depth and complexity. For a wine that's this powerful to manage to come off as elegant is an achievement. 94 Points -Rich Cook, December 2014 Named after the famed vineyard s south-facing slopes, this vintage is expertly crafted, with aromas of ripe red cherry, sandalwood, black pepper, graphite, purple flowers and damp pine needles. It s complex, with dark red fruit and tickling cardamom spice set against fine-grained tannins. Quite precise and tight now, the violet and rose petal elements will expand beautifully with time. 93 Points, Cellar Selection: Excellent; highly recommended -Matt Kettmann, April 2015 Newsday 10 great wines to celebrate with 2012 Sea Smoke Southing Pinot Noir Minerally, fruity, expressive, and an ardent advocate for the Sta. Rita Hills. -Peter Gianotti, May 2015 2011 Raspberry leaf, flint, ripe strawberry and hibiscus. Creamy, with a nice acid/tannin/fruit balance. Lip-smacking. 93 Points -Karen Moneymaker, February/March 2017 2010 Full, lush and juicy, with a balanced, long and generous finish. Lively and fresh. 95 Points 11 Outstanding California Pinot Noirs Firmly tannic, with a rich, ripe core of earth-laced wild berry and raspberry flavors, this gains depth and complexity on the long, detailed finish, reverberating with flavors. 92 Points: Outstanding; a wine of superior character and style -James Laube, April 2013 3

PinotFile 2012 California Pinot Noir All-American Honorable Mention All-Americans have a powerful charisma. It is not what is said or written about a special wine, but what is emoted that truly defines a wine s greatness. 2010 Sea Smoke Southing Pinot Noir Well-endowed with seductive aromas of spice plum and dark red rose petals. Clearly a special wine that is very charming now. Discreetly concentrated flavors of plum, boysenberry and black cherry with a whisper of spice and vanilla, finishing with an intensely aromatic black cherry flourish. Beautifully composed with balanced tannins and welcoming acidity. A complete wine. Still impressive the following day from a previously opened and recorked bottle. -Rusty Gaffney, December 2012 Restaurant Wine Star Listings Richly flavored and full bodied, this is a concentrated, complex wine with good balance and a very long, lightly tannic finish. It has impressive depth and fine fruit character (cherry, cassis, rosehips, red currant). Five out of Five Stars: Exceptional quality for its type and style; a superstar within its price category -Ronn Wiegand, June 2013 2009 PinotReport 2009 Sea Smoke Southing Pinot Noir 94 Points: Outstanding; approaching the best -Gregory Walter, January 2014 Graceful and bright, with hints of earth. Savory, racy and silky with oak toast on the finish. 93 Points Wine Lines Online Sea Smoke, the Cult of Cool 2009 Sea Smoke Southing Pinot Noir Translucent dark ruby/purple. Aromas of fresh raspberry, boysenberry and cherry compote burst from the glass, followed by sweet woodspice notes and a ghostly whiff of pepper. The wine has a nice upfront elegance, followed by a structured tannic grip at the end. 93 Points -Glen Frederiksen, August 2012 JamesSuckling.com Pretty aromas of ripe strawberries and citrus character. It shows a beautiful purity of fruit on the palate with very fine tannins and a long silky finish. Pretty acidity too. 92 Points: Outstanding -James Suckling, December 2011 2008 Savory and generous, with intense and concentrated red fruit. Elegant, racy and long. 94 Points 4

This full-bodied red combines richness with depth and subtlety, delivering complex, expansive flavors of spicy earth, cedar, blueberry and dark berry. 92 Points: Outstanding; a wine of superior character and style -James Laube, July 2011 2007 A fabulously rich and approachable Pinot Noir that offers everything now, yet will also age. The considerable tannins will protect it in the cellar for a good 6 8 years, but it s so fresh and vibrant in cherries, red currants and oak-inspired red licorice that it s hard not to drink it now. Hard to exaggerate the deliciousness factor. 95 Points: Superb; a great achievement -Steve Heimoff, March 2010 Exuberant with great structure. Big, juicy and generous. Lush and ripe cherry and raspberry. Youthful! 94 Points Decanter California's Coolest Pinot Noir 2007 Sea Smoke Southing Pinot Noir Ripe cherry, floral, vanilla, truffle and pepper balanced by firm acidity and tannic structure. Closing citrus note. 4 Stars - Highly Recommended -Linda Murphy, March 2010 Food & Wine 2011 Wine Buying Guide This outstanding red's seductive nose of spicy root beer, earth and cherry gives way to a rich palate heaped with dark fruit and firm tannins. Complete with nuances of spices, herbs and damp leaves, it walks the line between boldness and elegance. 3/4 Stars: Excellent; top-notch of its type -Anthony Giglio, 2011 2006 It s compellingly delicious, and isn t that what wine is all about? Flavor wise, it tastes of cherries, orange, red currents, violets, raspberries, cedar and peppery spices. 94 Points: Superb; a great achievement -Steve Heimoff, December 2008 PinotReport Medium ruby color; delicate, spicy black cherry aromas; ripe, rich, deep and complex black cherry and plum flavors, some tannin and yet still silky in the mouth; good structure and balance; long finish. Rich and mouthfilling Pinot with terrific texture delicious to drink all by itself. 94 Points: Outstanding; approaching the best -Gregory S. Walter, January 2009 5

Forbes Five Winning California Pinot Noirs Yes, opulent and rich in true California style thanks to its juicy ripe fruit but ringing with a gentle acidity mellowed by all those years in the bottle yes, it does take time to make great red wine, even in California all picked out with a red-cherry tartness and just the vaguest suggestions of wet autumn leaves. -Nick Passmore, November 2015 2005 The most balanced of Sea Smoke's three new Pinots, Southing was aged in about two-thirds new oak, which gives rich caramel, toasted coconut and exotic spice notes to the ripe fruit flavors. The wine explodes with cherries, raspberries, mulberries and even chocolate mint, finishing long and spicy, and leaving the impression of wholesomeness and completeness. Now showing its peak of youthful vivacity, this should develop for an additional six years. 95 Points: Superb; a great achievement -Steve Heimoff, December 2007 Top Scores 2007 2005 Sea Smoke Southing Pinot Noir 92 Points: Outstanding; a wine of superior character and style -James Laube, July 2007 2004 Tremendous richness, depth and concentration with a gush of blueberry, wild berry and blackberry fruit that offers intensity, lively acidity and enough tannins to merit short-term cellaring. 93 Points: Outstanding; a wine of superior character and style -Bruce Sanderson, October 2006 Top Sta. Wine Advocate The deep ruby-colored 2003 Pinot Noir Southing exhibits a complex bouquet of damp earth, underbrush, and sweet, smoky cherries in addition to a medium to full-bodied, velvety-textured palate, outstanding purity, impressive persistence, and a long, concentrated finish. 92 Points: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character -Robert Parker, August 2005 2002 2004 Top 100 2002 Sea Smoke Southing Pinot Noir Ultraripe, rich and plush, with concentrated, detailed black cherry, wild berry and plumy flavors framed by firm toasty, cedary oak, and finishing with a long, intense, persistent aftertaste offering a wealth of flavors and plenty of rich minerally tannins. 93 Points: Outstanding; a wine of superior character and style -James Laube, December 2004 Wine Advocate The 2002 Pinot Noir Southing reveals a saturated, deep ruby color in addition to abundant aromas of sweet cherries, currants, and hints of plums and flowers.
