INTRODUCTION The Mondial de la bière of Montreal s Greg Noonan MBeer Contest is a completely original competition that distinguishes itself in two ways: A: There are no predetermined categories this is part of the evaluation process. B: The evaluation is based essentially on the beer s intrinsic qualities. There is a great variety of styles available in the world of beer. It is relatively easy to make the distinction between a German Pilsner and an Irish Stout, but not so easy when presented with a Pale Ale and an India Pale Ale. The line between these two neighboring styles is often obscure. One of the cornerstones of the Greg Noonan MBeer Contest is the elimination of references to a specific style as a judging criteria for the beers in competition. The evaluation of each beer in competition will proceed in two steps: A: Establishment of style, identified by the judge. B: Beer judging according to the identified style. (1) Note: The final jury must decide if certain beers should be eliminated due to a prejudicial gap between the named style of the beer and the style it represents. e.g.: a blond mistaken for a lambic. In this way, each beer will be judged according to its most charming and seductive characteristics. (1) Mondial de la bière of Montreal will award, for the eighth edition of the Greg Noonan MBeer Contest: 1 Platinum medal and certificate for the beer with the contest s overall highest point count and 10 Gold medals and certificates for the 10 beers that obtain the highest point count and according to style they have been identified by the judges. This way of proceeding will undoubtedly stir up definitions, conceptions and pre-established notions of different beer styles, a fact we are fully aware of. The blind judging, carried out as part of this contest, will contribute to the development of more precise definitions of the many existing styles. ELIGIBILITY AND EVALUATION BEERS ELIGIBLE TO THE COMPETITION It is forbidden to submit a competitor s beer to the Greg Noonan MBeer Contest. Participants must be registered in the 2014 Montreal Mondial de la bière festival to compete. Only can, bottle and draught beers, on sale in convenience stores, beer outlets, groceries and/or the SAQ are eligible. A minimum quantity of 30 liters (0.3 hectoliter) must be available during the event for public tasting purposes. JUDGING METHOD A: Each brand in competition will be blind tasted by 3 beer experts. B: Beers in competition will be evaluated according to their intrinsic qualities. All judges will use the same evaluation form provided by the Mondial de la bière of Montreal. (2) Note: The final jury may discuss certain points on whether some beers should be eliminated due to doubts over contamination of the product. C: Evaluations will be conducted on an individual basis and not in groups. There will be no discussion between judges about any beer being tasted. (2) D: Visual appearances are not evaluated. E: Tasting glasses: each judge will use a tasting glass. JUDGING PROCEDURES BEERS Bottled, canned or draught beers: Each exhibitor must submit a minimum of 2.25L and a maximum of 3L of samples of the same batch to the contest. Beers can be delivered between May 26 th and 30 th to the Mondial de la bière s head office 2236 Beaubien East, Montreal, Qc or on June 9 th from 1:00 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Palais des Congrés de Montréal and brought to the Supplies Department. Draught beer: A festival employee will collect a pitcher at the exhibitor s stand or you can deliver the beer in a growler. Draught beer must be available on June 10 th and 11 th, between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. Beer evaluation takes place between 8 am and 5 pm on June 10 th and 11 th ; therefore, a person in charge of service must be present at the stand at that moment to insure the beer s pouring. If no exhibitor is available to pour the draught beer at the time of pick-up, the product will be removed from competition and the registration fees will not be reimbursed. VERY IMPORTANT: Each exhibitor must provide proforma invoice(s). Without the invoice(s), the beer(s) will not be submitted for evaluation. You can either send the invoice via email to Marilou Caty: marilou.caty@gmail.com or hand it in person at the moment of delivery. Téléphone : 1 514 722-9640 Télécopieur : 1 514 722-8467 www.festivalmondialbiere.qc.ca 3

THE JUDGING AREA All judging will be carried out in a predetermined space. All dispositions regarding ideal judging conditions will be respected as much as possible in order to offer a maximum of objectivity. PROCEDURE A: Each beer will be identified with a number. B: A festival s staff member will pour the beer and served it to the judges. The judges will not see the product and will not be able to determine its origin. C: Each judge will receive a series of three different beers to evaluate. The beer styles may be similar or very different. Beers will be served in random order. Judges will evaluate a maximum of 25 different beers per session. D: The judge decides whether or not to swallow the beer under evaluation. E: Each judge will have the following available, to help the tasting process: - Slices of white baguette bread - Black coffee beans for rinsing the sense of smell. - Flavor referential sheet - Water INTERNATIONAL JURY Judging sessions will be held on June 10 th and 11 th, 2014 at the Mondial de la bière site. The jury consists of 9 professionals from the international brewing community as well as one substitute judge in case of last minute cancellations or unexpected occurrences. PRESIDENT OF THE JURY The Mondial de la bière s organization will elect the President of the Jury. He represents and is the spokesperson of the Jury. He s the person in charge of handing out the awards and electing the final jury, if necessary, to discuss certain issues such as: elimination of beers because of infection or other litigation or unexpected decisions to be taken. The final jury will count 3 judges excluding the president. Judges do not have any beers registered in the competition. The Judges list will be announced at a later date.
