BRAT POUR Our monthly focus on a single producer s wine. López de Heredia is a family owned winery based in the Rioja region of northern Spain. Now fourth generation, present owner María José, sister Mercedes and brother Julio César craft wines of incomparable beauty and value for money. López de Heredia has remained one of the true bastions of traditional Spanish wine making in a region swept by decades of homogenous modernised wine making. Although all of López de Heredia s range deserves special attention, the Tondonia Reserva is one of the wine world s great treasures. SHERRY While sherry is often ignored by the larger wine-drinking populace, even an entry-level fino from a great producer shows an astoundingly nuanced and complex character. In today s market where many of the world s finest wines have become prohibitively expensive, sherry still represents one of the wine world s great bargains, as well as being one of the most versatile wines when it comes to food. UNDER THE FLOR Flor is the mysterious layer of yeast that lies on top of some sherry wine while they age in barrel, Fino and Manzanilla spend their entire maturation under flor, whereas Amontillado and Palo Cortado begin their lives under flor being exposed to oxygen once it breaks. These differences make for a diverse and delicious range of sherry styles. The flavours impaired are unlike anything else in the wine world, saline in character with notes of seaspray, almonds and mediterranean herbs.
