THE ESTATE Quinta do Passadouro Quinta do Passadouro is located at the Douro Valley, on the left bank of the Pinhão river and 8 km from the Pinhão village. The owners of this estate are the Bohrmann family, Germany and Belgium origins, in a partnership with Jorge Serôdio Borges, he his part of a family originally from the Douro and they has been involved in port wine business since five generations. Jorge is also the director and the winemaker of the company. The land owned is divided by two different properties, the Quinta do Passadouro with 20 ha of vines plus 5 ha of olive trees, the Quinta do Sibio has 20 hectares of vines. All this 40 hectares of vines are grafted with indigenous varieties from the Douro, like touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta roriz, sousão, tinta barroca. On the last years a large investments were made to modernize the vineyards and to install modern winery equipment to be able to produce high quality table wines, the port wines are still made 100% foot trodden in traditional granit lagares. For the red`s we use a mixture of lagares and stainless still tank to vinify our grapes. Independent of the vinification process our goal is to respect our terroir and present in our bottles the Douro Character. 3
THE REGION Douro Spanning the magnificient Douro River DOC was demarcated in 1756, making it one of the first official wine regions in history. The stunning mountainous landscape is rife with glittering valleys, and dramatic, sleepy teraced vineyards. Strikingly vast, Douro is divided into three distinct sub-zones: the pristine, uncultivated Douro Superior ( Upper Douro), the port capital of Cima Corgo (Upper Corgo), and the Baixo Corgo (Lower Corgo), the wettest and coolest of the sub-zones. Though widely recognized for its port wine production, the Douro is also becoming increasingly well-known for its tabe wine. At this point in time, more than 90 different grapes are premitted, including popular red varietals such as Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, and Tinta Roriz, as well as Rabigato, Gouveio, and Viosinho, all white varietals. Though modern winemaking technology and equipment are used extensively, traditional methods are still in pratice; this duality of technique and style produces unique, characterdriven wines that stand out in a crowd.
THE WINEMAKER Jorge Serôdio Borges THE WINE MAGAZINE, PORTUGAL S TOP WINE PUBLICATION, THE WINEMAKER OF THE YEAR 2008 AND 2011 One of the best ways to assess a Winemaker s achievements is to hear what his peers have to say about him, what those who share his profession really think. And the answers and comments regarding Jorge Serôdio Borges are fraught with the importance and respect his peers afford him, their acknowledgement of him. Jorge Serôdio Borges is a man of the Douro, from a place called Fermentões. He was born at the heart of a family with long-standing wine traditions, divided between the influences from his maternal grandfather, João Serôdio, winemaker for the Real Companhia Velha in Porto, and his paternal side, from his grandfather Borges, one of the greatest private producers of Port wine. Thus it was no wonder that, from an early age, Jorge demonstrated the desire to be a winemaker. Halfway through his university degree, he was already collaborating in the family project, helping with the Quinta do Fojo and Quinta da Manuela wines, until 1999 when he started to work with Dirk Niepoort, constituting one of the most creative, revolutionary and refreshing partnerships the Douro has ever known.
THE WINEMAKER But it was in his personal projects, with his wife Sandra Tavares da Silva, that he reached new and impressive heights, projecting the coveted Pintas into the international limelight, earning him almost instant national and international recognition. Immediately following came the wines Guru and Pintas Character, as well as the journey into Port Wine with Pintas Vintage and Wine & Soul 10 years. In the meantime, Jorge inherited the beautiful Quinta da Manuela with a generous legacy of old vines that this year produced one of the new icons in the Douro, the Quinta da Manuela Old Vines 2009. Starting from a mere six hectares of vineyards, Jorge Serôdio Borges now has 22 hectares of vine and 44 hectares of forest and olive groves, as well as a collection of Old Port wine, which have already begun to bear fruit. Such a great choice of wines, as well as the excellent wines that result from his partnership to the Quinta do Passadouro with the Bohrmann family, are certainly not a fluke. WINE-The Essence of Wine magazine, distinguishes Jorge Serôdio Borges as "Winemaker of the Year 2011", repeating the conferral of when it commended him with the same award for his work carried out in 2008.
